How to track webinar attendance to purchase for TikTok Ads
The registration is cheap, the attendance is the filter, and the purchase arrives days after the room emptied. Almost every webinar funnel reports the registration, which is the one stage that costs the prospect nothing and predicts the least. On TikTok Ads the specifics that matter are the click identifier (ttclid), the import mechanism (the Events API), and deduplication uses a shared event ID between the pixel and the Events API, the same principle as Meta. The chain only works end to end if the identifier is captured on landing and stored on the order or opportunity that followed the webinar — no cookie survives the gap between ad click and purchase.

Where this funnel usually breaks
Registrations optimized as the conversion
They are cheap and easy, so the platform will find you a great many people who register and never appear. The cost per registration falls and the revenue does not move.
Replay buyers attributed to email
The purchase link comes from a follow-up email, so without a persisted identifier the entire replay cohort shows up as email traffic and the paid campaign that filled the seat gets nothing.
Attendance minutes ignored
Someone who watched four minutes and someone who watched the full pitch are the same attendance record and are not remotely the same prospect.

TikTok webinar ads: mobile registrants, a long pitch, a late sale
Report the post-webinar sale to TikTok as CompletePayment through the Events API, sent from your billing or CRM system with the ttclid captured on the registration landing page and the registrant's hashed email and phone. Treat CompleteRegistration as a reporting signal. Confirm the attribution window in your account, because the sale arrives days after the click.
TikTok can fill a consumer webinar on money, fitness, side income or creative skills. It is a hard sell for a B2B demo aimed at buyers with job titles. The registrant arrives in TikTok's in-app browser on a phone, from a video they watched for a few seconds, and is then asked to sit through a live pitch of an hour or more. Expect a steep drop between registration and attendance and plan the budget around it.
The ttclid lands on your page, not the webinar host's. Because TikTok is usually wired after Google and Meta, the hidden field that passes identifiers into the registration often names only gclid and fbclid. Add ttclid to that list. Collect phone as well as email, since a buyer who registered on a phone may check out from a laptop, and hashed email and phone give the Events API keys that do not depend on the device.
CompletePayment is the honest optimization target, but a small webinar program rarely produces enough purchases for TikTok's delivery to learn from. A practical middle step is to send attendance past a watch threshold as its own event and optimize on that while purchases accumulate. Check which events your account lets you optimize toward before building around one.
Architecture
The exact event sequence
Five stages. Two breaks, not one: the identifier is lost at registration because the form is hosted elsewhere, and then lost again between the webinar and the purchase because days pass and the device changes. The identifier has to survive all of them.
Step 1
Ad click
The identifier arrives on the registration page. Capture it here — the webinar platform will not.
Step 2
Registration
On a webinar platform's hosted form in most cases, which means the identifier has to be pushed in as a field rather than read from the page.
Step 3
Attendance
Registration-to-attendance runs between a third and a half for cold traffic. It is the single largest drop in this funnel.
Step 4
Replay watched
A real stage. Replay buyers are a meaningful share of revenue and are invisible if you only count live attendance.
Step 5
Purchase
Days later, from an email, on a different device. This is the event worth optimizing toward and the hardest one to connect.
Diagnostic sequence
What's specific to TikTok Ads
The funnel logic above is the same wherever you advertise. These are the parts that change because it's TikTok Ads.
- 1
Click identifier: ttclid
TikTok's click identifier, appended to the landing URL. Capture it on landing and persist it exactly as you would gclid or fbclid — it's the strongest matching signal available and the most commonly missing one, because TikTok is often added to a stack that was built around Google and Meta.
- 2
Import mechanism: the Events API
Structurally similar to the other server-side conversion APIs: event name, timestamp, event ID, hashed user identifiers, event properties. TikTok's exact field names change more often than the other major platforms', so build against their current documentation rather than a blog post — including this one.
- 3
Deduplication
Send the same event ID from the browser pixel and the server event. The mechanics mirror Meta's closely enough that a team who has done one can do the other, but verify TikTok's current requirements rather than assuming parity — the deduplication window in particular isn't a figure we'll guess at.
- 4
Window and timing
Verify the current attribution and import windows in TikTok's documentation. They differ from Google's and Meta's, and quoting a number here that goes stale would be worse than sending you to the source.
- 5
The TikTok gotcha
TikTok is usually the third platform added to a stack, and it typically inherits whatever assumptions were made for Google and Meta. The most common result is that ttclid is never captured at all, because the capture code was written naming gclid and fbclid and nobody revisited it.
Source-of-truth validation
How to prove the chain works
One real journey, followed all the way, then a reconciliation. Neither on its own is enough.
- A live TikTok ad clicked, and the identifier confirmed present on the landing URL.
- The same identifier confirmed on the order or opportunity that followed the webinar after a full real journey through every step.
- Purchase confirmed arriving at TikTok Ads, verified by TikTok's own event diagnostics, plus a reconciliation against your records.
- Your billing or crm record, joined to the webinar attendance log reconciled against TikTok Ads per record over a fully closed window.
- The same reconciliation repeated 30 days later.
Straight talk
When this doesn't apply to you
Worth checking before you build anything, because two of these are common and both mean the work isn't worth doing.
- If your webinar is a support or onboarding session for existing customers, there is no acquisition funnel here and nothing to attribute.
- If TikTok is a small share of your spend, the effort is better spent making Google and Meta correct first — the same infrastructure then extends to TikTok as one additional tag rather than a separate project.
- If your cycle from click to purchase regularly exceeds the import window, the final event can't drive bidding whatever you build. Optimize toward attendance of at least a defined watch duration instead and use the later data for budget decisions rather than for bidding.
- If almost none of your post-webinar orders carry a click identifier today, that's the whole project. Fix capture first — the import is the easy half and no tooling rescues a record with nothing to reference.
What working looks like
Purchase attributed to the click
Server-sideWeeks later if necessary, because the identifier lives on the order or opportunity that followed the webinar rather than in a cookie.
TikTok bidding fed the real outcome
8+ EMQVia the Events API, so it optimizes toward purchases that followed the webinar rather than toward registrations.
A reconciliation that closes
DedupedYour billing or crm record, joined to the webinar attendance log matched per record against what TikTok Ads reports, over a fully closed window.
The implementation, on TikTok Ads
Capture ttclid on landing
ttclid is appended on ad clicks. Add it explicitly to your capture list — the single most common TikTok tracking fault is capture code that predates TikTok being in the account.
Persist it to the order or opportunity that followed the webinar
Push the identifier into the registration record as a custom field, then carry it onto the contact so a purchase a week later still resolves without depending on a cookie.
Send purchase from the record
Your billing or CRM system, on the purchase, with the webinar attendance joined on the registrant's email so the campaign that filled the seat gets the credit. Dispatched to TikTok Ads through the Events API.
Deduplicate and reverse
Deduplication uses a shared event id between the pixel and the events api, the same principle as meta. Refunds reverse. Webinar-driven purchases are frequently impulse decisions and refund at above-average rates, which is worth measuring rather than assuming.

The honestanswers.
No buzzwords, no upsell. If we don’t know, we say so.
01What TikTok event should a webinar purchase use?
CompletePayment with the order value and currency, sent from the billing or CRM record. Send registration as CompleteRegistration and keep it out of the optimization goal once purchase volume allows.
02Is TikTok a good channel for B2B webinars?
Usually not. It fits consumer education and coaching webinars far better than B2B demos, and no tracking setup changes who is in the audience.
03Why isn't registration enough to optimize on?
Because registration-to-purchase varies by a factor of several across channels, and bidding pointed at registrations reliably finds the channel with the worst rate — it produces the cheapest registrations.
04How does the identifier survive to purchase?
It doesn't, as a cookie — the gap is too long. It has to be written onto the order or opportunity that followed the webinar at the point of ad click, where it lives as a field rather than as browser storage.
05What does TikTok Ads need to accept the conversion?
A standard event name, an event timestamp, a shared event ID, hashed and normalized user identifiers, and ttclid where available. Confirm the current required fields in TikTok's documentation before building.
06How long does this take to build?
Two to four days for the implementation, plus a closed reconciliation window before we'd call it verified. Capture and persistence are the fiddly parts; the import itself is usually an afternoon.
07Can I do this myself?
Yes, and the reference pages on this site cover the mechanics. The part that's genuinely tedious rather than clever is keeping ttclid alive through multi-step forms and the multi-day gap between the webinar and the purchase, which fails silently at every stage.
