How to track directory listing to enquiry for Reddit Ads
The listing lives on someone else's domain, the enquiry form is theirs, and the lead arrives by email. Nothing in that chain carries a click identifier, which makes this the funnel most often reported as "direct" when it is nothing of the sort. On Reddit Ads the specifics that matter are the click identifier (the rdt_cid click identifier), the import mechanism (the Reddit Conversions API), and Reddit deduplicates on the conversion ID carried on both the pixel event and the server event. The chain only works end to end if the identifier is captured on landing and stored on the enquiry in your CRM or inbox — no cookie survives the gap between directory listing viewed and job or deal won.

Where this funnel usually breaks
Directory leads recorded as direct or unknown
They arrive by email, so unless intake tags them they vanish into the same bucket as word of mouth, and the directory spend cannot be evaluated at all.
Paid and free directory placements pooled
One you pay for and one you do not. Averaging them hides whether the paid placement is worth anything.
Lead volume reported instead of won work
Directories optimize for lead volume because that is what they charge for. Quality is the variable that decides whether the channel works.
Specific to Reddit × Directory listing → enquiry
Reddit threads send readers to directory reviews, not your form
A directory enquiry carries no rdt_cid, because Reddit's click identifier only arrives on your landing URL and the enquiry happens on the directory's form. Record the directory at intake as the CRM source. Send Reddit's Conversions API only enquiries from your own site, and log Reddit as a discovery answer for directory leads.
Reddit users check other sources before buying. A thread recommending a contractor, a software tool or a law firm is routinely followed by a visit to that business's directory reviews, and those reviews often get quoted or argued over inside the thread itself. A Reddit ad that starts the process gets no credit for the directory enquiry at the end of it, because the rdt_cid is lost the moment the reader leaves your page for a review site.
Two practical consequences. Since a lot of Reddit traffic never runs the pixel, a server-side-only setup on your own site is the clean choice, and it makes plain that directory leads are outside it rather than missing from it. And free-text source answers at intake tend to say 'online' or 'reviews', so list Reddit as an explicit option or it will never appear in the data.
Do not send directory-delivered leads to Reddit matched on hashed email. Reddit's attribution windows are short, so any matches it found would mostly be coincidences, not the thread-driven influence you are trying to see.
Architecture
The exact event sequence
Five stages. There is no browser session anywhere in the first three stages. The measurement has to be built at intake, in your own system, or it cannot be built at all. The identifier has to survive all of them.
Step 1
Directory listing viewed
On the directory's domain. You will never see this event; the directory may report it.
Step 2
Enquiry submitted
On the directory's form. Still not your property.
Step 3
Lead delivered
By email or API, usually with the directory named somewhere in the payload.
Step 4
Lead qualified
Directory lead quality varies enormously between directories and is the whole reason to measure this.
Step 5
Job or deal won
The only stage with money attached.
Diagnostic sequence
What's specific to Reddit Ads
The funnel logic above is the same wherever you advertise. These are the parts that change because it's Reddit Ads.
- 1
Click identifier: the rdt_cid click identifier
Reddit appends rdt_cid to your landing page URL, and the Reddit Pixel keeps its own identifier in the _rdt_uuid cookie. Reddit's audience is unusually privacy-aware — ad-blocker and tracker-blocker usage on Reddit traffic runs well above the web average — so the share of visits where the pixel never loads at all is higher here than on any other network in this list. The URL parameter is the identifier that survives; the cookie often does not.
- 2
Import mechanism: the Conversions API
Server events posted to Reddit's Conversions API with the click identifier and hashed customer information. Reddit's implementation is younger than Meta's and its documentation moves — confirm the current endpoint, event names and required fields against Reddit's own developer docs rather than an integration blog post.
- 3
Deduplication
The pixel and the Conversions API event must carry the same conversion identifier for the same action. Because so much Reddit traffic never runs the pixel at all, a lot of accounts skip the pixel entirely and send server-side only — which is a legitimate choice here in a way it rarely is elsewhere, and it removes the deduplication problem completely. Decide deliberately rather than running both and hoping.
- 4
Window and timing
Reddit's default attribution windows are shorter than Meta's and are configurable. Check what your account is set to before reconciling anything, and verify the accepted event-freshness limit for server events against Reddit's current documentation.
- 5
The Reddit gotcha
Reddit converts on a delay and on trust. People read a thread, leave, think about it, and come back through a branded search a week later — which is a genuine Reddit-driven conversion that Reddit will never be credited for and Google will happily claim. If Reddit is judged purely on last-click inside its own window, it will always look worse than it is. Build the measurement, then argue about attribution with that context on the table.
Source-of-truth validation
How to prove the chain works
One real journey, followed all the way, then a reconciliation. Neither on its own is enough.
- A live Reddit ad clicked, and the identifier confirmed present on the landing URL.
- The same identifier confirmed on the enquiry in your CRM or inbox after a full real journey through every step.
- Job or deal won confirmed arriving at Reddit Ads, verified by the events received and matched in Reddit Ads Manager, reconciled against your own records.
- Your crm, with the directory source recorded at intake reconciled against Reddit Ads per record over a fully closed window.
- The same reconciliation repeated 30 days later.
Straight talk
When this doesn't apply to you
Worth checking before you build anything, because two of these are common and both mean the work isn't worth doing.
- If you are not paying for directory placement, tracking this tells you something interesting and changes no decision.
- If you are not running Reddit at meaningful spend, skip it. And if your Reddit strategy is organic community presence rather than ads, none of this applies — that traffic has no click identifier by definition.
- If your cycle from click to job or deal won regularly exceeds the import window, the final event can't drive bidding whatever you build. Optimize toward tagged enquiry count per directory instead and use the later data for budget decisions rather than for bidding.
- If almost none of your directory enquiries carry a click identifier today, that's the whole project. Fix capture first — the import is the easy half and no tooling rescues a record with nothing to reference.

The implementation, on Reddit Ads
Capture the rdt_cid click identifier on landing
Read rdt_cid from the landing URL and persist it server-side on first sight. Do not build on the pixel's cookie — on this audience specifically, assuming the pixel ran is the mistake.
Persist it to the enquiry in your CRM or inbox
Tag the source at the moment the lead is created, from the delivery address or payload. It is the only point at which the origin is knowable.
Send job or deal won from the record
Your CRM, on the won job, with the directory recorded as the source at intake. There is no click identifier to import — this channel is measured, not attributed. Dispatched to Reddit Ads through the Reddit Conversions API.
Deduplicate and reverse
Reddit deduplicates on the conversion id carried on both the pixel event and the server event. Lost and disqualified deals reverse.

The honestanswers.
No buzzwords, no upsell. If we don’t know, we say so.
01Why don't Reddit ads show conversions when leads say they found us on a directory?
The reader moved from your ad to a review site and enquired there. The rdt_cid never reached a page that could pass it on, so Reddit has nothing to match.
02Should Reddit be an option in my lead-source field?
Yes, as an explicit choice. Free-text answers rarely name the forum, and the intake answer is the only view you get of Reddit's share of directory-delivered enquiries.
03Why isn't enquiry submitted enough to optimize on?
Because directories are paid per lead and therefore optimize for lead volume, which means enquiry counts measure their incentive rather than your outcome.
04How does the identifier survive to job or deal won?
It doesn't, as a cookie — the gap is too long. It has to be written onto the enquiry in your CRM or inbox at the point of directory listing viewed, where it lives as a field rather than as browser storage.
05What does Reddit Ads need to accept the conversion?
An event name Reddit recognizes, a conversion identifier matched to the pixel if you are also running one, a timestamp, hashed customer information, and the click identifier where you have it.
06How long does this take to build?
Two to four days for the implementation, plus a closed reconciliation window before we'd call it verified. Capture and persistence are the fiddly parts; the import itself is usually an afternoon.
07Can I do this myself?
Yes, and the reference pages on this site cover the mechanics. The part that's genuinely tedious rather than clever is keeping the rdt_cid click identifier alive through multi-step forms and a lead that arrives by email with no session behind it, which fails silently at every stage.
