How to track referral to closed sale for Reddit Ads

A referral is the one channel that reliably steals credit in both directions: a stale paid identifier claims a word-of-mouth sale, or a referral parameter overwrites a legitimate paid click. Whichever wins is usually an accident of storage logic nobody chose. On Reddit Ads the specifics that matter are the click identifier (the rdt_cid click identifier), the import mechanism (the Reddit Conversions API), and Reddit deduplicates on the conversion ID carried on both the pixel event and the server event. The chain only works end to end if the identifier is captured on landing and stored on the closed sale, with its true origin recorded — no cookie survives the gap between referral link shared and reward issued.

The problem

Where this funnel usually breaks

Reddit · Referral → closed sale-specific issues
Leak #01

Stale paid identifiers claiming referral sales

The more successful your referral program becomes, the better your paid campaigns appear to perform. That is a genuinely perverse outcome and an entirely avoidable one.

Leak #02

Referral parameters overwriting live paid clicks

The opposite failure. A referred visitor who then clicks a paid ad and buys is a paid sale, and referral-wins logic hands it to the referrer.

Leak #03

Reward-driven repeat purchases counted as new

The reward exists to produce a second order. Counting it as acquisition double-counts the same customer.

Reddit and referrals: tell organic thread links from paid clicks

Track referral to closed sale on Reddit by reading rdt_cid server-side on landing, storing it with the referral parameter and timestamps, and sending only paid-won sales as a Purchase through the Reddit Conversions API with the order ID. Organic Reddit posts with referral links carry no rdt_cid and are referrals, not ads.

Reddit is the one platform where your customers post their referral links in public. Subreddits exist specifically for trading referral codes, and product communities fill up with "here is my link" comments. That traffic arrives with a Reddit referrer and a referral parameter but no rdt_cid, and it is a referral, not a Reddit Ads result. Any rule that treats a reddit.com referrer as paid will hand all of it to the ad account.

The precedence logic has to run on the server here. A large share of Reddit visitors block the pixel, so a browser-side rule that reads cookies to decide who won simply never runs for them, and those orders default to whatever the order system assumes. Read rdt_cid and the referral parameter from the landing URL on the server, timestamp both and apply the written rule there.

Send paid-won orders through the Conversions API using the order ID as the conversion identifier; with pixel loss this high, server-only is a defensible choice. Keep referral-won orders out, and watch for code-farming: a referral link posted in a public thread produces volume and rewards without being a real recommendation, which is worth reporting as its own source.

Architecture

The exact event sequence

Five stages. The break is at stage three and it is a logic decision, not a technical failure. Two identifiers arrive and something has to choose. The identifier has to survive all of them.

  1. Step 1

    Referral link shared

Person to person. No campaign produced this.

  2. Step 2

    Referred visitor arrives

With a referral parameter, onto a browser that may already hold a paid identifier from last week.

  3. Step 3

    Precedence decided

The moment that determines who gets credit, and the moment almost nobody has consciously configured.

  4. Step 4

    Sale closed

    Attributed to whichever identifier survived.

  5. Step 5

    Reward issued

Which frequently produces a second purchase that must not inherit the first sale's attribution.

Diagnostic sequence

What's specific to Reddit Ads

The funnel logic above is the same wherever you advertise. These are the parts that change because it's Reddit Ads.

  1. 1

Click identifier: the rdt_cid click identifier

Reddit appends rdt_cid to your landing page URL, and the Reddit Pixel keeps its own identifier in the _rdt_uuid cookie. Reddit's audience is unusually privacy-aware — ad-blocker and tracker-blocker usage on Reddit traffic runs well above the web average — so the share of visits where the pixel never loads at all is higher here than on any other network in this list. The URL parameter is the identifier that survives; the cookie often does not.

  2. 2

    Import mechanism: the Conversions API

Server events posted to Reddit's Conversions API with the click identifier and hashed customer information. Reddit's implementation is younger than Meta's and its documentation moves — confirm the current endpoint, event names and required fields against Reddit's own developer docs rather than an integration blog post.

  3. 3

    Deduplication

The pixel and the Conversions API event must carry the same conversion identifier for the same action. Because so much Reddit traffic never runs the pixel at all, a lot of accounts skip the pixel entirely and send server-side only — which is a legitimate choice here in a way it rarely is elsewhere, and it removes the deduplication problem completely. Decide deliberately rather than running both and hoping.

  4. 4

    Window and timing

Reddit's default attribution windows are shorter than Meta's and are configurable. Check what your account is set to before reconciling anything, and verify the accepted event-freshness limit for server events against Reddit's current documentation.

  5. 5

    The Reddit gotcha

Reddit converts on a delay and on trust. People read a thread, leave, think about it, and come back through a branded search a week later — which is a genuine Reddit-driven conversion that Reddit will never be credited for and Google will happily claim. If Reddit is judged purely on last-click inside its own window, it will always look worse than it is. Build the measurement, then argue about attribution with that context on the table.

Source-of-truth validation

How to prove the chain works

One real journey, followed all the way, then a reconciliation. Neither on its own is enough.

Source of truthyour order or CRM record, with referral and paid sources held apart
  • A live Reddit ad clicked, and the identifier confirmed present on the landing URL.
  • The same identifier confirmed on the closed sale, with its true origin recorded after a full real journey through every step.
  • Reward issued confirmed arriving at Reddit Ads, verified by the events received and matched in Reddit Ads Manager, reconciled against your own records.
  • Your order or crm record, with referral and paid sources held apart reconciled against Reddit Ads per record over a fully closed window.
  • The same reconciliation repeated 30 days later.

Straight talk

When this doesn't apply to you

Worth checking before you build anything, because two of these are common and both mean the work isn't worth doing.

  • With no referral program there is no conflict, and this is an ordinary purchase funnel.
  • If you are not running Reddit at meaningful spend, skip it. And if your Reddit strategy is organic community presence rather than ads, none of this applies — that traffic has no click identifier by definition.
  • If your cycle from click to reward issued regularly exceeds the import window, the final event can't drive bidding whatever you build. Optimize toward sales with both source parameters retained for later analysis instead and use the later data for budget decisions rather than for bidding.
  • If almost none of your closed sales by origin carry a click identifier today, that's the whole project. Fix capture first — the import is the easy half and no tooling rescues a record with nothing to reference.

What you get

The implementation, on Reddit Ads

Item 01

Capture the rdt_cid click identifier on landing

Read rdt_cid from the landing URL and persist it server-side on first sight. Do not build on the pixel's cookie — on this audience specifically, assuming the pixel ran is the mistake.

Item 02

Persist it to the closed sale, with its true origin recorded

Store both identifiers with timestamps and apply a written precedence rule, rather than letting last-write-wins decide by accident.

Item 03

Send reward issued from the record

Your order or CRM system, with an explicit source-precedence rule applied and recorded on the record itself. Dispatched to Reddit Ads through the Reddit Conversions API.

Item 04

Deduplicate and reverse

Reddit deduplicates on the conversion id carried on both the pixel event and the server event. Refunds reverse against whichever source was credited.

Got questions?

The honestanswers.

No buzzwords, no upsell. If we don’t know, we say so.

01Do sales from referral links posted on Reddit count as Reddit Ads conversions?

No. Without rdt_cid there was no ad click. They are referral sales that happened to be shared on Reddit, and should be reported that way.

02Should we block our referral links from referral-code subreddits?

That is a program decision. For tracking, tag that source separately so its rewards and sales do not inflate either the referral or the paid numbers.

03Why isn't referred visitor arrives enough to optimize on?

Because referral link clicks measure how much your customers like you, which is worth knowing and is not something a bidding algorithm can act on.

04How does the identifier survive to reward issued?

It doesn't, as a cookie — the gap is too long. It has to be written onto the closed sale, with its true origin recorded at the point of referral link shared, where it lives as a field rather than as browser storage.

05What does Reddit Ads need to accept the conversion?

An event name Reddit recognizes, a conversion identifier matched to the pixel if you are also running one, a timestamp, hashed customer information, and the click identifier where you have it.

06How long does this take to build?

Two to four days for the implementation, plus a closed reconciliation window before we'd call it verified. Capture and persistence are the fiddly parts; the import itself is usually an afternoon.

07Can I do this myself?

Yes, and the reference pages on this site cover the mechanics. The part that's genuinely tedious rather than clever is keeping the rdt_cid click identifier alive through multi-step forms and two competing identifiers in one browser, which fails silently at every stage.
