How to track phone call to sale for Amazon Ads
For a lot of businesses the phone is the conversion, and a website tag can see none of it. Getting this right needs two separate things: dynamic number insertion so the call carries a source at all, and a recorded outcome so a wrong number isn't worth the same as a booked job. Almost every implementation we open has the first and not the second. On Amazon Ads the specifics that matter are the click identifier (no click identifier for on-Amazon conversions), the import mechanism (the Amazon Ads conversion API, for off-Amazon destinations only), and Deduplication only arises for off-Amazon conversions where both a tag and a server event exist. The chain only works end to end if the identifier is captured on landing and stored on the call record, joined to your job or CRM system — no cookie survives the gap between ad click and qualified calls sent back.

Where this funnel usually breaks
A hard-coded number insertion can't reach
A number in a header graphic, a footer or a sticky mobile bar can't be swapped, and those calls arrive with no source at all.
Every call counted equally
A thirty-second wrong number and a booked job teach bidding exactly the same thing.
Click-to-call firing no event
On mobile the customer taps the number. If the tel: link fires nothing, the highest-intent path is invisible.
Specific to Amazon Ads × Phone call → sale
Amazon Ads and phone sales: there is usually nothing to attribute
On Amazon Ads, phone call to sale generally does not apply. Sponsored ads send shoppers to Amazon listings, where nobody calls you and no click identifier reaches your systems. If you run Amazon DSP to your own site, give that traffic a dedicated tracking number and report sold calls from your call records rather than through Amazon.
Amazon shoppers buy on Amazon. Sponsored Products, Brands and Display drive people to a listing, and the conversion is an Amazon order, not a call to your office. There is no per-call attribution to build there, and no call tracking vendor can create one. If your business sells through phone conversations, Amazon's on-site ad products are simply not a call channel.
The only realistic call path is Amazon DSP running display or video to your own website, for example a home-services brand or a B2B supplier buying Amazon audience segments. Even then, check what conversion signals your DSP setup accepts from your site before planning anything, because Amazon's off-Amazon measurement is built around its own tag and aggregated reporting rather than per-order joins to your CRM.
The sane minimal setup is a tracking number shown only to visitors arriving from DSP campaigns, identified by your own UTM tags, with sold calls tallied in the call platform. Compare that count with spend. If DSP calls are rare, which is the usual result, that comparison is the whole answer and nothing more needs building.
Architecture
The exact event sequence
Five stages. Stage two is where most of the loss happens, and it's usually a phone number rendered inside an image. The identifier has to survive all of them.
Step 1
Ad click
Identifier captured on landing, at the visit — not at the call, by which point the session context is gone.
Step 2
Number swapped
Dynamic insertion across every template, including header images and the sticky mobile bar.
Step 3
Call connected
The call platform records it against the session, which is how it carries a campaign.
Step 4
Outcome recorded
Qualified, booked, sold. Duration is a proxy; the office's own disposition is the truth.
Step 5
Qualified calls sent back
Only the ones that turned into work, so bidding stops buying wrong numbers.
Diagnostic sequence
What's specific to Amazon Ads
The funnel logic above is the same wherever you advertise. These are the parts that change because it's Amazon Ads.
- 1
Click identifier: no click identifier for on-Amazon conversions
This is the important thing and most guidance skips it: Amazon Ads spans two very different situations. Sponsored ad formats driving to an Amazon listing produce conversions Amazon measures itself, with no click identifier passed to you and no per-order join available. Amazon DSP driving to your own site is a different case, where a click identifier can reach your landing page and be captured like any other network's.
- 2
Import mechanism: conversion upload, where applicable
Where you are driving to your own site, conversions can be sent back. Where you are driving to an Amazon listing, the transaction happens inside Amazon's checkout and there is nothing to send — Amazon's own attribution reporting is the only view available and it is aggregated.
- 3
Deduplication
For on-Amazon purchases the question does not apply, because you are not measuring the conversion at all — Amazon is. For traffic to your own site the usual shared-identifier pattern applies.
- 4
Window and timing
Amazon's attribution windows differ by ad product and by whether the conversion happens on Amazon or on your site. Establish which product and which destination you are reporting on before comparing any figure.
- 5
The Amazon Ads gotcha
The structural limit is worth stating plainly to anyone selling you on this: for sales that complete inside Amazon, per-order click attribution does not exist and cannot be built. Amazon Attribution gives aggregated, delayed reporting. Anyone offering per-order joins on Amazon-completed sales is describing something that is not available.
Source-of-truth validation
How to prove the chain works
One real journey, followed all the way, then a reconciliation. Neither on its own is enough.
- A live Amazon Ads ad clicked, and the identifier confirmed present on the landing URL.
- The same identifier confirmed on the call record, joined to your job or CRM system after a full real journey through every step.
- Qualified calls sent back confirmed arriving at Amazon Ads, verified by Amazon's own attribution reporting for on-Amazon sales, and your normal reconciliation for off-Amazon conversions.
- Call records joined to a recorded sale outcome reconciled against Amazon Ads per record over a fully closed window.
- The same reconciliation repeated 30 days later.
Straight talk
When this doesn't apply to you
Worth checking before you build anything, because two of these are common and both mean the work isn't worth doing.
- If your calls come overwhelmingly from a Google Business Profile listing rather than from paid clicks, those aren't ad conversions and shouldn't be uploaded as any. Track them separately.
- If all your Amazon Ads spend drives to Amazon listings, there is no conversion tracking build here — only a reporting exercise inside Amazon's own tools, and it is worth knowing that before commissioning anything.
- If your cycle from click to qualified calls sent back regularly exceeds the import window, the final event can't drive bidding whatever you build. Optimize toward a qualified call by duration instead and use the later data for budget decisions rather than for bidding.
- If almost none of your call records carry a click identifier today, that's the whole project. Fix capture first — the import is the easy half and no tooling rescues a record with nothing to reference.
What working looks like
Qualified calls sent back attributed to the click
Server-sideWeeks later if necessary, because the identifier lives on the call record, joined to your job or CRM system rather than in a cookie.
Amazon Ads bidding fed the real outcome
8+ EMQVia conversion upload, where applicable, so it optimizes toward calls that turned into work rather than toward every ring.
A reconciliation that closes
DedupedCall records joined to a recorded sale outcome matched per record against what Amazon Ads reports, over a fully closed window.
The implementation, on Amazon Ads
Capture the Amazon click identifier, where one exists on landing
For off-Amazon destinations, capture and persist the click identifier as with any network. For on-Amazon destinations there is nothing to capture.
Persist it to the call record, joined to your job or CRM system
Store it against the call record at the moment the number is served, so the call and the click are joined before anyone picks up.
Send qualified calls sent back from the record
The call platform's webhook fires with the outcome once the office has dispositioned it, referencing the identifier captured at the visit. Dispatched to Amazon Ads through the Amazon Ads conversion API, for off-Amazon destinations only.
Deduplicate and reverse
Deduplication only arises for off-amazon conversions where both a tag and a server event exist. A job later cancelled should be adjusted, particularly where you're uploading at the booked stage rather than the completed one.

The honestanswers.
No buzzwords, no upsell. If we don’t know, we say so.
01Can Amazon Ads track phone calls to my business?
Not from Sponsored ads, which keep shoppers on Amazon. For Amazon DSP traffic to your site, use a dedicated tracking number and count sold calls yourself.
02Does Amazon Attribution cover phone sales?
No. Amazon Attribution measures how off-Amazon ads drive Amazon sales, the opposite direction, so it says nothing about calls to your business.
03Why isn't number swapped enough to optimize on?
Because call volume and call quality are barely related. A channel producing lots of short unqualified calls looks excellent to bidding optimized on rings.
04How does the identifier survive to qualified calls sent back?
It doesn't, as a cookie — the gap is too long. It has to be written onto the call record, joined to your job or CRM system at the point of ad click, where it lives as a field rather than as browser storage.
05What does Amazon Ads need to accept the conversion?
For off-Amazon conversions: an event, a timestamp, a value and the click identifier. For on-Amazon conversions: nothing, because the measurement is not yours to do.
06How long does this take to build?
Two to four days for the implementation, plus a closed reconciliation window before we'd call it verified. Capture and persistence are the fiddly parts; the import itself is usually an afternoon.
07Can I do this myself?
Yes, and the reference pages on this site cover the mechanics. The part that's genuinely tedious rather than clever is keeping the Amazon click identifier, where one exists alive through multi-step forms and a call that arrives days after the visit, which fails silently at every stage.
