Outdoorsy conversion tracking: know which RV trips your ads actually booked
You pay for Google and Meta clicks to your own rental site, yet many trips show up as Outdoorsy bookings and the ad dashboards can't say which ones they earned. Marketplace trips and direct Wheelbase bookings share one calendar, and depending on how the widget is installed, checkout can run on a Wheelbase domain or open in a new tab. We split the two by source, follow direct renters through checkout, and send only confirmed, paid trips to your ad accounts.

Outdoorsy · what breaks
What goes wrong when an RV fleet advertises alongside Outdoorsy
- 01
"Our ad brought them in, then they booked us on Outdoorsy"
A renter clicks your ad, compares, then books the same motorhome on outdoorsy.com, where your own tags don't run. You paid for the click, the trip lands in your calendar as a marketplace booking, and Google and Meta never see it.
- 02
Marketplace trips credited to your ads
If conversions come from the full booking list, marketplace trips get reported as ad wins. Return on ad spend looks great while Smart Bidding learns from renters who never saw an ad.
- 03
Booking requests counted as booked trips
A request awaiting approval isn't money yet. Counting it trains bidding on declined trips, and a refundable security deposit can inflate the value of real ones.
- 04
Checkout slips away from your website
On Wix and Squarespace, Wheelbase opens checkout in a new tab by design, and its standalone shop checks out on widget.wheelbasepro.com. Every hop like that is a place where UTM tags and the click ID get dropped, so direct trips arrive with no ad attached.
Outdoorsy · the fix
What changes after the fix — Outdoorsy
Direct and marketplace trips reported apart
Each booking is labeled by source, so ads are judged on trips booked through your site and Outdoorsy revenue is its own channel.
Paid, approved trips are the conversion
Google Ads and Meta get the booking once it's confirmed, valued at rental plus add-ons minus discounts, without deposits, taxes or renter fees.
The ad click tied to the confirmed trip
The click is saved on your own domain before checkout, matched to the confirmed booking, and sent from a first-party server container on your subdomain.
Outdoorsy · architecture
What Outdoorsy and Wheelbase actually let you hook into
Wheelbase is the Outdoorsy Group's fleet software: it syncs RV fleets to the marketplace and puts a booking engine on your own site. These are the hooks its docs describe.
- 1
Analytics IDs on the booking widget
Each widget component accepts a Tag Manager container ID, a Google Analytics ID and a Segment token. We confirm whether they send a booking event or only page activity.
- 2
Checkout that can leave your page
Wheelbase's standalone shop, checkout included, runs on widget.wheelbasepro.com, and on iframe-based builders like Wix and Squarespace the embedded widget opens checkout in a new tab by design. We confirm where checkout runs on your install.
- 3
Booking export with a source field
The Partner API's booking report labels each booking's origin, such as marketplace or your own site, with booked date, status and a money breakdown, and can filter out cancellations.
- 4
No click ID field and no webhooks
The published API spec has nowhere to store a GCLID or fbclid and lists no webhooks, so the click is kept on your side and bookings are pulled on a schedule. Wheelbase's pricing page lists full API access on the Enterprise plan, so we confirm what yours includes.
- 5
Legacy SDK campaign fields
The older Wheelbase SDK can pass campaign, source and medium when a booking starts. If your site still runs it, we check those values arrive.
Outdoorsy · diagnose
Where Outdoorsy tracking breaks, in the order we check
Start with the source split, because the costliest mistake for an RV fleet is crediting ads with trips the marketplace sold.
- 01
Count direct versus marketplace trips
One closed month from the booking export, grouped by source.
- 02
Compare ad conversions with direct confirmed trips only
More conversions than direct trips means marketplace bookings or pending requests are leaking in.
- 03
Follow a tagged click through Wheelbase checkout
Do the UTM values and click ID survive wherever checkout runs on your install: inline, a new tab, or a Wheelbase domain?
- 04
Check when the conversion fires and what value it carries
At request or at confirmation; with or without the security deposit and renter fees.
- 05
Look for ad-assisted marketplace bookings
Brand-search clicks lined up by date against Outdoorsy trips, read as a trend since individual renters can't be matched.

Source of truth
Wheelbase booking records for your fleet: confirmed trips by booking source and booked date, with rental amount, add-ons and discount
- A test booking from an ad-tagged link on your site, confirmed in Wheelbase with your site as the source.
- One Google Ads and one Meta conversion for it, carrying the confirmed value without the deposit.
- An unapproved booking request produces no primary conversion.
- An Outdoorsy marketplace trip in the same window produces no ad conversion.
- A cancelled direct trip retracted in Google Ads.
- Every direct confirmed trip in a closed month matched to its conversion, then rechecked 30 days later.

Outdoorsy · when not to buy
When an RV fleet on Outdoorsy doesn't need this
Plenty of rental operators are better off putting the money somewhere else first.
- If nearly every trip comes through the Outdoorsy marketplace and no ads point at your own site, there's nothing for Google or Meta to optimize. Work on your listings instead.
- If your website only links out to your outdoorsy.com listing, no ad platform can be credited for those trips. Add a Wheelbase booking engine first.
- If you run a few units, mostly rebook past renters by phone and spend little on ads, a monthly booking export split by source is enough.
- If you advertise on one platform and the widget's own Google Analytics setup already matches your direct confirmed trips, leave it alone.

FAQ
Outdoorsy questions, answered
Not trips booked on outdoorsy.com itself; we haven't found a documented place for your own tag on a marketplace listing. Direct bookings through the Wheelbase engine on your site can be tracked properly, and those are what your ad spend should be judged on.
Usually the conversions come from the whole booking list, mixing Outdoorsy marketplace trips with direct ones, or count requests before you approve them. The source field in the Wheelbase booking export separates them.
Its components accept a Tag Manager container ID, a Google Analytics ID and a Segment token. Wheelbase's docs don't say which booking events those send, so we test what fires at checkout on a live booking and whether it survives the move into checkout.
Yes. Wheelbase documents that checkout opens in a new tab on those builders because their code blocks run inside iframes. The click has to be saved before that tab opens.
The confirmed trip, once it's paid and approved, valued at rental nights and add-ons. A request can be logged as a secondary signal, never the optimization goal.
Be careful. Wheelbase's API masks a marketplace renter's email and phone until they have a confirmed booking with you, and Outdoorsy's terms should be checked before using those contacts for ads.
