Steer conversion tracking: which ads actually brought cars into your bays?
Steer's AutoOps scheduler fills your calendar, Reserve with Google books straight from search results, and Steer Phones sorts every call by outcome. Your Google Ads and Meta accounts still can't tell an oil change from a brake job. AutoOps already saves the ad click ID whenever it's in the booking link; we carry it through to the paid repair order and send that value back to your ads.

Steer · what breaks
What goes wrong with Steer and your ads
- 01
My ads get credit for booking clicks, not for the jobs I invoice
Google and Meta see a booking at best. They never see whether that car got a tire rotation or a full exhaust replacement, so the bidding chases cheap appointments and spends the same on both.
- 02
Steer says my text campaign earned it, Google says the ad did
Steer credits any paid invoice within 35 days of a campaign text or email to the most recent campaign. If Google Ads also counted that customer's booking from an ad click, adding the two reports together pays for one car twice on paper.
- 03
Google bookings show up with no ad behind them
Reserve with Google lets drivers book from search results without loading your website, so none of your site tags fire. Those appointments reach your shop calendar with no source your ad reports can read, so you can't weigh what the Book button on your Google listing earns against what your paid clicks earn.
- 04
Steer Phones knows the call booked, but not which ad made it ring
Steer's AI tags a call 'Appointment Booked' and applies the value you set, but its docs don't connect that call to an ad. Call-heavy campaigns look weaker than they are, and budget drifts to whatever is easiest to count.
Steer · the fix
What changes — Steer
Google Ads and Meta learn from paid repair orders
Invoice values from your shop management system go back to the click that started the booking, so bidding favors the campaigns that bring in brake, exhaust and electrical work.
Every booking path labeled
Website scheduler, Reserve with Google, website chat and phone each show up as their own source instead of one blended total.
Ad revenue and retention revenue kept apart
Reminder and campaign bookings stay in Steer's attribution report; new-customer jobs from ads go to your ad platforms. Neither double-counts the other.
Steer · architecture
What Steer and AutoOps actually let you hook into
Steer's website booking runs on AutoOps, which publishes developer docs. Here's what they cover and what they leave out.
- 1
A script on your own pages, not a foreign iframe
AutoOps loads from one script tag and opens as a popup over your site or renders embedded in a placeholder. That keeps the booking on pages you control.
- 2
Documented JavaScript events
AutoOps.onEvent exposes each step, from ao-opened to ao-appointment-booked, which carries the customer, vehicle, issues and source tracking.
- 3
Click IDs and UTMs stored automatically
UTM fields plus gclid, gbraid, wbraid, fbclid, msclkid and ttclid are saved when present in the URL, along with AutoOps' own lead-source and campaign fields.
- 4
A Google Analytics switch with thin docs
A script setting sends events to the Google Analytics tracker on the page. The guide doesn't say which events or whether it's GA4, so we confirm before relying on it.
- 5
Webhooks on request
AutoOps offers server-side webhooks through its Public API by contacting their team. No Google Ads, Meta Pixel, GTM or Zapier connection is documented.
Steer · diagnose
Where Steer tracking breaks, in diagnostic order
On Steer, the click ID is usually captured. The break happens later, between the booking and the invoice.
- 01
Count what fires on one test booking
The AutoOps Analytics setting plus a GTM tag can double-report the same appointment.
- 02
Check the click ID on the booking
Book from a URL with a test gclid and check that it lands on the AutoOps booking record, not just in the address bar.
- 03
Follow the booking into the shop system
Confirm whether the source survives into the repair order once Steer syncs it to Tekmetric, Shopmonkey or your system.
- 04
Split Reserve with Google and chat bookings
See what source AutoOps records when nobody visited your site.
- 05
Trace how ad calls reach Steer Phones
Check whether ad calls arrive on a number you can tell apart from your main line.
- 06
Compare paid invoices against every report
Google Ads, Meta and Steer attribution over the same closed month, invoice by invoice.

Source of truth
Paid repair orders in the shop management system Steer syncs with, matched to AutoOps appointment records and their stored source tracking
- A test booking from an ad-tagged URL, with the gclid confirmed on the AutoOps booking record.
- One online booking produces one Google Ads conversion and one Meta event, both carrying the same event ID.
- The same booking followed to a repair order and its paid invoice value.
- A Reserve with Google booking checked and reported under its own source.
- A reminder-driven booking confirmed absent from ad acquisition.
- Paid invoices matched record by record against Google Ads and Meta over a closed month.
- Rerun 30 days on, and again whenever your website or the AutoOps script settings change.

Steer · when not to buy
When you don't need this on Steer
Plenty of shops on Steer are fine without a rebuild.
- If nearly all your work is repeat customers brought back by Steer reminders and ad spend is small, Steer's campaign attribution already answers your question.
- If you don't run Google Ads or Meta at all and new customers find you through your Google listing, there's no bidding system to feed.
- If your only paid channel is Local Services Ads, Google bills those per lead inside its own dashboard and there's no ad click on your site for this build to match, so it changes little.
- If the only fault is the AutoOps Analytics setting and a GTM tag both firing, switching one off is a quick settings change you can make yourself.

FAQ
Steer questions, answered
Not directly. AutoOps can send events to Google Analytics and saves the gclid when it's in the booking link, but documents no Google Ads connection. Conversions get there through a tag listening for the booking event or an upload from your repair orders.
Yes. AutoOps documents JavaScript events on your page, including ao-appointment-booked, so a listener can hand each booking to GTM with its source details.
Steer credits a paid invoice within 35 days of a campaign to the most recent campaign the customer received; Google Ads credits ad clicks under its own rules. One repair order can end up claimed by both.
Not by your website tags, because the driver books from search results and never loads your site. We report them as their own channel and check what source AutoOps records for them.
Yes, as long as the click ID saved with the booking stays attached through to the invoice. We send the paid value server-side, using Google's offline conversion import and Meta Conversions API.
Not on their own. Steer Phones marks booked calls and applies your value, but it doesn't document which ad drove the call, so we have to establish the call's source first.
