How to track phone call to sale for Reddit Ads

For a lot of businesses the phone is the conversion, and a website tag can see none of it. Getting this right needs two separate things: dynamic number insertion so the call carries a source at all, and a recorded outcome so a wrong number isn't worth the same as a booked job. Almost every implementation we open has the first and not the second. On Reddit Ads the specifics that matter are the click identifier (the rdt_cid click identifier), the import mechanism (the Reddit Conversions API), and Reddit deduplicates on the conversion ID carried on both the pixel event and the server event. The chain only works end to end if the identifier is captured on landing and stored on the call record, joined to your job or CRM system — no cookie survives the gap between ad click and qualified calls sent back.

The problem

Where this funnel usually breaks

Reddit · Phone call → sale-specific issues
Leak #01

A hard-coded number insertion can't reach

A number in a header graphic, a footer or a sticky mobile bar can't be swapped, and those calls arrive with no source at all.

Leak #02

Every call counted equally

A thirty-second wrong number and a booked job teach bidding exactly the same thing.

Leak #03

Click-to-call firing no event

On mobile the customer taps the number. If the tel: link fires nothing, the highest-intent path is invisible.

Reddit and phone sales: expect research, not calls from the ad

On Reddit, phone call to sale is a niche case. Capture rdt_cid with the tracking number session, send a Lead through the Reddit Conversions API for a qualified call, and send the sold job as a Purchase with its value. Most Reddit-influenced callers phone later, after a branded search, so Reddit's own count will be low.

Redditors ask a subreddit before they phone anyone, and that shapes the whole funnel. The click from a Reddit ad lands someone who reads your site, reads the comments on your ad and leaves. If they call, it tends to be after a search for your business name a few days later, with a new session and a number credited to Google. The direct ad-click-then-call path is thin unless you sell something Reddit audiences already discuss, such as specialist car repair, home solar or a niche B2B service.

Because of that, the useful build here is modest. Make sure the number pool reads rdt_cid and stores it with the call, so the few direct calls are credited. Send a qualified call as Lead and the sold job as Purchase with its value through the Conversions API, using the hashed caller phone number if your account accepts it. Check Reddit's current identifier list.

To size Reddit's real effect on calls, compare branded search call volume and total calls in the weeks Reddit runs against weeks it doesn't. That before-and-after comparison will say more than the platform's last-click count, which will consistently understate a channel whose callers take the long way round.

Architecture

The exact event sequence

Five stages. Stage two is where most of the loss happens, and it's usually a phone number rendered inside an image. The identifier has to survive all of them.

  1. Step 1

    Ad click

Identifier captured on landing, at the visit — not at the call, by which point the session context is gone.

  2. Step 2

    Number swapped

Dynamic insertion across every template, including header images and the sticky mobile bar.

  3. Step 3

    Call connected

The call platform records it against the session, which is how it carries a campaign.

  4. Step 4

    Outcome recorded

Qualified, booked, sold. Duration is a proxy; the office's own disposition is the truth.

  5. Step 5

    Qualified calls sent back

Only the ones that turned into work, so bidding stops buying wrong numbers.

Diagnostic sequence

What's specific to Reddit Ads

The funnel logic above is the same wherever you advertise. These are the parts that change because it's Reddit Ads.

  1. 1

Click identifier: the rdt_cid click identifier

Reddit appends rdt_cid to your landing page URL, and the Reddit Pixel keeps its own identifier in the _rdt_uuid cookie. Reddit's audience is unusually privacy-aware — ad-blocker and tracker-blocker usage on Reddit traffic runs well above the web average — so the share of visits where the pixel never loads at all is higher here than on any other network in this list. The URL parameter is the identifier that survives; the cookie often does not.

  2. 2

    Import mechanism: the Conversions API

Server events posted to Reddit's Conversions API with the click identifier and hashed customer information. Reddit's implementation is younger than Meta's and its documentation moves — confirm the current endpoint, event names and required fields against Reddit's own developer docs rather than an integration blog post.

  3. 3

    Deduplication

The pixel and the Conversions API event must carry the same conversion identifier for the same action. Because so much Reddit traffic never runs the pixel at all, a lot of accounts skip the pixel entirely and send server-side only — which is a legitimate choice here in a way it rarely is elsewhere, and it removes the deduplication problem completely. Decide deliberately rather than running both and hoping.

  4. 4

    Window and timing

Reddit's default attribution windows are shorter than Meta's and are configurable. Check what your account is set to before reconciling anything, and verify the accepted event-freshness limit for server events against Reddit's current documentation.

  5. 5

    The Reddit gotcha

Reddit converts on a delay and on trust. People read a thread, leave, think about it, and come back through a branded search a week later — which is a genuine Reddit-driven conversion that Reddit will never be credited for and Google will happily claim. If Reddit is judged purely on last-click inside its own window, it will always look worse than it is. Build the measurement, then argue about attribution with that context on the table.

Source-of-truth validation

How to prove the chain works

One real journey, followed all the way, then a reconciliation. Neither on its own is enough.

Source of truthcall records joined to a recorded sale outcome
  • A live Reddit ad clicked, and the identifier confirmed present on the landing URL.
  • The same identifier confirmed on the call record, joined to your job or CRM system after a full real journey through every step.
  • Qualified calls sent back confirmed arriving at Reddit Ads, verified by the events received and matched in Reddit Ads Manager, reconciled against your own records.
  • Call records joined to a recorded sale outcome reconciled against Reddit Ads per record over a fully closed window.
  • The same reconciliation repeated 30 days later.

Straight talk

When this doesn't apply to you

Worth checking before you build anything, because two of these are common and both mean the work isn't worth doing.

  • If your calls come overwhelmingly from a Google Business Profile listing rather than from paid clicks, those aren't ad conversions and shouldn't be uploaded as any. Track them separately.
  • If you are not running Reddit at meaningful spend, skip it. And if your Reddit strategy is organic community presence rather than ads, none of this applies — that traffic has no click identifier by definition.
  • If your cycle from click to qualified calls sent back regularly exceeds the import window, the final event can't drive bidding whatever you build. Optimize toward a qualified call by duration instead and use the later data for budget decisions rather than for bidding.
  • If almost none of your call records carry a click identifier today, that's the whole project. Fix capture first — the import is the easy half and no tooling rescues a record with nothing to reference.

What you get

The implementation, on Reddit Ads

Item 01

Capture the rdt_cid click identifier on landing

Read rdt_cid from the landing URL and persist it server-side on first sight. Do not build on the pixel's cookie — on this audience specifically, assuming the pixel ran is the mistake.

Item 02

Persist it to the call record, joined to your job or CRM system

Store it against the call record at the moment the number is served, so the call and the click are joined before anyone picks up.

Item 03

Send qualified calls sent back from the record

The call platform's webhook fires with the outcome once the office has dispositioned it, referencing the identifier captured at the visit. Dispatched to Reddit Ads through the Reddit Conversions API.

Item 04

Deduplicate and reverse

Reddit deduplicates on the conversion id carried on both the pixel event and the server event. A job later cancelled should be adjusted, particularly where you're uploading at the booked stage rather than the completed one.

Got questions?

The honestanswers.

No buzzwords, no upsell. If we don’t know, we say so.

01Why does Reddit show almost no phone call conversions?

Because Reddit users usually search for you later and call from that visit, which credits Google. Make sure rdt_cid is captured for the few who call directly.

02Is Reddit worth running for a phone-driven local business?

Rarely. It fits better when your service is something people actively discuss on Reddit; otherwise spend goes further on search and Nextdoor.

03Why isn't number swapped enough to optimize on?

Because call volume and call quality are barely related. A channel producing lots of short unqualified calls looks excellent to bidding optimized on rings.

04How does the identifier survive to qualified calls sent back?

It doesn't, as a cookie — the gap is too long. It has to be written onto the call record, joined to your job or CRM system at the point of ad click, where it lives as a field rather than as browser storage.

05What does Reddit Ads need to accept the conversion?

An event name Reddit recognizes, a conversion identifier matched to the pixel if you are also running one, a timestamp, hashed customer information, and the click identifier where you have it.

06How long does this take to build?

Two to four days for the implementation, plus a closed reconciliation window before we'd call it verified. Capture and persistence are the fiddly parts; the import itself is usually an afternoon.

07Can I do this myself?

Yes, and the reference pages on this site cover the mechanics. The part that's genuinely tedious rather than clever is keeping the rdt_cid click identifier alive through multi-step forms and a call that arrives days after the visit, which fails silently at every stage.
