How to track webinar attendance to purchase for Meta Ads
The registration is cheap, the attendance is the filter, and the purchase arrives days after the room emptied. Almost every webinar funnel reports the registration, which is the one stage that costs the prospect nothing and predicts the least. On Meta Ads the specifics that matter are the click identifier (fbclid, which becomes the _fbc cookie), the import mechanism (the Conversions API), and deduplication is on event_name and event_id together, so both paths must send the same ID and the identically-cased name. The chain only works end to end if the identifier is captured on landing and stored on the order or opportunity that followed the webinar — no cookie survives the gap between ad click and purchase.

Where this funnel usually breaks
Registrations optimized as the conversion
They are cheap and easy, so the platform will find you a great many people who register and never appear. The cost per registration falls and the revenue does not move.
Replay buyers attributed to email
The purchase link comes from a follow-up email, so without a persisted identifier the entire replay cohort shows up as email traffic and the paid campaign that filled the seat gets nothing.
Attendance minutes ignored
Someone who watched four minutes and someone who watched the full pitch are the same attendance record and are not remotely the same prospect.
Specific to Meta × Webinar → purchase
Meta webinar funnels: the purchase often lands outside 7-day click
Send the post-webinar order to Meta as a Purchase through the Conversions API, from your billing or CRM system, with the fbc and fbp values saved at registration plus the registrant's hashed email. Keep CompleteRegistration as a reporting event. Schedule sessions close to the ad click so the purchase can fall inside Meta's 7-day click window.
Meta fills webinar seats cheaply, and that is the trap. Optimizing on CompleteRegistration lets delivery find people who tap register on their phone and never open the join link. Show-up rates from paid social are often lower than from search, so a cost per registration that looks excellent in Ads Manager can hide the most expensive attendee you buy. Watch cost per attendee, not cost per registration.
Timing matters more here than on search. If a Monday click registers someone for a session the following Thursday, and they buy from the replay email on Saturday, the purchase is 12 days after the click and outside Meta's default 7-day click window. It will not be attributed however clean the CAPI payload is. Run evergreen or near-term sessions for paid traffic so the sale still has a chance to count.
If you register people with Meta's instant forms, nobody lands on your site and there is no fbc to store, so the later Purchase matches only on the hashed email and phone you send, or on the form's lead ID where your CRM setup passes it back. Optimize on Purchase only if each ad set produces enough of them per week to leave the learning phase. Otherwise use a custom conversion for attendance past your watch threshold and keep registration as reporting only.
Architecture
The exact event sequence
Five stages. Two breaks, not one: the identifier is lost at registration because the form is hosted elsewhere, and then lost again between the webinar and the purchase because days pass and the device changes. The identifier has to survive all of them.
Step 1
Ad click
The identifier arrives on the registration page. Capture it here — the webinar platform will not.
Step 2
Registration
On a webinar platform's hosted form in most cases, which means the identifier has to be pushed in as a field rather than read from the page.
Step 3
Attendance
Registration-to-attendance runs between a third and a half for cold traffic. It is the single largest drop in this funnel.
Step 4
Replay watched
A real stage. Replay buyers are a meaningful share of revenue and are invisible if you only count live attendance.
Step 5
Purchase
Days later, from an email, on a different device. This is the event worth optimizing toward and the hardest one to connect.
Diagnostic sequence
What's specific to Meta Ads
The funnel logic above is the same wherever you advertise. These are the parts that change because it's Meta Ads.
- 1
Click identifier: fbclid, which becomes the _fbc cookie
fbclid arrives on the landing URL and is normally written into the _fbc cookie. If it isn't captured on landing, _fbc never exists — and _fbc is the strongest click signal Meta has, so its absence caps your match quality regardless of what else you send. Forward _fbp too, from the browser rather than regenerating it server-side.
- 2
Import mechanism: the Conversions API
Server events go through CAPI with an action_source describing where the conversion happened. Offline outcomes flow through the same API rather than a separate product. Verify current field names against Meta's documentation before building — this surface changes.
- 3
Deduplication
This is the mechanism that decides whether adding CAPI helps or doubles your conversions. Both the Pixel and the server event must carry the same event_id — the order or booking reference works best, because both sides can produce it without coordinating. A case difference in the event name alone produces two events even with a matching ID. Read the Deduplicated indicator in Events Manager over a full week, not one session.
- 4
Window and timing
Meta's default attribution is a 7-day click and 1-day view. View-through is included by default, which is a large part of why Meta claims more conversions than your other platforms — that overlap is expected rather than a fault.
- 5
The Meta gotcha
Match quality is where most Meta accounts lose attribution, and it's almost always normalization rather than coverage. An email hashed with a capital letter, or a phone hashed with brackets, produces a perfectly valid hash that matches nobody and errors nowhere. Normalize first, then hash, and read the score per event rather than overall.
Source-of-truth validation
How to prove the chain works
One real journey, followed all the way, then a reconciliation. Neither on its own is enough.
- A live Meta ad clicked, and the identifier confirmed present on the landing URL.
- The same identifier confirmed on the order or opportunity that followed the webinar after a full real journey through every step.
- Purchase confirmed arriving at Meta Ads, verified by the Deduplicated indicator and the per-event match quality score, both read over seven days.
- Your billing or crm record, joined to the webinar attendance log reconciled against Meta Ads per record over a fully closed window.
- The same reconciliation repeated 30 days later.
Straight talk
When this doesn't apply to you
Worth checking before you build anything, because two of these are common and both mean the work isn't worth doing.
- If your webinar is a support or onboarding session for existing customers, there is no acquisition funnel here and nothing to attribute.
- If you're advertising a business type Meta restricts data collection for — health being the obvious one — the parameters you can legitimately send are narrower, and that constraint should shape the build rather than be worked around.
- If your cycle from click to purchase regularly exceeds the import window, the final event can't drive bidding whatever you build. Optimize toward attendance of at least a defined watch duration instead and use the later data for budget decisions rather than for bidding.
- If almost none of your post-webinar orders carry a click identifier today, that's the whole project. Fix capture first — the import is the easy half and no tooling rescues a record with nothing to reference.
What working looks like
Purchase attributed to the click
Server-sideWeeks later if necessary, because the identifier lives on the order or opportunity that followed the webinar rather than in a cookie.
Meta bidding fed the real outcome
8+ EMQVia the Conversions API, so it optimizes toward purchases that followed the webinar rather than toward registrations.
A reconciliation that closes
DedupedYour billing or crm record, joined to the webinar attendance log matched per record against what Meta Ads reports, over a fully closed window.
The implementation, on Meta Ads
Capture fbclid and _fbc on landing
fbclid is appended automatically on ad clicks. Capture it on landing and persist it — if you only ever read the _fbc cookie later, you're depending on a cookie that Safari caps at seven days when it's set through JavaScript.
Persist it to the order or opportunity that followed the webinar
Push the identifier into the registration record as a custom field, then carry it onto the contact so a purchase a week later still resolves without depending on a cookie.
Send purchase from the record
Your billing or CRM system, on the purchase, with the webinar attendance joined on the registrant's email so the campaign that filled the seat gets the credit. Dispatched to Meta Ads through the Conversions API.
Deduplicate and reverse
Deduplication is on event_name and event_id together, so both paths must send the same id and the identically-cased name. Refunds reverse. Webinar-driven purchases are frequently impulse decisions and refund at above-average rates, which is worth measuring rather than assuming.

The honestanswers.
No buzzwords, no upsell. If we don’t know, we say so.
01Should Meta webinar ads optimize for registrations or purchases?
Purchases, if each ad set can produce enough of them per week to exit learning. If not, optimize on a custom conversion for attendees who watched past a set point, not on registrations.
02Do Meta instant forms work for tracking webinar sales?
They work, but there is no click identifier on your site, so the later Purchase matches on hashed email, phone or the form's lead ID. Make sure the email collected is the one the buyer will check out with.
03Why isn't registration enough to optimize on?
Because registration-to-purchase varies by a factor of several across channels, and bidding pointed at registrations reliably finds the channel with the worst rate — it produces the cheapest registrations.
04How does the identifier survive to purchase?
It doesn't, as a cookie — the gap is too long. It has to be written onto the order or opportunity that followed the webinar at the point of ad click, where it lives as a field rather than as browser storage.
05What does Meta Ads need to accept the conversion?
event_name from the standard set with exact casing, event_time in seconds, a shared event_id, an action_source, and hashed user_data that was normalized before hashing. Purchase additionally requires value and currency.
06How long does this take to build?
Two to four days for the implementation, plus a closed reconciliation window before we'd call it verified. Capture and persistence are the fiddly parts; the import itself is usually an afternoon.
07Can I do this myself?
Yes, and the reference pages on this site cover the mechanics. The part that's genuinely tedious rather than clever is keeping fbclid and _fbc alive through multi-step forms and the multi-day gap between the webinar and the purchase, which fails silently at every stage.
