How to track webinar attendance to purchase for Amazon Ads

The registration is cheap, the attendance is the filter, and the purchase arrives days after the room emptied. Almost every webinar funnel reports the registration, which is the one stage that costs the prospect nothing and predicts the least. On Amazon Ads the specifics that matter are the click identifier (no click identifier for on-Amazon conversions), the import mechanism (the Amazon Ads conversion API, for off-Amazon destinations only), and Deduplication only arises for off-Amazon conversions where both a tag and a server event exist. The chain only works end to end if the identifier is captured on landing and stored on the order or opportunity that followed the webinar — no cookie survives the gap between ad click and purchase.

The problem

Where this funnel usually breaks

Amazon Ads · Webinar → purchase-specific issues
Leak #01

Registrations optimized as the conversion

They are cheap and easy, so the platform will find you a great many people who register and never appear. The cost per registration falls and the revenue does not move.

Leak #02

Replay buyers attributed to email

The purchase link comes from a follow-up email, so without a persisted identifier the entire replay cohort shows up as email traffic and the paid campaign that filled the seat gets nothing.

Leak #03

Attendance minutes ignored

Someone who watched four minutes and someone who watched the full pitch are the same attendance record and are not remotely the same prospect.

Amazon Ads for webinars: only DSP can send anyone to the session

Webinar purchases can only be tracked on Amazon Ads when Amazon DSP sends traffic to your own registration page; sponsored ad formats point at Amazon listings and cannot promote a webinar. With DSP, store any click identifier on the registrant and send the later order from your billing or CRM system through Amazon's conversion API, once your account confirms support.

Sponsored Products, Sponsored Brands and similar formats send shoppers to a product listing or a store page inside Amazon. A webinar is not an Amazon listing, so those formats cannot promote one, and there is no webinar funnel to track on them. Only Amazon DSP can show someone an ad and send them to your own registration page.

DSP is display and video bought on audiences Amazon builds from shopping behavior. That suits a webinar tied to something people buy on Amazon, such as a brand teaching customers to get more out of its equipment, and not much else. Registrants from display are lower intent than search traffic, so attendance and the eventual purchase will look weak next to Google unless the audience is chosen with care.

If you test it, keep the setup minimal: Amazon's tag on the registration page, any click identifier the DSP landing URL carries saved to the registrant, and the post-webinar order sent from your billing system through Amazon's conversion API where your account supports it. Check the attribution window for the specific DSP line, because view-based credit on display will make the channel look better than a purchase join would.

Architecture

The exact event sequence

Five stages. Two breaks, not one: the identifier is lost at registration because the form is hosted elsewhere, and then lost again between the webinar and the purchase because days pass and the device changes. The identifier has to survive all of them.

  1. Step 1

    Ad click

The identifier arrives on the registration page. Capture it here — the webinar platform will not.

  2. Step 2

    Registration

On a webinar platform's hosted form in most cases, which means the identifier has to be pushed in as a field rather than read from the page.

  3. Step 3

    Attendance

Registration-to-attendance runs between a third and a half for cold traffic. It is the single largest drop in this funnel.

  4. Step 4

    Replay watched

A real stage. Replay buyers are a meaningful share of revenue and are invisible if you only count live attendance.

  5. Step 5

    Purchase

Days later, from an email, on a different device. This is the event worth optimizing toward and the hardest one to connect.

Diagnostic sequence

What's specific to Amazon Ads

The funnel logic above is the same wherever you advertise. These are the parts that change because it's Amazon Ads.

  1. 1

Click identifier: no click identifier for on-Amazon conversions

This is the important thing and most guidance skips it: Amazon Ads spans two very different situations. Sponsored ad formats driving to an Amazon listing produce conversions Amazon measures itself, with no click identifier passed to you and no per-order join available. Amazon DSP driving to your own site is a different case, where a click identifier can reach your landing page and be captured like any other network's.

  2. 2

Import mechanism: conversion upload, where applicable

Where you are driving to your own site, conversions can be sent back. Where you are driving to an Amazon listing, the transaction happens inside Amazon's checkout and there is nothing to send — Amazon's own attribution reporting is the only view available and it is aggregated.

  3. 3

    Deduplication

For on-Amazon purchases the question does not apply, because you are not measuring the conversion at all — Amazon is. For traffic to your own site the usual shared-identifier pattern applies.

  4. 4

    Window and timing

Amazon's attribution windows differ by ad product and by whether the conversion happens on Amazon or on your site. Establish which product and which destination you are reporting on before comparing any figure.

  5. 5

    The Amazon Ads gotcha

The structural limit is worth stating plainly to anyone selling you on this: for sales that complete inside Amazon, per-order click attribution does not exist and cannot be built. Amazon Attribution gives aggregated, delayed reporting. Anyone offering per-order joins on Amazon-completed sales is describing something that is not available.

Source-of-truth validation

How to prove the chain works

One real journey, followed all the way, then a reconciliation. Neither on its own is enough.

Source of truthyour billing or CRM record, joined to the webinar attendance log
  • A live Amazon Ads ad clicked, and the identifier confirmed present on the landing URL.
  • The same identifier confirmed on the order or opportunity that followed the webinar after a full real journey through every step.
  • Purchase confirmed arriving at Amazon Ads, verified by Amazon's own attribution reporting for on-Amazon sales, and your normal reconciliation for off-Amazon conversions.
  • Your billing or crm record, joined to the webinar attendance log reconciled against Amazon Ads per record over a fully closed window.
  • The same reconciliation repeated 30 days later.

Straight talk

When this doesn't apply to you

Worth checking before you build anything, because two of these are common and both mean the work isn't worth doing.

  • If your webinar is a support or onboarding session for existing customers, there is no acquisition funnel here and nothing to attribute.
  • If all your Amazon Ads spend drives to Amazon listings, there is no conversion tracking build here — only a reporting exercise inside Amazon's own tools, and it is worth knowing that before commissioning anything.
  • If your cycle from click to purchase regularly exceeds the import window, the final event can't drive bidding whatever you build. Optimize toward attendance of at least a defined watch duration instead and use the later data for budget decisions rather than for bidding.
  • If almost none of your post-webinar orders carry a click identifier today, that's the whole project. Fix capture first — the import is the easy half and no tooling rescues a record with nothing to reference.

What you get

The implementation, on Amazon Ads

Item 01

Capture the Amazon click identifier, where one exists on landing

For off-Amazon destinations, capture and persist the click identifier as with any network. For on-Amazon destinations there is nothing to capture.

Item 02

Persist it to the order or opportunity that followed the webinar

Push the identifier into the registration record as a custom field, then carry it onto the contact so a purchase a week later still resolves without depending on a cookie.

Item 03

Send purchase from the record

Your billing or CRM system, on the purchase, with the webinar attendance joined on the registrant's email so the campaign that filled the seat gets the credit. Dispatched to Amazon Ads through the Amazon Ads conversion API, for off-Amazon destinations only.

Item 04

Deduplicate and reverse

Deduplication only arises for off-amazon conversions where both a tag and a server event exist. Refunds reverse. Webinar-driven purchases are frequently impulse decisions and refund at above-average rates, which is worth measuring rather than assuming.

Got questions?

The honestanswers.

No buzzwords, no upsell. If we don’t know, we say so.

01Can Sponsored Products promote a webinar?

No. Sponsored formats send shoppers to Amazon listings or store pages, so an off-Amazon registration page is out of reach. Amazon DSP is the only route.

02Is Amazon DSP worth testing for webinar registrations?

Only when the webinar is tied to something your audience buys on Amazon. For most webinars, search, LinkedIn or Meta reach better-qualified registrants.

03Why isn't registration enough to optimize on?

Because registration-to-purchase varies by a factor of several across channels, and bidding pointed at registrations reliably finds the channel with the worst rate — it produces the cheapest registrations.

04How does the identifier survive to purchase?

It doesn't, as a cookie — the gap is too long. It has to be written onto the order or opportunity that followed the webinar at the point of ad click, where it lives as a field rather than as browser storage.

05What does Amazon Ads need to accept the conversion?

For off-Amazon conversions: an event, a timestamp, a value and the click identifier. For on-Amazon conversions: nothing, because the measurement is not yours to do.

06How long does this take to build?

Two to four days for the implementation, plus a closed reconciliation window before we'd call it verified. Capture and persistence are the fiddly parts; the import itself is usually an afternoon.

07Can I do this myself?

Yes, and the reference pages on this site cover the mechanics. The part that's genuinely tedious rather than clever is keeping the Amazon click identifier, where one exists alive through multi-step forms and the multi-day gap between the webinar and the purchase, which fails silently at every stage.
