How to track directory listing to enquiry for Google Ads
The listing lives on someone else's domain, the enquiry form is theirs, and the lead arrives by email. Nothing in that chain carries a click identifier, which makes this the funnel most often reported as "direct" when it is nothing of the sort. On Google Ads the specifics that matter are the click identifier (gclid, gbraid and wbraid), the import mechanism (Google's offline conversion import), and conversion actions deduplicate on their own counting setting rather than an event ID, so the setting matters more here than the payload. The chain only works end to end if the identifier is captured on landing and stored on the enquiry in your CRM or inbox — no cookie survives the gap between directory listing viewed and job or deal won.

Where this funnel usually breaks
Directory leads recorded as direct or unknown
They arrive by email, so unless intake tags them they vanish into the same bucket as word of mouth, and the directory spend cannot be evaluated at all.
Paid and free directory placements pooled
One you pay for and one you do not. Averaging them hides whether the paid placement is worth anything.
Lead volume reported instead of won work
Directories optimize for lead volume because that is what they charge for. Quality is the variable that decides whether the channel works.

Google Ads and directory enquiries: no gclid survives the listing
On Google Ads, a directory enquiry carries no gclid, gbraid or wbraid, because any click landed on the directory's domain. Record the directory as the source in your CRM at intake, and import to Google only enquiries from your own site that carry a captured click identifier.
The case that confuses Google Ads reporting is the brand search. Someone searches your business name, sees your ad next to a directory's listing of you, and enquires through the directory because that is where the reviews are. Google records an ad click with no conversion and your CRM records a directory lead. Both are correct, and no upload joins them, because the enquiry never touched a page where your tag could read the gclid. Check auction insights on your brand campaign to see whether a directory is also bidding on your name.
Enhanced Conversions for leads does not rescue this. It matches an uploaded outcome to hashed details your tag captured when a form was submitted on your own site; a directory form belongs to someone else, so there is nothing on Google's side for the upload to attach to. Keep directory leads out of every Google conversion action, and set the action that does apply, your own enquiry form, to count one per click.
If you also run Local Services Ads, treat them as a directory you happen to pay Google for: leads are charged and reviewed in the Local Services interface rather than arriving through your offline import. Tag them as their own source at intake, separate from the review sites, or the paid-versus-free comparison that justifies the spend never gets made.
Architecture
The exact event sequence
Five stages. There is no browser session anywhere in the first three stages. The measurement has to be built at intake, in your own system, or it cannot be built at all. The identifier has to survive all of them.
Step 1
Directory listing viewed
On the directory's domain. You will never see this event; the directory may report it.
Step 2
Enquiry submitted
On the directory's form. Still not your property.
Step 3
Lead delivered
By email or API, usually with the directory named somewhere in the payload.
Step 4
Lead qualified
Directory lead quality varies enormously between directories and is the whole reason to measure this.
Step 5
Job or deal won
The only stage with money attached.
Diagnostic sequence
What's specific to Google Ads
The funnel logic above is the same wherever you advertise. These are the parts that change because it's Google Ads.
- 1
Click identifier: gclid, gbraid and wbraid
Three parameters, not one. gclid is the long-standing identifier; gbraid and wbraid arrive on iOS traffic where privacy constraints prevent the usual one. Capture code that names only gclid loses a growing share, silently, and the loss is invisible until you audit how many records carry an identifier.
- 2
Import mechanism: offline conversion import
Uploaded against the click identifier, either through the Google Ads API or as a file. The upload is the easy part; what limits it is how many of your records carry an identifier at all. Verify the current column format against Google's own template — it has changed before.
- 3
Deduplication
There's no shared event ID mechanism like Meta's. What matters instead is the counting setting on each conversion action — 'one' for lead-type conversions so a repeat submitter doesn't count three times, 'every' for ecommerce where a second purchase is a second sale. This is the single most common misconfiguration we find in Google Ads accounts.
- 4
Window and timing
Google's offline import window is 90 days from the click. Anything older can't be matched, and rows outside it fail as unmatched without much explanation. Measure your median click-to-outcome time against that before designing anything.
- 5
The Google Ads gotcha
A conversion action that stops receiving hits is flagged as inactive 30 days later — by which point a month of budget has already run against a missing signal. Check the last-received date on every action monthly; it takes two minutes and it's the cheapest monitoring available.
Source-of-truth validation
How to prove the chain works
One real journey, followed all the way, then a reconciliation. Neither on its own is enough.
- A live Google Ads ad clicked, and the identifier confirmed present on the landing URL.
- The same identifier confirmed on the enquiry in your CRM or inbox after a full real journey through every step.
- Job or deal won confirmed arriving at Google Ads, verified by the match rate on the upload, not the success message.
- Your crm, with the directory source recorded at intake reconciled against Google Ads per record over a fully closed window.
- The same reconciliation repeated 30 days later.
Straight talk
When this doesn't apply to you
Worth checking before you build anything, because two of these are common and both mean the work isn't worth doing.
- If you are not paying for directory placement, tracking this tells you something interesting and changes no decision.
- If you're running Performance Max exclusively and haven't separated your conversion actions, the import will work and the reporting won't tell you much. Worth sorting the account structure first.
- If your cycle from click to job or deal won regularly exceeds the import window, the final event can't drive bidding whatever you build. Optimize toward tagged enquiry count per directory instead and use the later data for budget decisions rather than for bidding.
- If almost none of your directory enquiries carry a click identifier today, that's the whole project. Fix capture first — the import is the easy half and no tooling rescues a record with nothing to reference.
What working looks like
Job or deal won attributed to the click
Server-sideWeeks later if necessary, because the identifier lives on the enquiry in your CRM or inbox rather than in a cookie.
Google Ads bidding fed the real outcome
8+ EMQVia offline conversion import, so it optimizes toward won work from directory enquiries rather than toward enquiries received.

The implementation, on Google Ads
Capture gclid, gbraid and wbraid on landing
Auto-tagging appends the identifier. Confirm it's enabled in every account — it gets switched off for cleaner analytics URLs more often than you'd expect, and that single setting removes conversion attribution, Enhanced Conversions and offline import in one go.
Persist it to the enquiry in your CRM or inbox
Tag the source at the moment the lead is created, from the delivery address or payload. It is the only point at which the origin is knowable.
Send job or deal won from the record
Your CRM, on the won job, with the directory recorded as the source at intake. There is no click identifier to import — this channel is measured, not attributed. Dispatched to Google Ads through Google's offline conversion import.
Deduplicate and reverse
Conversion actions deduplicate on their own counting setting rather than an event id, so the setting matters more here than the payload. Lost and disqualified deals reverse.

The honestanswers.
No buzzwords, no upsell. If we don’t know, we say so.
01Can I import directory leads into Google Ads as offline conversions?
Only if the lead carries a gclid, gbraid or wbraid, and a directory-delivered lead never does. Rows without one fail as unmatched; the right home for these leads is a source field in your CRM.
02Why does my brand campaign get clicks while leads say they came from a directory?
Searchers often compare your ad with a directory's listing of you and enquire wherever the reviews are. That is a real assist Google cannot be credited for, and auction insights will show whether the directory is bidding on your name too.
03Why isn't enquiry submitted enough to optimize on?
Because directories are paid per lead and therefore optimize for lead volume, which means enquiry counts measure their incentive rather than your outcome.
04How does the identifier survive to job or deal won?
It doesn't, as a cookie — the gap is too long. It has to be written onto the enquiry in your CRM or inbox at the point of directory listing viewed, where it lives as a field rather than as browser storage.
05What does Google Ads need to accept the conversion?
A click identifier inside the 90-day window, a conversion action name that matches one configured in the account, a conversion timestamp for when the outcome happened, and a value. Read the match rate after uploading — a file can upload perfectly and match nothing.
06How long does this take to build?
Two to four days for the implementation, plus a closed reconciliation window before we'd call it verified. Capture and persistence are the fiddly parts; the import itself is usually an afternoon.
07Can I do this myself?
Yes, and the reference pages on this site cover the mechanics. The part that's genuinely tedious rather than clever is keeping gclid, gbraid and wbraid alive through multi-step forms and a lead that arrives by email with no session behind it, which fails silently at every stage.
