X Ads · Checkout → purchase · Conversion tracking

How to track checkout to purchase for X Ads

Everything between checkout starting and the order existing is where ecommerce tracking actually fails, and it fails differently depending on how your checkout is built. A hosted payment page is a different domain. A wallet payment can complete without the customer ever seeing the confirmation. Both produce orders in your store that no platform ever hears about. On X Ads the specifics that matter are the click identifier (the twclid click identifier), the import mechanism (the X Conversions API), and X deduplicates on a conversion identifier shared between the website tag and the server event. The chain only works end to end if the identifier is captured on landing and stored on the order record in your store — no cookie survives the gap between checkout started and purchase sent with the order id.

The problem

Where this funnel usually breaks

X Ads · Checkout → purchase-specific issues
Leak #01

Wallet payments skip the confirmation page

Shop Pay and PayPal can be abandoned after the money moves. The order is real; the page view never happened.

Leak #02

A hosted payment page on another domain

Session splits, the click identifier doesn't cross, and the purchase gets credited to your own site as a referral.

Leak #03

Every payment method assumed to behave the same

Card, wallet and redirect gateways each return differently, and the untested one is where the missing conversions are.

Specific to X Ads × Checkout → purchase

X Ads: purchase from the order record, re-tested after changes

On X, send the purchase through the X Conversions API from the order webhook, with the twclid saved on the cart at checkout start, hashed email and the order ID as the shared conversion identifier. Track checkout started in your own analytics unless X volume justifies a separate event, and re-test after X tooling changes.

X traffic is mostly mobile, arriving in the X app's in-app browser, and the checkout-to-purchase break is the same hop seen elsewhere: payment leaves the browser, returns somewhere else, and the X tag on the confirmation page never fires. What makes X different is how little you can lean on old setup guides. Checkout tracking built a year ago may be pointing at an event configuration X no longer uses in the same way.

Keep it simple. Save twclid onto the cart at checkout start, send the purchase from the order record with value, and if the X tag also fires a purchase, give both the order ID as the conversion identifier. Then prove it on a real order: click an X ad on a phone, pay with a wallet, and confirm the purchase appears once in X Ads Manager.

Unless X sends checkout volume you'd actually bid on, don't spend effort on a separate checkout-start conversion in X. Track it in your own analytics, where you can see whether X shoppers abandon at payment at a different rate from your other traffic, which is the only question that event would answer.

Architecture

The exact event sequence

Five stages. Stage three is the one you often can't instrument, which is precisely why stage four has to be the source. The identifier has to survive all of them.

  1. Step 1

    Checkout started

Browser-side, with value. The last point you reliably control the page.

  2. Step 2

    Payment info submitted

Worth splitting out — it turns one opaque step into a diagnosable one.

  3. Step 3

    Payment authorised

Often on someone else's domain, and frequently invisible to your tags entirely.

  4. Step 4

    Order created

From the order webhook. This is the only step that sees every order regardless of how payment happened.

  5. Step 5

Purchase sent with the order ID

Deduplicated on that ID, with refunds wired to reverse.

Diagnostic sequence

What's specific to X Ads

The funnel logic above is the same wherever you advertise. These are the parts that change because it's X Ads.

  1. 1

Click identifier: the twclid click identifier

X appends twclid to your landing page URL. The platform's advertising stack has changed substantially and repeatedly, so treat any documentation older than a few months as unreliable and verify parameter names and endpoints directly before building.

  2. 2

    Import mechanism: the Conversions API

Server events posted with the click identifier and hashed customer information. This is the least stable API surface of the platforms covered here — confirm the current specification against X's own developer documentation, and expect it to have moved since anyone last wrote about it.

  3. 3

    Deduplication

The pattern is familiar — the tag and the server event must agree on an identifier for the same conversion — but the implementation details have changed more than once. Test deduplication on a real conversion rather than assuming the configuration is correct.

  4. 4

    Window and timing

X's attribution windows are configurable per conversion. Confirm the setting in your account before comparing any number, and verify the accepted event-freshness limit against current documentation.

  5. 5

    The X Ads gotcha

The platform's ad products and APIs have been rebuilt repeatedly, which means integration guidance ages faster here than anywhere else in this library. Anything you build should be re-verified periodically rather than assumed stable.

Source-of-truth validation

How to prove the chain works

One real journey, followed all the way, then a reconciliation. Neither on its own is enough.

Source of truthyour store's order records, web orders only
  • A live X Ads ad clicked, and the identifier confirmed present on the landing URL.
  • The same identifier confirmed on the order record in your store after a full real journey through every step.
  • Purchase sent with the order ID confirmed arriving at X Ads, verified by the conversion reporting inside X Ads Manager, reconciled against your own records.
  • Your store's order records, web orders only reconciled against X Ads per record over a fully closed window.
  • The same reconciliation repeated 30 days later.

Straight talk

When this doesn't apply to you

Worth checking before you build anything, because two of these are common and both mean the work isn't worth doing.

  • If your checkout is entirely on your own domain with no wallet options and a confirmation page every customer reaches, the browser-side event may genuinely be sufficient — reconcile a closed week and find out before building anything.
  • If X is a small experimental line on your plan, the integration effort is hard to justify against a platform whose API has moved this often.
  • If your cycle from click to purchase sent with the order id regularly exceeds the import window, the final event can't drive bidding whatever you build. Optimize toward payment info submitted instead and use the later data for budget decisions rather than for bidding.
  • If almost none of your orders carry a click identifier today, that's the whole project. Fix capture first — the import is the easy half and no tooling rescues a record with nothing to reference.
The outcome

What you get

The implementation, on X Ads

Item 01

Capture the twclid click identifier on landing

Read twclid from the landing URL and persist it server-side immediately, as with every other network.

Item 02

Persist it to the order record in your store

Set a first-party cookie server-side before the hop, and pass the identifier into the payment domain where the provider supports it — where it doesn't, the order record is the only path.

Item 03

Send purchase sent with the order id from the record

The order webhook fires once per order, independent of which payment path the customer took or whether they ever saw a confirmation page. Dispatched to X Ads through the X Conversions API.

Item 04

Deduplicate and reverse

X deduplicates on a conversion identifier shared between the website tag and the server event. Refunds reverse from the refund webhook; failed and cancelled orders should never have counted in the first place.

Got questions?

The honestanswers.

No buzzwords, no upsell. If we don’t know, we say so.

01Why are my X purchase conversions missing after a checkout change?

Often the confirmation page tag stopped firing, or X's event setup changed. Send the purchase from the order record and re-test with a real order.

02Do I need a checkout-started conversion in X Ads?

Rarely. Track it in your own analytics unless X drives enough checkout volume to optimize on.

03Why isn't payment info submitted enough to optimize on?

Because checkout starts are plentiful and the completion rate varies hugely by channel and device. Optimizing on starts buys traffic that begins checkouts and abandons them.

04How does the identifier survive to purchase sent with the order id?

It doesn't, as a cookie — the gap is too long. It has to be written onto the order record in your store at the point of checkout started, where it lives as a field rather than as browser storage.

05What does X Ads need to accept the conversion?

An event name X recognizes, a conversion identifier matched to the tag if you run one, a timestamp, hashed customer information, and the click identifier.

06How long does this take to build?

Two to four days for the implementation, plus a closed reconciliation window before we'd call it verified. Capture and persistence are the fiddly parts; the import itself is usually an afternoon.

07Can I do this myself?

Yes, and the reference pages on this site cover the mechanics. The part that's genuinely tedious rather than clever is keeping the twclid click identifier alive through multi-step forms and the hop to a hosted payment domain, which fails silently at every stage.
