How to track webinar attendance to purchase for Google Ads
The registration is cheap, the attendance is the filter, and the purchase arrives days after the room emptied. Almost every webinar funnel reports the registration, which is the one stage that costs the prospect nothing and predicts the least. On Google Ads the specifics that matter are the click identifier (gclid, gbraid and wbraid), the import mechanism (Google's offline conversion import), and conversion actions deduplicate on their own counting setting rather than an event ID, so the setting matters more here than the payload. The chain only works end to end if the identifier is captured on landing and stored on the order or opportunity that followed the webinar — no cookie survives the gap between ad click and purchase.

Where this funnel usually breaks
Registrations optimized as the conversion
They are cheap and easy, so the platform will find you a great many people who register and never appear. The cost per registration falls and the revenue does not move.
Replay buyers attributed to email
The purchase link comes from a follow-up email, so without a persisted identifier the entire replay cohort shows up as email traffic and the paid campaign that filled the seat gets nothing.
Attendance minutes ignored
Someone who watched four minutes and someone who watched the full pitch are the same attendance record and are not remotely the same prospect.

Webinar sales on Google Ads: import the purchase, not the signup
Create a Google Ads conversion action for the post-webinar purchase and upload it through offline conversion import against the gclid, gbraid or wbraid stored on the registrant's record. Keep registration and qualified attendance as secondary actions so Smart Bidding targets buyers. The upload comes from your billing or CRM system, joined on the registrant's email.
Google traffic to a webinar is mostly search intent: someone typed the problem the session promises to solve. The catch is that the registration form usually sits on the webinar host's page, and auto-tagging only puts the gclid on your own landing URL. Read it there, pass it into the registration as a custom field, and make sure it is copied onto the contact when the webinar platform syncs to your CRM.
Set up three conversion actions. Registration and attendance past your watch threshold go in as secondary actions, visible in reporting but not used for bidding. The purchase is primary, with its real order value. If purchases are only a handful a month, make qualified attendance primary for now instead of registration; it predicts revenue far better and is still frequent enough to learn from. Confirm the primary and secondary split in the account's conversion goals, because imported actions are easy to leave on the wrong setting.
Most webinar purchases land well inside the 90-day import window, so the window is rarely the issue. The usual failure is the replay email: the buyer clicks a link in a follow-up sequence, the email tool tags the visit as email, and nobody joins the order back to the stored gclid. Do that join on email in the CRM, not on the checkout session. Enhanced Conversions for leads can also match on hashed email for registrants whose gclid never reached the form.
Architecture
The exact event sequence
Five stages. Two breaks, not one: the identifier is lost at registration because the form is hosted elsewhere, and then lost again between the webinar and the purchase because days pass and the device changes. The identifier has to survive all of them.
Step 1
Ad click
The identifier arrives on the registration page. Capture it here — the webinar platform will not.
Step 2
Registration
On a webinar platform's hosted form in most cases, which means the identifier has to be pushed in as a field rather than read from the page.
Step 3
Attendance
Registration-to-attendance runs between a third and a half for cold traffic. It is the single largest drop in this funnel.
Step 4
Replay watched
A real stage. Replay buyers are a meaningful share of revenue and are invisible if you only count live attendance.
Step 5
Purchase
Days later, from an email, on a different device. This is the event worth optimizing toward and the hardest one to connect.
Diagnostic sequence
What's specific to Google Ads
The funnel logic above is the same wherever you advertise. These are the parts that change because it's Google Ads.
- 1
Click identifier: gclid, gbraid and wbraid
Three parameters, not one. gclid is the long-standing identifier; gbraid and wbraid arrive on iOS traffic where privacy constraints prevent the usual one. Capture code that names only gclid loses a growing share, silently, and the loss is invisible until you audit how many records carry an identifier.
- 2
Import mechanism: offline conversion import
Uploaded against the click identifier, either through the Google Ads API or as a file. The upload is the easy part; what limits it is how many of your records carry an identifier at all. Verify the current column format against Google's own template — it has changed before.
- 3
Deduplication
There's no shared event ID mechanism like Meta's. What matters instead is the counting setting on each conversion action — 'one' for lead-type conversions so a repeat submitter doesn't count three times, 'every' for ecommerce where a second purchase is a second sale. This is the single most common misconfiguration we find in Google Ads accounts.
- 4
Window and timing
Google's offline import window is 90 days from the click. Anything older can't be matched, and rows outside it fail as unmatched without much explanation. Measure your median click-to-outcome time against that before designing anything.
- 5
The Google Ads gotcha
A conversion action that stops receiving hits is flagged as inactive 30 days later — by which point a month of budget has already run against a missing signal. Check the last-received date on every action monthly; it takes two minutes and it's the cheapest monitoring available.
Source-of-truth validation
How to prove the chain works
One real journey, followed all the way, then a reconciliation. Neither on its own is enough.
- A live Google Ads ad clicked, and the identifier confirmed present on the landing URL.
- The same identifier confirmed on the order or opportunity that followed the webinar after a full real journey through every step.
- Purchase confirmed arriving at Google Ads, verified by the match rate on the upload, not the success message.
- Your billing or crm record, joined to the webinar attendance log reconciled against Google Ads per record over a fully closed window.
- The same reconciliation repeated 30 days later.
Straight talk
When this doesn't apply to you
Worth checking before you build anything, because two of these are common and both mean the work isn't worth doing.
- If your webinar is a support or onboarding session for existing customers, there is no acquisition funnel here and nothing to attribute.
- If you're running Performance Max exclusively and haven't separated your conversion actions, the import will work and the reporting won't tell you much. Worth sorting the account structure first.
- If your cycle from click to purchase regularly exceeds the import window, the final event can't drive bidding whatever you build. Optimize toward attendance of at least a defined watch duration instead and use the later data for budget decisions rather than for bidding.
- If almost none of your post-webinar orders carry a click identifier today, that's the whole project. Fix capture first — the import is the easy half and no tooling rescues a record with nothing to reference.
What working looks like
Purchase attributed to the click
Server-sideWeeks later if necessary, because the identifier lives on the order or opportunity that followed the webinar rather than in a cookie.
Google Ads bidding fed the real outcome
8+ EMQVia offline conversion import, so it optimizes toward purchases that followed the webinar rather than toward registrations.
A reconciliation that closes
DedupedYour billing or crm record, joined to the webinar attendance log matched per record against what Google Ads reports, over a fully closed window.
The implementation, on Google Ads
Capture gclid, gbraid and wbraid on landing
Auto-tagging appends the identifier. Confirm it's enabled in every account — it gets switched off for cleaner analytics URLs more often than you'd expect, and that single setting removes conversion attribution, Enhanced Conversions and offline import in one go.
Persist it to the order or opportunity that followed the webinar
Push the identifier into the registration record as a custom field, then carry it onto the contact so a purchase a week later still resolves without depending on a cookie.
Send purchase from the record
Your billing or CRM system, on the purchase, with the webinar attendance joined on the registrant's email so the campaign that filled the seat gets the credit. Dispatched to Google Ads through Google's offline conversion import.
Deduplicate and reverse
Conversion actions deduplicate on their own counting setting rather than an event id, so the setting matters more here than the payload. Refunds reverse. Webinar-driven purchases are frequently impulse decisions and refund at above-average rates, which is worth measuring rather than assuming.

The honestanswers.
No buzzwords, no upsell. If we don’t know, we say so.
01Should webinar registrations count as a conversion in Google Ads?
Count them, but as a secondary action that does not drive bidding. Make the purchase the primary action, or qualified attendance while purchases are too few.
02Can replay purchases be sent to Google Ads?
Yes, provided the gclid was stored on the registrant at signup. The replay buyer's order is uploaded against that stored identifier, whichever email link they clicked to buy.
03Why isn't registration enough to optimize on?
Because registration-to-purchase varies by a factor of several across channels, and bidding pointed at registrations reliably finds the channel with the worst rate — it produces the cheapest registrations.
04How does the identifier survive to purchase?
It doesn't, as a cookie — the gap is too long. It has to be written onto the order or opportunity that followed the webinar at the point of ad click, where it lives as a field rather than as browser storage.
05What does Google Ads need to accept the conversion?
A click identifier inside the 90-day window, a conversion action name that matches one configured in the account, a conversion timestamp for when the outcome happened, and a value. Read the match rate after uploading — a file can upload perfectly and match nothing.
06How long does this take to build?
Two to four days for the implementation, plus a closed reconciliation window before we'd call it verified. Capture and persistence are the fiddly parts; the import itself is usually an afternoon.
07Can I do this myself?
Yes, and the reference pages on this site cover the mechanics. The part that's genuinely tedious rather than clever is keeping gclid, gbraid and wbraid alive through multi-step forms and the multi-day gap between the webinar and the purchase, which fails silently at every stage.
