How to track checkout to purchase for Reddit Ads

Everything between checkout starting and the order existing is where ecommerce tracking actually fails, and it fails differently depending on how your checkout is built. A hosted payment page is a different domain. A wallet payment can complete without the customer ever seeing the confirmation. Both produce orders in your store that no platform ever hears about. On Reddit Ads the specifics that matter are the click identifier (the rdt_cid click identifier), the import mechanism (the Reddit Conversions API), and Reddit deduplicates on the conversion ID carried on both the pixel event and the server event. The chain only works end to end if the identifier is captured on landing and stored on the order record in your store — no cookie survives the gap between checkout started and purchase sent with the order id.

The problem

Where this funnel usually breaks

Reddit · Checkout → purchase-specific issues
Leak #01

Wallet payments skip the confirmation page

Shop Pay and PayPal can be abandoned after the money moves. The order is real; the page view never happened.

Leak #02

A hosted payment page on another domain

Session splits, the click identifier doesn't cross, and the purchase gets credited to your own site as a referral.

Leak #03

Every payment method assumed to behave the same

Card, wallet and redirect gateways each return differently, and the untested one is where the missing conversions are.

Architecture

The exact event sequence

Five stages. Stage three is the one you often can't instrument, which is precisely why stage four has to be the source. The identifier has to survive all of them.

  1. Step 1

    Checkout started

Browser-side, with value. The last point you reliably control the page.

  2. Step 2

    Payment info submitted

Worth splitting out — it turns one opaque step into a diagnosable one.

  3. Step 3

    Payment authorised

Often on someone else's domain, and frequently invisible to your tags entirely.

  4. Step 4

    Order created

From the order webhook. This is the only step that sees every order regardless of how payment happened.

  5. Step 5

Purchase sent with the order ID

Deduplicated on that ID, with refunds wired to reverse.

Diagnostic sequence

What's specific to Reddit Ads

The funnel logic above is the same wherever you advertise. These are the parts that change because it's Reddit Ads.

  1. 1

Click identifier: the rdt_cid click identifier

Reddit appends rdt_cid to your landing page URL, and the Reddit Pixel keeps its own identifier in the _rdt_uuid cookie. Reddit's audience is unusually privacy-aware — ad-blocker and tracker-blocker usage on Reddit traffic runs well above the web average — so the share of visits where the pixel never loads at all is higher here than on any other network in this list. The URL parameter is the identifier that survives; the cookie often does not.

  2. 2

    Import mechanism: the Conversions API

Server events posted to Reddit's Conversions API with the click identifier and hashed customer information. Reddit's implementation is younger than Meta's and its documentation moves — confirm the current endpoint, event names and required fields against Reddit's own developer docs rather than an integration blog post.

  3. 3

    Deduplication

The pixel and the Conversions API event must carry the same conversion identifier for the same action. Because so much Reddit traffic never runs the pixel at all, a lot of accounts skip the pixel entirely and send server-side only — which is a legitimate choice here in a way it rarely is elsewhere, and it removes the deduplication problem completely. Decide deliberately rather than running both and hoping.

  4. 4

    Window and timing

Reddit's default attribution windows are shorter than Meta's and are configurable. Check what your account is set to before reconciling anything, and verify the accepted event-freshness limit for server events against Reddit's current documentation.

  5. 5

    The Reddit gotcha

Reddit converts on a delay and on trust. People read a thread, leave, think about it, and come back through a branded search a week later — which is a genuine Reddit-driven conversion that Reddit will never be credited for and Google will happily claim. If Reddit is judged purely on last-click inside its own window, it will always look worse than it is. Build the measurement, then argue about attribution with that context on the table.

Source-of-truth validation

How to prove the chain works

One real journey, followed all the way, then a reconciliation. Neither on its own is enough.

Source of truthyour store's order records, web orders only
  • A live Reddit ad clicked, and the identifier confirmed present on the landing URL.
  • The same identifier confirmed on the order record in your store after a full real journey through every step.
  • Purchase sent with the order ID confirmed arriving at Reddit Ads, verified by the events received and matched in Reddit Ads Manager, reconciled against your own records.
  • Your store's order records, web orders only reconciled against Reddit Ads per record over a fully closed window.
  • The same reconciliation repeated 30 days later.

Straight talk

When this doesn't apply to you

Worth checking before you build anything, because two of these are common and both mean the work isn't worth doing.

  • If your checkout is entirely on your own domain with no wallet options and a confirmation page every customer reaches, the browser-side event may genuinely be sufficient — reconcile a closed week and find out before building anything.
  • If you are not running Reddit at meaningful spend, skip it. And if your Reddit strategy is organic community presence rather than ads, none of this applies — that traffic has no click identifier by definition.
  • If your cycle from click to purchase sent with the order id regularly exceeds the import window, the final event can't drive bidding whatever you build. Optimize toward payment info submitted instead and use the later data for budget decisions rather than for bidding.
  • If almost none of your orders carry a click identifier today, that's the whole project. Fix capture first — the import is the easy half and no tooling rescues a record with nothing to reference.

Who this is for

Honest about who we’re a fit for.

We don’t take every project. Here’s how to tell if we’re right for you.

Good fit

You’re a great fit if…

  • You run Reddit · Checkout → purchase (or are migrating to it)
  • You spend $5K+/month on paid ads (Meta, Google, TikTok, Microsoft, LinkedIn)
  • Your reported ROAS doesn’t match what your bank account is saying
  • You want to own your tracking stack — no monthly SaaS fees forever
  • You have 2–4 days to do this once and never think about it again
Not a fit

Skip us if…

  • You spend less than $500/month on paid ads (browser pixel is fine)
  • You want a SaaS dashboard with monthly fees forever (Triple Whale, Hyros)
  • You need attribution modeling — we fix the data foundation, not multi-touch reports
  • You want a 6-month enterprise consulting engagement (we ship in 4 days)
  • You expect us to manage your ad accounts (we don’t — that’s a different service)

If you’re still unsure, book the call anyway— we’ll tell you straight whether we can help.

What you get

The implementation, on Reddit Ads

Item 01

Capture the rdt_cid click identifier on landing

Read rdt_cid from the landing URL and persist it server-side on first sight. Do not build on the pixel's cookie — on this audience specifically, assuming the pixel ran is the mistake.

Item 02

Persist it to the order record in your store

Set a first-party cookie server-side before the hop, and pass the identifier into the payment domain where the provider supports it — where it doesn't, the order record is the only path.

Item 03

Send purchase sent with the order id from the record

The order webhook fires once per order, independent of which payment path the customer took or whether they ever saw a confirmation page. Dispatched to Reddit Ads through the Reddit Conversions API.

Item 04

Deduplicate and reverse

Reddit deduplicates on the conversion id carried on both the pixel event and the server event. Refunds reverse from the refund webhook; failed and cancelled orders should never have counted in the first place.

Got questions?

The honestanswers.

No buzzwords, no upsell. If we don’t know, we say so.

01Why isn't payment info submitted enough to optimize on?

Because checkout starts are plentiful and the completion rate varies hugely by channel and device. Optimizing on starts buys traffic that begins checkouts and abandons them.

02How does the identifier survive to purchase sent with the order id?

It doesn't, as a cookie — the gap is too long. It has to be written onto the order record in your store at the point of checkout started, where it lives as a field rather than as browser storage.

03What does Reddit Ads need to accept the conversion?

An event name Reddit recognizes, a conversion identifier matched to the pixel if you are also running one, a timestamp, hashed customer information, and the click identifier where you have it.

04How long does this take to build?

Two to four days for the implementation, plus a closed reconciliation window before we'd call it verified. Capture and persistence are the fiddly parts; the import itself is usually an afternoon.

05Can I do this myself?

Yes, and the reference pages on this site cover the mechanics. The part that's genuinely tedious rather than clever is keeping the rdt_cid click identifier alive through multi-step forms and the hop to a hosted payment domain, which fails silently at every stage.
