Google Ads counts consultation calls. LawPay knows which callers paid a retainer.
A prospective client clicks your ad, calls or fills out your consultation form, then pays days later on your LawPay payment page from a website button, Quick Bill or QR code. That page belongs to LawPay, so Google Ads and Meta never see the payment. We match each first retainer to the click that started the matter, so bidding learns which campaigns produce paying clients.

LawPay · what breaks
What goes wrong when clients pay through LawPay
- 01
"Google counts consultation requests. Only LawPay knows who signed."
The retainer is paid on LawPay's hosted page days after the click, so neither platform learns which keyword brought in a paying client. An estate planning firm can't tell flat-fee trust clients from people who wanted a free answer.
- 02
"Our payment button sends people somewhere our tracking can't follow"
The website button is a linked image pointing at your payment page. LawPay's documented page settings offer no slot for a conversion tag or thank-you redirect, so GA4 sees the click out and nothing after.
- 03
A monthly payment plan that looks like a new client every month
Scheduled Payments can recharge a family law or DUI client weekly or monthly. Push every charge to the ad platforms and one client becomes a new acquisition each installment.
- 04
An eCheck that counts, then bounces
LawPay says an eCheck can be returned up to 60 days after authorization. A conversion already sent stays counted unless something reverses it, so bidding chases money that never cleared.
LawPay · the fix
What changes — LawPay
Bidding learns from retained clients
The first LawPay payment on a new matter reaches Google Ads and Meta as the primary conversion, at the real retainer amount.
One conversion per client, not per charge
Installments, Card Vault recharges and later invoices stay in lifetime-value reporting, out of acquisition.
Returns, voids and refunds taken back
A failed eCheck, void or refund adjusts the original conversion.
LawPay · architecture
What LawPay actually lets you hook into
From LawPay's support center, integrations directory and the 8am developer portal. Anything they don't spell out, we confirm on your account.
- 1
Hosted payment page with a reference field
Payment links, QR codes and the website button all lead here. The reference field can be relabeled as a case number and set to required, optional or hidden. It's the bridge to your intake record.
- 2
Zapier Webhook Event trigger
LawPay's Zapier app triggers on new webhook events and formats transaction amounts from cents. We confirm which events your account emits first.
- 3
8am developer platform
Documents charges that carry a reference and hosted payment fields for checkout on your own site, via partner OAuth or a merchant secret key. Overkill for most firms.
- 4
Practice-management and intake connections
65+ listed, including MyCase, Clio, Smokeball, PracticePanther, Law Ruler, Acuity Scheduling and LawTap: where the click ID and matter number can sit together.
- 5
No ad-platform connection
No Google Ads, GA4 or Meta integration is listed, so every conversion those platforms get from LawPay is one we build.
LawPay · diagnose
Where LawPay tracking breaks, in the order we check
Most firms have the payment data and the click data. They just live in two systems that never meet.
- 01
Is the click ID saved at intake?
If your form or call tracking doesn't store GCLID and fbclid on the lead, nothing downstream recovers it.
- 02
Is the reference field hidden or free text?
A hidden field, or one clients fill with "retainer", gives us nothing to match.
- 03
Which page and account take new-client money?
LawPay titles trust pages "Trust Payment" and operating pages "Invoice Payment" by default, so consult fees, trust retainers and invoices can land on different pages. Each needs its own role in the event map.
- 04
What is already being sent?
Look for Zaps pushing every charge, Scheduled Payments included, as a new conversion.
- 05
Are failed eChecks and refunds reversed?
Compare LawPay returns and refunds with conversions still standing in each platform.
LawPay · prove
The QA evidence — LawPay
Run on a real payment through your live LawPay page, started from an ad-tagged visit.
Source of truth
LawPay Transactions report (exported to CSV or Excel): first payments from new clients by date, deposit account and amount, checked against Monthly Deposits. We confirm your export carries the reference value before relying on it.
- One test payment from an ad-tagged visit, with the click ID on the matter and the matter number in the LawPay reference field.
- Exactly one Google Ads conversion and one Meta conversion for that payment, with a shared event ID for Meta deduplication.
- A Scheduled Payment occurrence confirmed absent from acquisition.
- A voided or refunded test charge adjusted at each destination.
- First retainers matched to ad conversions over a closed month, then rechecked 30 days later.

LawPay · when not to buy
When you don't need this on LawPay
LawPay is in a lot of firms that shouldn't pay us to track it.
- Contingency-fee personal injury, workers' comp or Social Security disability firms rarely take upfront LawPay payments. Track the signed case in intake software instead.
- If LawPay only collects on existing clients' invoices, track the signed fee agreement, not the payment.
- If new matters come only from referrals and bar listings, with no paid search or Facebook spend, there's no bidding for LawPay data to teach.
- If your practice software already passes the click ID and logs the first payment against the matter, a settings review may be enough, and we'll say so.
LawPay · what we deliver
The event map on LawPay
Consultation request or call
Leading signal. GCLID, fbclid and UTMs are captured at first contact and stored on the lead in your intake or practice tool, such as MyCase, Clio or Law Ruler.
Paid consultation fee
Where the first meeting is paid, through a LawPay link or a scheduler listed among LawPay's integrations such as Acuity Scheduling, sent as a secondary conversion once we confirm the payment can be tied back to the lead.
Retainer requested
A Quick Bill, invoice or DocuSign payment link for a new matter. Reporting only.
First retainer paid
The primary conversion, valued from the LawPay transaction and matched through the matter number in the reference field. Pay Later counts once at full amount, since Affirm pays the firm 100% up front.
Installments, recharges and later invoices
Scheduled Payments, Card Vault charges and ongoing billing on criminal defense or immigration matters, excluded from acquisition.
eCheck return, void, refund or chargeback
Reverses or reduces the first-payment conversion. Cash and checks you mark paid by hand never go to ad platforms.
Written guarantee
95%+ tracking accuracy
Measured against LawPay Transactions report (exported to CSV or Excel): first payments from new clients by date, deposit account and amount, checked against Monthly Deposits. We confirm your export carries the reference value before relying on it.. Miss it and we keep working at no cost.

FAQ
LawPay questions, answered
No. LawPay's help center documents payment page settings for the reference field, title, notes and contact details, with no script or redirect option. The conversion has to come from LawPay's transaction data, sent server-side.
No ad platform appears in LawPay's integrations directory. The route is its Zapier Webhook Event trigger or the Transactions report, feeding Google Ads offline conversions and Meta's Conversions API.
The click ID is saved at first contact, and the same matter number goes into LawPay's reference field at payment. Joining the two ties the retainer to the click.
Once, at the full amount. LawPay says Affirm pays the firm 100% and handles the client's installments, for transactions between $150 and $30,000.
No. Only the first payment on a new matter counts; Scheduled Payments and recharges stay in lifetime-value reporting.
