How to track checkout to purchase for Amazon Ads

Everything between checkout starting and the order existing is where ecommerce tracking actually fails, and it fails differently depending on how your checkout is built. A hosted payment page is a different domain. A wallet payment can complete without the customer ever seeing the confirmation. Both produce orders in your store that no platform ever hears about. On Amazon Ads the specifics that matter are the click identifier (no click identifier for on-Amazon conversions), the import mechanism (the Amazon Ads conversion API, for off-Amazon destinations only), and Deduplication only arises for off-Amazon conversions where both a tag and a server event exist. The chain only works end to end if the identifier is captured on landing and stored on the order record in your store — no cookie survives the gap between checkout started and purchase sent with the order id.

Every figure above is either a commitment we put in writing or a countable fact. What your own setup is losing is not on this list, because we haven’t measured it yet — that happens on the call, against your own order records.

The problem

Where this funnel usually breaks

Amazon Ads · Checkout → purchase-specific issues
Leak #01

Wallet payments skip the confirmation page

Shop Pay and PayPal can be abandoned after the money moves. The order is real; the page view never happened.

Leak #02

A hosted payment page on another domain

Session splits, the click identifier doesn't cross, and the purchase gets credited to your own site as a referral.

Leak #03

Every payment method assumed to behave the same

Card, wallet and redirect gateways each return differently, and the untested one is where the missing conversions are.

Architecture

The exact event sequence

Five stages. Stage three is the one you often can't instrument, which is precisely why stage four has to be the source. The identifier has to survive all of them.

  1. Step 1

    Checkout started

Browser-side, with value. The last point you reliably control the page.

  2. Step 2

    Payment info submitted

Worth splitting out — it turns one opaque step into a diagnosable one.

  3. Step 3

    Payment authorised

Often on someone else's domain, and frequently invisible to your tags entirely.

  4. Step 4

    Order created

From the order webhook. This is the only step that sees every order regardless of how payment happened.

  5. Step 5

Purchase sent with the order ID

Deduplicated on that ID, with refunds wired to reverse.

Diagnostic sequence

What's specific to Amazon Ads

The funnel logic above is the same wherever you advertise. These are the parts that change because it's Amazon Ads.

  1. 1

Click identifier: no click identifier for on-Amazon conversions

This is the important thing and most guidance skips it: Amazon Ads spans two very different situations. Sponsored ad formats driving to an Amazon listing produce conversions Amazon measures itself, with no click identifier passed to you and no per-order join available. Amazon DSP driving to your own site is a different case, where a click identifier can reach your landing page and be captured like any other network's.

  2. 2

Import mechanism: conversion upload, where applicable

Where you are driving to your own site, conversions can be sent back. Where you are driving to an Amazon listing, the transaction happens inside Amazon's checkout and there is nothing to send — Amazon's own attribution reporting is the only view available and it is aggregated.

  3. 3

    Deduplication

For on-Amazon purchases the question does not apply, because you are not measuring the conversion at all — Amazon is. For traffic to your own site the usual shared-identifier pattern applies.

  4. 4

    Window and timing

Amazon's attribution windows differ by ad product and by whether the conversion happens on Amazon or on your site. Establish which product and which destination you are reporting on before comparing any figure.

  5. 5

    The Amazon Ads gotcha

The structural limit is worth stating plainly to anyone selling you on this: for sales that complete inside Amazon, per-order click attribution does not exist and cannot be built. Amazon Attribution gives aggregated, delayed reporting. Anyone offering per-order joins on Amazon-completed sales is describing something that is not available.

Source-of-truth validation

How to prove the chain works

One real journey, followed all the way, then a reconciliation. Neither on its own is enough.

Source of truthyour store's order records, web orders only
  • A live Amazon Ads ad clicked, and the identifier confirmed present on the landing URL.
  • The same identifier confirmed on the order record in your store after a full real journey through every step.
  • Purchase sent with the order ID confirmed arriving at Amazon Ads, verified by Amazon's own attribution reporting for on-Amazon sales, and your normal reconciliation for off-Amazon conversions.
  • Your store's order records, web orders only reconciled against Amazon Ads per record over a fully closed window.
  • The same reconciliation repeated 30 days later.

Straight talk

When this doesn't apply to you

Worth checking before you build anything, because two of these are common and both mean the work isn't worth doing.

  • If your checkout is entirely on your own domain with no wallet options and a confirmation page every customer reaches, the browser-side event may genuinely be sufficient — reconcile a closed week and find out before building anything.
  • If all your Amazon Ads spend drives to Amazon listings, there is no conversion tracking build here — only a reporting exercise inside Amazon's own tools, and it is worth knowing that before commissioning anything.
  • If your cycle from click to purchase sent with the order id regularly exceeds the import window, the final event can't drive bidding whatever you build. Optimize toward payment info submitted instead and use the later data for budget decisions rather than for bidding.
  • If almost none of your orders carry a click identifier today, that's the whole project. Fix capture first — the import is the easy half and no tooling rescues a record with nothing to reference.

Who this is for

Honest about who we’re a fit for.

We don’t take every project. Here’s how to tell if we’re right for you.

Good fit

You’re a great fit if…

  • You run Amazon Ads · Checkout → purchase (or are migrating to it)
  • You spend $5K+/month on paid ads (Meta, Google, TikTok, Microsoft, LinkedIn)
  • Your reported ROAS doesn’t match what your bank account is saying
  • You want to own your tracking stack — no monthly SaaS fees forever
  • You have 2–4 days to do this once and never think about it again
Not a fit

Skip us if…

  • You spend less than $500/month on paid ads (browser pixel is fine)
  • You want a SaaS dashboard with monthly fees forever (Triple Whale, Hyros)
  • You need attribution modeling — we fix the data foundation, not multi-touch reports
  • You want a 6-month enterprise consulting engagement (we ship in 4 days)
  • You expect us to manage your ad accounts (we don’t — that’s a different service)

If you’re still unsure, book the call anyway— we’ll tell you straight whether we can help.

What you get

The implementation, on Amazon Ads

Item 01

Capture the Amazon click identifier, where one exists on landing

For off-Amazon destinations, capture and persist the click identifier as with any network. For on-Amazon destinations there is nothing to capture.

Item 02

Persist it to the order record in your store

Set a first-party cookie server-side before the hop, and pass the identifier into the payment domain where the provider supports it — where it doesn't, the order record is the only path.

Item 03

Send purchase sent with the order id from the record

The order webhook fires once per order, independent of which payment path the customer took or whether they ever saw a confirmation page. Dispatched to Amazon Ads through the Amazon Ads conversion API, for off-Amazon destinations only.

Item 04

Deduplicate and reverse

Deduplication only arises for off-amazon conversions where both a tag and a server event exist. Refunds reverse from the refund webhook; failed and cancelled orders should never have counted in the first place.

Got questions?

The honestanswers.

No buzzwords, no upsell. If we don’t know, we say so.

01Why isn't payment info submitted enough to optimize on?

Because checkout starts are plentiful and the completion rate varies hugely by channel and device. Optimizing on starts buys traffic that begins checkouts and abandons them.

02How does the identifier survive to purchase sent with the order id?

It doesn't, as a cookie — the gap is too long. It has to be written onto the order record in your store at the point of checkout started, where it lives as a field rather than as browser storage.

03What does Amazon Ads need to accept the conversion?

For off-Amazon conversions: an event, a timestamp, a value and the click identifier. For on-Amazon conversions: nothing, because the measurement is not yours to do.

04How long does this take to build?

Two to four days for the implementation, plus a closed reconciliation window before we'd call it verified. Capture and persistence are the fiddly parts; the import itself is usually an afternoon.

05Can I do this myself?

Yes, and the reference pages on this site cover the mechanics. The part that's genuinely tedious rather than clever is keeping the Amazon click identifier, where one exists alive through multi-step forms and the hop to a hosted payment domain, which fails silently at every stage.
