How to track chat conversation to qualified lead for Amazon Ads
Chat widgets generate an enormous number of conversations and a small number of leads, and the two are usually counted as one thing. Most chat volume is existing customers with support questions, and the widget itself is a third-party script on someone else's infrastructure, which is where the click identifier tends to disappear. On Amazon Ads the specifics that matter are the click identifier (no click identifier for on-Amazon conversions), the import mechanism (the Amazon Ads conversion API, for off-Amazon destinations only), and Deduplication only arises for off-Amazon conversions where both a tag and a server event exist. The chain only works end to end if the identifier is captured on landing and stored on the conversation record in your chat platform, joined to the CRM contact it created — no cookie survives the gap between chat opened and opportunity or booking created.

Where this funnel usually breaks
The identifier never reaches the chat platform
The widget has its own session concept and does not read your cookies. It has to be passed in deliberately when the widget initializes.
Support conversations counted as leads
Usually the majority of chat volume. Counting them teaches the algorithm to find people with problems rather than people with budgets.
Bot conversations counted as human ones
An automated flow that collects an email is not the same signal as a real exchange, and the two convert very differently.

Amazon Ads and chat leads: only for DSP traffic to your site
Amazon Ads has no chat conversion to track for sponsored ads, because shoppers ask questions on Amazon, not in your widget. Only Amazon DSP traffic to your own site can produce chat leads, sent back through Amazon's conversion API against a captured click identifier. For most sellers, chat stays out of Amazon measurement entirely.
Shoppers who click a sponsored ad stay on Amazon, ask questions through Amazon's buyer-seller messaging, and buy there. None of that touches your chat widget, and none of it can be attributed per conversation. If your own site sees a rise in chats during a big Amazon push, that is a halo effect, measurable only by comparing the campaign period with a similar one before it, not by any identifier.
Amazon DSP to your own site is the only case with a click to follow. If you run it for a high-consideration product sold direct, such as furniture, appliances or equipment where people chat before buying, capture the DSP click identifier on landing (confirm its parameter name in your DSP setup), store it, and pass it into the widget. Send the CRM-qualified lead back through Amazon's conversion API with the CRM contact ID for deduplication.
Most DSP inventory is display and streaming TV, where the effect is view-through and the chat visitor arrives days later without a click ID. For those, the honest measure is the change in qualified chats from the regions the DSP campaign covered against a holdout region, not a per-chat match, and certainly not Amazon's own view-through count.
Architecture
The exact event sequence
Five stages. The break is at the widget boundary. Chat platforms run their own scripts and store their own session state, and unless the click identifier is explicitly passed into the conversation's metadata, the CRM contact that results has no trace of the campaign that produced it. The identifier has to survive all of them.
Step 1
Chat opened
The widget was engaged. Volume only, and dominated by existing customers.
Step 2
Conversation started
A real exchange rather than a bounce off the greeting.
Step 3
Qualified as a sales conversation
Your team's judgment, not the widget's. This is the first meaningful signal.
Step 4
Contact created in the CRM
The lead exists as a record that can be attributed and followed.
Step 5
Opportunity or booking created
The money-adjacent event, wherever your funnel goes next.
Diagnostic sequence
What's specific to Amazon Ads
The funnel logic above is the same wherever you advertise. These are the parts that change because it's Amazon Ads.
- 1
Click identifier: no click identifier for on-Amazon conversions
This is the important thing and most guidance skips it: Amazon Ads spans two very different situations. Sponsored ad formats driving to an Amazon listing produce conversions Amazon measures itself, with no click identifier passed to you and no per-order join available. Amazon DSP driving to your own site is a different case, where a click identifier can reach your landing page and be captured like any other network's.
- 2
Import mechanism: conversion upload, where applicable
Where you are driving to your own site, conversions can be sent back. Where you are driving to an Amazon listing, the transaction happens inside Amazon's checkout and there is nothing to send — Amazon's own attribution reporting is the only view available and it is aggregated.
- 3
Deduplication
For on-Amazon purchases the question does not apply, because you are not measuring the conversion at all — Amazon is. For traffic to your own site the usual shared-identifier pattern applies.
- 4
Window and timing
Amazon's attribution windows differ by ad product and by whether the conversion happens on Amazon or on your site. Establish which product and which destination you are reporting on before comparing any figure.
- 5
The Amazon Ads gotcha
The structural limit is worth stating plainly to anyone selling you on this: for sales that complete inside Amazon, per-order click attribution does not exist and cannot be built. Amazon Attribution gives aggregated, delayed reporting. Anyone offering per-order joins on Amazon-completed sales is describing something that is not available.
Source-of-truth validation
How to prove the chain works
One real journey, followed all the way, then a reconciliation. Neither on its own is enough.
- A live Amazon Ads ad clicked, and the identifier confirmed present on the landing URL.
- The same identifier confirmed on the conversation record in your chat platform, joined to the CRM contact it created after a full real journey through every step.
- Opportunity or booking created confirmed arriving at Amazon Ads, verified by Amazon's own attribution reporting for on-Amazon sales, and your normal reconciliation for off-Amazon conversions.
- Your crm's contacts created from chat, filtered to the qualification your team actually applies reconciled against Amazon Ads per record over a fully closed window.
- The same reconciliation repeated 30 days later.
Straight talk
When this doesn't apply to you
Worth checking before you build anything, because two of these are common and both mean the work isn't worth doing.
- If your chat is purely a support channel and never produces sales conversations, there is nothing here to attribute and we will say so rather than build it.
- If all your Amazon Ads spend drives to Amazon listings, there is no conversion tracking build here — only a reporting exercise inside Amazon's own tools, and it is worth knowing that before commissioning anything.
- If your cycle from click to opportunity or booking created regularly exceeds the import window, the final event can't drive bidding whatever you build. Optimize toward CRM contacts created from chat, with a qualification flag instead and use the later data for budget decisions rather than for bidding.
- If almost none of your conversation records carry a click identifier today, that's the whole project. Fix capture first — the import is the easy half and no tooling rescues a record with nothing to reference.
What working looks like
Opportunity or booking created attributed to the click
Server-sideWeeks later if necessary, because the identifier lives on the conversation record in your chat platform, joined to the CRM contact it created rather than in a cookie.
Amazon Ads bidding fed the real outcome
8+ EMQVia conversion upload, where applicable, so it optimizes toward conversations that become real leads rather than toward chats opened.
A reconciliation that closes
DedupedYour crm's contacts created from chat, filtered to the qualification your team actually applies matched per record against what Amazon Ads reports, over a fully closed window.
The implementation, on Amazon Ads
Capture the Amazon click identifier, where one exists on landing
For off-Amazon destinations, capture and persist the click identifier as with any network. For on-Amazon destinations there is nothing to capture.
Persist it to the conversation record in your chat platform, joined to the CRM contact it created
Pass the identifier into the widget's visitor metadata at initialization, and make sure the platform carries it onto the contact it creates rather than only onto the conversation.
Send opportunity or booking created from the record
Your CRM, when the contact is created and qualified — not from the chat platform, which sees every support question as an equal event. Dispatched to Amazon Ads through the Amazon Ads conversion API, for off-Amazon destinations only.
Deduplicate and reverse
Deduplication only arises for off-amazon conversions where both a tag and a server event exist. Nothing to reverse, but a contact later disqualified should not have been sent — which is why the qualification belongs before the dispatch rather than after.

The honestanswers.
No buzzwords, no upsell. If we don’t know, we say so.
01Can Amazon Ads track chats on my own website?
Only for Amazon DSP traffic that lands on your site with a click identifier you capture and pass into the chat. Sponsored ads send shoppers to Amazon, so they never reach your widget.
02Is chat tracking worth building for an Amazon DSP campaign?
Only for high-consideration products sold direct where chat is a real sales step. Otherwise measure the DSP with a geo holdout.
03Why isn't conversation started enough to optimize on?
Because chats opened is mostly a measure of how many existing customers need help. It is a support metric wearing a marketing metric's clothes, and bidding on it buys support load.
04How does the identifier survive to opportunity or booking created?
It doesn't, as a cookie — the gap is too long. It has to be written onto the conversation record in your chat platform, joined to the CRM contact it created at the point of chat opened, where it lives as a field rather than as browser storage.
05What does Amazon Ads need to accept the conversion?
For off-Amazon conversions: an event, a timestamp, a value and the click identifier. For on-Amazon conversions: nothing, because the measurement is not yours to do.
06How long does this take to build?
Two to four days for the implementation, plus a closed reconciliation window before we'd call it verified. Capture and persistence are the fiddly parts; the import itself is usually an afternoon.
07Can I do this myself?
Yes, and the reference pages on this site cover the mechanics. The part that's genuinely tedious rather than clever is keeping the Amazon click identifier, where one exists alive through multi-step forms and a third-party chat widget with its own session state, which fails silently at every stage.
