Amazon Ads · Referral → closed sale · Conversion tracking
How to track referral to closed sale for Amazon Ads
A referral is the one channel that reliably steals credit in both directions: a stale paid identifier claims a word-of-mouth sale, or a referral parameter overwrites a legitimate paid click. Whichever wins is usually an accident of storage logic nobody chose. On Amazon Ads the specifics that matter are the click identifier (no click identifier for on-Amazon conversions), the import mechanism (the Amazon Ads conversion API, for off-Amazon destinations only), and Deduplication only arises for off-Amazon conversions where both a tag and a server event exist. The chain only works end to end if the identifier is captured on landing and stored on the closed sale, with its true origin recorded — no cookie survives the gap between referral link shared and reward issued.

Where this funnel usually breaks
Stale paid identifiers claiming referral sales
The more successful your referral program becomes, the better your paid campaigns appear to perform. That is a genuinely perverse outcome and an entirely avoidable one.
Referral parameters overwriting live paid clicks
The opposite failure. A referred visitor who then clicks a paid ad and buys is a paid sale, and referral-wins logic hands it to the referrer.
Reward-driven repeat purchases counted as new
The reward exists to produce a second order. Counting it as acquisition double-counts the same customer.
Specific to Amazon Ads × Referral → closed sale
Amazon Ads and referrals: per-order credit does not exist on Amazon
On Amazon, referral-to-sale tracking only works for sales on your own site, where a DSP click identifier and the referral parameter can both be stored and a precedence rule applied. Sales completed inside Amazon's checkout cannot be tied to a referrer or an ad per order; Amazon Attribution tags give aggregated counts only.
A customer referral program and an Amazon listing do not mix well. Amazon does not tell you who bought, so you cannot credit a referrer for an Amazon order or decide precedence between a referral and a Sponsored Products click. If your referral program sends friends to your Amazon listing, the most you can measure is an aggregated count through an Amazon Attribution tag on the referral link, separate from your ad campaigns.
That aggregate is still useful. Give referral traffic its own Attribution tag, distinct from any paid social or email tags, and compare it against Sponsored ad sales in the same period. Amazon's Brand Referral Bonus program, where eligible, rewards sellers for driving outside traffic that is measured through Attribution; check whether your account qualifies before assuming either way, and do not confuse it with a customer referral program.
If you need per-order referral credit and real precedence logic, route referred customers to your own site. There, Amazon DSP clicks behave like any network's: capture the identifier where one arrives, store it beside the referral parameter, and upload only paid-won sales. Mixing Amazon-completed and site-completed sales in one referral report produces a number nobody can reconcile.
Architecture
The exact event sequence
Five stages. The break is at stage three and it is a logic decision, not a technical failure. Two identifiers arrive and something has to choose. The identifier has to survive all of them.
Step 1
Referral link shared
Person to person. No campaign produced this.
Step 2
Referred visitor arrives
With a referral parameter, onto a browser that may already hold a paid identifier from last week.
Step 3
Precedence decided
The moment that determines who gets credit, and the moment almost nobody has consciously configured.
Step 4
Sale closed
Attributed to whichever identifier survived.
Step 5
Reward issued
Which frequently produces a second purchase that must not inherit the first sale's attribution.
Diagnostic sequence
What's specific to Amazon Ads
The funnel logic above is the same wherever you advertise. These are the parts that change because it's Amazon Ads.
- 1
Click identifier: no click identifier for on-Amazon conversions
This is the important thing and most guidance skips it: Amazon Ads spans two very different situations. Sponsored ad formats driving to an Amazon listing produce conversions Amazon measures itself, with no click identifier passed to you and no per-order join available. Amazon DSP driving to your own site is a different case, where a click identifier can reach your landing page and be captured like any other network's.
- 2
Import mechanism: conversion upload, where applicable
Where you are driving to your own site, conversions can be sent back. Where you are driving to an Amazon listing, the transaction happens inside Amazon's checkout and there is nothing to send — Amazon's own attribution reporting is the only view available and it is aggregated.
- 3
Deduplication
For on-Amazon purchases the question does not apply, because you are not measuring the conversion at all — Amazon is. For traffic to your own site the usual shared-identifier pattern applies.
- 4
Window and timing
Amazon's attribution windows differ by ad product and by whether the conversion happens on Amazon or on your site. Establish which product and which destination you are reporting on before comparing any figure.
- 5
The Amazon Ads gotcha
The structural limit is worth stating plainly to anyone selling you on this: for sales that complete inside Amazon, per-order click attribution does not exist and cannot be built. Amazon Attribution gives aggregated, delayed reporting. Anyone offering per-order joins on Amazon-completed sales is describing something that is not available.
Source-of-truth validation
How to prove the chain works
One real journey, followed all the way, then a reconciliation. Neither on its own is enough.
- A live Amazon Ads ad clicked, and the identifier confirmed present on the landing URL.
- The same identifier confirmed on the closed sale, with its true origin recorded after a full real journey through every step.
- Reward issued confirmed arriving at Amazon Ads, verified by Amazon's own attribution reporting for on-Amazon sales, and your normal reconciliation for off-Amazon conversions.
- Your order or crm record, with referral and paid sources held apart reconciled against Amazon Ads per record over a fully closed window.
- The same reconciliation repeated 30 days later.
Straight talk
When this doesn't apply to you
Worth checking before you build anything, because two of these are common and both mean the work isn't worth doing.
- With no referral program there is no conflict, and this is an ordinary purchase funnel.
- If all your Amazon Ads spend drives to Amazon listings, there is no conversion tracking build here — only a reporting exercise inside Amazon's own tools, and it is worth knowing that before commissioning anything.
- If your cycle from click to reward issued regularly exceeds the import window, the final event can't drive bidding whatever you build. Optimize toward sales with both source parameters retained for later analysis instead and use the later data for budget decisions rather than for bidding.
- If almost none of your closed sales by origin carry a click identifier today, that's the whole project. Fix capture first — the import is the easy half and no tooling rescues a record with nothing to reference.
What working looks like
Reward issued attributed to the click
Server-sideWeeks later if necessary, because the identifier lives on the closed sale, with its true origin recorded rather than in a cookie.
Amazon Ads bidding fed the real outcome
8+ EMQVia conversion upload, where applicable, so it optimizes toward sales, credited to their true origin rather than toward referral link clicks.
A reconciliation that closes
DedupedYour order or crm record, with referral and paid sources held apart matched per record against what Amazon Ads reports, over a fully closed window.
The implementation, on Amazon Ads
Capture the Amazon click identifier, where one exists on landing
For off-Amazon destinations, capture and persist the click identifier as with any network. For on-Amazon destinations there is nothing to capture.
Persist it to the closed sale, with its true origin recorded
Store both identifiers with timestamps and apply a written precedence rule, rather than letting last-write-wins decide by accident.
Send reward issued from the record
Your order or CRM system, with an explicit source-precedence rule applied and recorded on the record itself. Dispatched to Amazon Ads through the Amazon Ads conversion API, for off-Amazon destinations only.
Deduplicate and reverse
Deduplication only arises for off-amazon conversions where both a tag and a server event exist. Refunds reverse against whichever source was credited.

The honestanswers.
No buzzwords, no upsell. If we don’t know, we say so.
01Can I give referral credit for purchases made on Amazon?
Not per order. Amazon does not share buyer identity with sellers for this purpose, so referral programs that need per-order credit have to send customers to your own site.
02How do I measure referral traffic to my Amazon listing?
Put a dedicated Amazon Attribution tag on the referral link and read its aggregated results, kept separate from your paid campaign tags.
03Why isn't referred visitor arrives enough to optimize on?
Because referral link clicks measure how much your customers like you, which is worth knowing and is not something a bidding algorithm can act on.
04How does the identifier survive to reward issued?
It doesn't, as a cookie — the gap is too long. It has to be written onto the closed sale, with its true origin recorded at the point of referral link shared, where it lives as a field rather than as browser storage.
05What does Amazon Ads need to accept the conversion?
For off-Amazon conversions: an event, a timestamp, a value and the click identifier. For on-Amazon conversions: nothing, because the measurement is not yours to do.
06How long does this take to build?
Two to four days for the implementation, plus a closed reconciliation window before we'd call it verified. Capture and persistence are the fiddly parts; the import itself is usually an afternoon.
07Can I do this myself?
Yes, and the reference pages on this site cover the mechanics. The part that's genuinely tedious rather than clever is keeping the Amazon click identifier, where one exists alive through multi-step forms and two competing identifiers in one browser, which fails silently at every stage.
