How to track chat conversation to qualified lead for Google Ads

Chat widgets generate an enormous number of conversations and a small number of leads, and the two are usually counted as one thing. Most chat volume is existing customers with support questions, and the widget itself is a third-party script on someone else's infrastructure, which is where the click identifier tends to disappear. On Google Ads the specifics that matter are the click identifier (gclid, gbraid and wbraid), the import mechanism (Google's offline conversion import), and conversion actions deduplicate on their own counting setting rather than an event ID, so the setting matters more here than the payload. The chain only works end to end if the identifier is captured on landing and stored on the conversation record in your chat platform, joined to the CRM contact it created — no cookie survives the gap between chat opened and opportunity or booking created.

The problem

Where this funnel usually breaks

Google Ads · Chat → qualified lead-specific issues
Leak #01

The identifier never reaches the chat platform

The widget has its own session concept and does not read your cookies. It has to be passed in deliberately when the widget initializes.

Leak #02

Support conversations counted as leads

Usually the majority of chat volume. Counting them teaches the algorithm to find people with problems rather than people with budgets.

Leak #03

Bot conversations counted as human ones

An automated flow that collects an email is not the same signal as a real exchange, and the two convert very differently.

Specific to Google Ads × Chat → qualified lead

Google Ads chat leads: gclid into the widget, qualified in the CRM

On Google Ads, import a "qualified chat lead" conversion action from your CRM when a chat is marked as a sales conversation, matched on the gclid, gbraid or wbraid passed into the chat widget's visitor metadata. Count it once per click, keep chat started as a secondary action, and check whether Enhanced Conversions for Leads can use the chat-collected email.

Search visitors arrive with a question, which is why chat converts well from Google traffic and why so much of it is support. Someone searching your brand name plus "login" or "refund" opens the chat too. Before importing anything, split chat contacts by campaign type: brand campaigns will show high chat volume dominated by existing customers, non-brand campaigns fewer and better chats. That split alone usually explains why reported chat leads and booked revenue disagree.

The mechanics: read gclid, gbraid or wbraid on landing, store them first-party, and pass them into the widget at initialization as visitor attributes so they reach the contact the chat creates. Upload from the CRM through offline conversion import against the click ID, with counting set to one, since a visitor who opens three chats is still one lead. Enhanced Conversions for Leads is a fallback where the click ID is missing, but the Google tag usually can't see inside a third-party widget, so confirm the email can be supplied the way Google expects.

The most common Google-specific failure is a conversion action created by the chat vendor's own integration that fires on chat started and is set as primary. Smart Bidding then finds people who open chats, which on many sites means current customers. Demote it to secondary and make the CRM-qualified action primary. If qualified chats are rare, combine them with qualified form leads in one action rather than letting volume fall below what bidding can learn from.

Architecture

The exact event sequence

Five stages. The break is at the widget boundary. Chat platforms run their own scripts and store their own session state, and unless the click identifier is explicitly passed into the conversation's metadata, the CRM contact that results has no trace of the campaign that produced it. The identifier has to survive all of them.

  1. Step 1

    Chat opened

The widget was engaged. Volume only, and dominated by existing customers.

  2. Step 2

    Conversation started

A real exchange rather than a bounce off the greeting.

  3. Step 3

    Qualified as a sales conversation

Your team's judgment, not the widget's. This is the first meaningful signal.

  4. Step 4

    Contact created in the CRM

The lead exists as a record that can be attributed and followed.

  5. Step 5

    Opportunity or booking created

The money-adjacent event, wherever your funnel goes next.

Diagnostic sequence

What's specific to Google Ads

The funnel logic above is the same wherever you advertise. These are the parts that change because it's Google Ads.

  1. 1

Click identifier: gclid, gbraid and wbraid

Three parameters, not one. gclid is the long-standing identifier; gbraid and wbraid arrive on iOS traffic where privacy constraints prevent the usual one. Capture code that names only gclid loses a growing share, silently, and the loss is invisible until you audit how many records carry an identifier.

  2. 2

    Import mechanism: offline conversion import

Uploaded against the click identifier, either through the Google Ads API or as a file. The upload is the easy part; what limits it is how many of your records carry an identifier at all. Verify the current column format against Google's own template — it has changed before.

  3. 3

    Deduplication

There's no shared event ID mechanism like Meta's. What matters instead is the counting setting on each conversion action — 'one' for lead-type conversions so a repeat submitter doesn't count three times, 'every' for ecommerce where a second purchase is a second sale. This is the single most common misconfiguration we find in Google Ads accounts.

  4. 4

    Window and timing

Google's offline import window is 90 days from the click. Anything older can't be matched, and rows outside it fail as unmatched without much explanation. Measure your median click-to-outcome time against that before designing anything.

  5. 5

    The Google Ads gotcha

A conversion action that stops receiving hits is flagged as inactive 30 days later — by which point a month of budget has already run against a missing signal. Check the last-received date on every action monthly; it takes two minutes and it's the cheapest monitoring available.

Source-of-truth validation

How to prove the chain works

One real journey, followed all the way, then a reconciliation. Neither on its own is enough.

Source of truthyour CRM's contacts created from chat, filtered to the qualification your team actually applies
  • A live Google Ads ad clicked, and the identifier confirmed present on the landing URL.
  • The same identifier confirmed on the conversation record in your chat platform, joined to the CRM contact it created after a full real journey through every step.
  • Opportunity or booking created confirmed arriving at Google Ads, verified by the match rate on the upload, not the success message.
  • Your crm's contacts created from chat, filtered to the qualification your team actually applies reconciled against Google Ads per record over a fully closed window.
  • The same reconciliation repeated 30 days later.

Straight talk

When this doesn't apply to you

Worth checking before you build anything, because two of these are common and both mean the work isn't worth doing.

  • If your chat is purely a support channel and never produces sales conversations, there is nothing here to attribute and we will say so rather than build it.
  • If you're running Performance Max exclusively and haven't separated your conversion actions, the import will work and the reporting won't tell you much. Worth sorting the account structure first.
  • If your cycle from click to opportunity or booking created regularly exceeds the import window, the final event can't drive bidding whatever you build. Optimize toward CRM contacts created from chat, with a qualification flag instead and use the later data for budget decisions rather than for bidding.
  • If almost none of your conversation records carry a click identifier today, that's the whole project. Fix capture first — the import is the easy half and no tooling rescues a record with nothing to reference.

What you get

The implementation, on Google Ads

Item 01

Capture gclid, gbraid and wbraid on landing

Auto-tagging appends the identifier. Confirm it's enabled in every account — it gets switched off for cleaner analytics URLs more often than you'd expect, and that single setting removes conversion attribution, Enhanced Conversions and offline import in one go.

Item 02

Persist it to the conversation record in your chat platform, joined to the CRM contact it created

Pass the identifier into the widget's visitor metadata at initialization, and make sure the platform carries it onto the contact it creates rather than only onto the conversation.

Item 03

Send opportunity or booking created from the record

Your CRM, when the contact is created and qualified — not from the chat platform, which sees every support question as an equal event. Dispatched to Google Ads through Google's offline conversion import.

Item 04

Deduplicate and reverse

Conversion actions deduplicate on their own counting setting rather than an event id, so the setting matters more here than the payload. Nothing to reverse, but a contact later disqualified should not have been sent — which is why the qualification belongs before the dispatch rather than after.

Got questions?

The honestanswers.

No buzzwords, no upsell. If we don’t know, we say so.

01Should a chat started event be a Google Ads conversion?

Only as a secondary, observation-only action. As a primary action it trains bidding on chat volume, which is mostly existing customers.

02How do I get the gclid into my live chat leads?

Store it on landing and pass it into the chat widget as a visitor attribute when the widget loads, then confirm it appears on the CRM contact the chat creates. If it sits on the conversation but not the contact, the import has nothing to match.

03Why isn't conversation started enough to optimize on?

Because chats opened is mostly a measure of how many existing customers need help. It is a support metric wearing a marketing metric's clothes, and bidding on it buys support load.

04How does the identifier survive to opportunity or booking created?

It doesn't, as a cookie — the gap is too long. It has to be written onto the conversation record in your chat platform, joined to the CRM contact it created at the point of chat opened, where it lives as a field rather than as browser storage.

05What does Google Ads need to accept the conversion?

A click identifier inside the 90-day window, a conversion action name that matches one configured in the account, a conversion timestamp for when the outcome happened, and a value. Read the match rate after uploading — a file can upload perfectly and match nothing.

06How long does this take to build?

Two to four days for the implementation, plus a closed reconciliation window before we'd call it verified. Capture and persistence are the fiddly parts; the import itself is usually an afternoon.

07Can I do this myself?

Yes, and the reference pages on this site cover the mechanics. The part that's genuinely tedious rather than clever is keeping gclid, gbraid and wbraid alive through multi-step forms and a third-party chat widget with its own session state, which fails silently at every stage.
