How to track referral to closed sale for TikTok Ads

A referral is the one channel that reliably steals credit in both directions: a stale paid identifier claims a word-of-mouth sale, or a referral parameter overwrites a legitimate paid click. Whichever wins is usually an accident of storage logic nobody chose. On TikTok Ads the specifics that matter are the click identifier (ttclid), the import mechanism (the Events API), and deduplication uses a shared event ID between the pixel and the Events API, the same principle as Meta. The chain only works end to end if the identifier is captured on landing and stored on the closed sale, with its true origin recorded — no cookie survives the gap between referral link shared and reward issued.

The problem

Where this funnel usually breaks

TikTok · Referral → closed sale-specific issues
Leak #01

Stale paid identifiers claiming referral sales

The more successful your referral program becomes, the better your paid campaigns appear to perform. That is a genuinely perverse outcome and an entirely avoidable one.

Leak #02

Referral parameters overwriting live paid clicks

The opposite failure. A referred visitor who then clicks a paid ad and buys is a paid sale, and referral-wins logic hands it to the referrer.

Leak #03

Reward-driven repeat purchases counted as new

The reward exists to produce a second order. Counting it as acquisition double-counts the same customer.

Specific to TikTok × Referral → closed sale

TikTok and referrals: separate creator codes from customer referrals

Track referral to closed sale on TikTok by storing ttclid and the referral parameter with timestamps, applying a written precedence rule, and sending only paid-won sales as CompletePayment through the Events API with the order ID as the event ID. Creator affiliate codes are a third source and need their own label.

On TikTok the word referral covers two different things, and most stacks lump them together. A customer sharing their personal link with a friend is a referral. A creator posting your product with a discount code is paid or affiliate media that happens to look like one. If both land in the same referral bucket, organic creator sales get pulled out of TikTok's credit and the platform looks weaker than it is. Give creator codes their own source value and precedence slot.

The capture problem is the familiar TikTok one, made worse by the precedence logic. If ttclid was never added to the capture list, every sale with a TikTok click looks like a pure referral or direct order, and referral-wins looks correct by accident. Before writing any rule, check what share of last month's orders carry a ttclid at all.

Send CompletePayment from the order system only when the stored rule says the TikTok click won, using the order ID as the event ID so the pixel and server agree. Referral-won orders can go as a custom event for diagnostics. Keep reward redemptions out entirely: the second order exists because of your incentive, not a TikTok ad.

Architecture

The exact event sequence

Five stages. The break is at stage three and it is a logic decision, not a technical failure. Two identifiers arrive and something has to choose. The identifier has to survive all of them.

  1. Step 1

    Referral link shared

Person to person. No campaign produced this.

  2. Step 2

    Referred visitor arrives

With a referral parameter, onto a browser that may already hold a paid identifier from last week.

  3. Step 3

    Precedence decided

The moment that determines who gets credit, and the moment almost nobody has consciously configured.

  4. Step 4

    Sale closed

    Attributed to whichever identifier survived.

  5. Step 5

    Reward issued

Which frequently produces a second purchase that must not inherit the first sale's attribution.

Diagnostic sequence

What's specific to TikTok Ads

The funnel logic above is the same wherever you advertise. These are the parts that change because it's TikTok Ads.

  1. 1

    Click identifier: ttclid

TikTok's click identifier, appended to the landing URL. Capture it on landing and persist it exactly as you would gclid or fbclid — it's the strongest matching signal available and the most commonly missing one, because TikTok is often added to a stack that was built around Google and Meta.

  2. 2

    Import mechanism: the Events API

Structurally similar to the other server-side conversion APIs: event name, timestamp, event ID, hashed user identifiers, event properties. TikTok's exact field names change more often than the other major platforms', so build against their current documentation rather than a blog post — including this one.

  3. 3

    Deduplication

Send the same event ID from the browser pixel and the server event. The mechanics mirror Meta's closely enough that a team who has done one can do the other, but verify TikTok's current requirements rather than assuming parity — the deduplication window in particular isn't a figure we'll guess at.

  4. 4

    Window and timing

Verify the current attribution and import windows in TikTok's documentation. They differ from Google's and Meta's, and quoting a number here that goes stale would be worse than sending you to the source.

  5. 5

    The TikTok gotcha

TikTok is usually the third platform added to a stack, and it typically inherits whatever assumptions were made for Google and Meta. The most common result is that ttclid is never captured at all, because the capture code was written naming gclid and fbclid and nobody revisited it.

Source-of-truth validation

How to prove the chain works

One real journey, followed all the way, then a reconciliation. Neither on its own is enough.

Source of truthyour order or CRM record, with referral and paid sources held apart
  • A live TikTok ad clicked, and the identifier confirmed present on the landing URL.
  • The same identifier confirmed on the closed sale, with its true origin recorded after a full real journey through every step.
  • Reward issued confirmed arriving at TikTok Ads, verified by TikTok's own event diagnostics, plus a reconciliation against your records.
  • Your order or crm record, with referral and paid sources held apart reconciled against TikTok Ads per record over a fully closed window.
  • The same reconciliation repeated 30 days later.

Straight talk

When this doesn't apply to you

Worth checking before you build anything, because two of these are common and both mean the work isn't worth doing.

  • With no referral program there is no conflict, and this is an ordinary purchase funnel.
  • If TikTok is a small share of your spend, the effort is better spent making Google and Meta correct first — the same infrastructure then extends to TikTok as one additional tag rather than a separate project.
  • If your cycle from click to reward issued regularly exceeds the import window, the final event can't drive bidding whatever you build. Optimize toward sales with both source parameters retained for later analysis instead and use the later data for budget decisions rather than for bidding.
  • If almost none of your closed sales by origin carry a click identifier today, that's the whole project. Fix capture first — the import is the easy half and no tooling rescues a record with nothing to reference.

What you get

The implementation, on TikTok Ads

Item 01

Capture ttclid on landing

ttclid is appended on ad clicks. Add it explicitly to your capture list — the single most common TikTok tracking fault is capture code that predates TikTok being in the account.

Item 02

Persist it to the closed sale, with its true origin recorded

Store both identifiers with timestamps and apply a written precedence rule, rather than letting last-write-wins decide by accident.

Item 03

Send reward issued from the record

Your order or CRM system, with an explicit source-precedence rule applied and recorded on the record itself. Dispatched to TikTok Ads through the Events API.

Item 04

Deduplicate and reverse

Deduplication uses a shared event id between the pixel and the events api, the same principle as meta. Refunds reverse against whichever source was credited.

Got questions?

The honestanswers.

No buzzwords, no upsell. If we don’t know, we say so.

01Do TikTok creator discount codes count as referrals?

Treat them as their own source. They are paid or affiliate placements, so lumping them in with customer-to-customer referrals understates TikTok and overstates word of mouth.

02Why do my referral numbers look high since we started TikTok ads?

Usually because ttclid is not being captured, so TikTok-driven orders arrive with only a referral parameter or nothing at all. Check identifier coverage on recent orders before changing the precedence rule.

03Why isn't referred visitor arrives enough to optimize on?

Because referral link clicks measure how much your customers like you, which is worth knowing and is not something a bidding algorithm can act on.

04How does the identifier survive to reward issued?

It doesn't, as a cookie — the gap is too long. It has to be written onto the closed sale, with its true origin recorded at the point of referral link shared, where it lives as a field rather than as browser storage.

05What does TikTok Ads need to accept the conversion?

A standard event name, an event timestamp, a shared event ID, hashed and normalized user identifiers, and ttclid where available. Confirm the current required fields in TikTok's documentation before building.

06How long does this take to build?

Two to four days for the implementation, plus a closed reconciliation window before we'd call it verified. Capture and persistence are the fiddly parts; the import itself is usually an afternoon.

07Can I do this myself?

Yes, and the reference pages on this site cover the mechanics. The part that's genuinely tedious rather than clever is keeping ttclid alive through multi-step forms and two competing identifiers in one browser, which fails silently at every stage.
