Pinterest · Checkout → purchase · Conversion tracking
How to track checkout to purchase for Pinterest Ads
Everything between checkout starting and the order existing is where ecommerce tracking actually fails, and it fails differently depending on how your checkout is built. A hosted payment page is a different domain. A wallet payment can complete without the customer ever seeing the confirmation. Both produce orders in your store that no platform ever hears about. On Pinterest Ads the specifics that matter are the click identifier (the epik click identifier), the import mechanism (the Pinterest Conversions API), and Pinterest deduplicates on event_id, so the tag and the server event must agree on it. The chain only works end to end if the identifier is captured on landing and stored on the order record in your store — no cookie survives the gap between checkout started and purchase sent with the order id.

Where this funnel usually breaks
Wallet payments skip the confirmation page
Shop Pay and PayPal can be abandoned after the money moves. The order is real; the page view never happened.
A hosted payment page on another domain
Session splits, the click identifier doesn't cross, and the purchase gets credited to your own site as a referral.
Every payment method assumed to behave the same
Card, wallet and redirect gateways each return differently, and the untested one is where the missing conversions are.
Architecture
The exact event sequence
Five stages. Stage three is the one you often can't instrument, which is precisely why stage four has to be the source. The identifier has to survive all of them.
Step 1
Checkout started
Browser-side, with value. The last point you reliably control the page.
Step 2
Payment info submitted
Worth splitting out — it turns one opaque step into a diagnosable one.
Step 3
Payment authorised
Often on someone else's domain, and frequently invisible to your tags entirely.
Step 4
Order created
From the order webhook. This is the only step that sees every order regardless of how payment happened.
Step 5
Purchase sent with the order ID
Deduplicated on that ID, with refunds wired to reverse.
Diagnostic sequence
What's specific to Pinterest Ads
The funnel logic above is the same wherever you advertise. These are the parts that change because it's Pinterest Ads.
- 1
Click identifier: the epik click identifier
Pinterest appends epik to your landing page URL and the tag stores it in the _epik cookie. It is a single parameter rather than Google's three, which makes capture simpler — but Pinterest traffic skews heavily to iOS and to saved Pins opened weeks after they were first seen, so the identifier frequently arrives on a visit that is nowhere near the conversion. Persist it server-side the moment you see it.
- 2
Import mechanism: the Conversions API
Server events posted to Pinterest's Conversions API, carrying the click identifier where you have it plus hashed customer information. Pinterest's API has been through more than one revision — check the current endpoint and required field names against Pinterest's own documentation before building, rather than trusting an older integration guide.
- 3
Deduplication
Same shape as Meta: the browser tag and the Conversions API event must carry the same event_id for the same conversion, and the event name must match too. Send both without pairing them and every conversion counts twice. This is worth testing deliberately, because Pinterest volumes are often low enough that a doubling looks like a good week rather than a bug.
- 4
Window and timing
Pinterest's attribution windows are configurable per campaign and separate the click path from the engagement and view paths, which is unusual. Confirm which window your reporting is set to before comparing anything, and verify the accepted event-freshness limit for server events against Pinterest's current documentation.
- 5
The Pinterest gotcha
Pinterest is a save-now-buy-later platform in a way the other networks are not. A Pin saved in October and acted on in December is normal behavior, and it sits far outside any sensible click window — so a share of genuine Pinterest-driven revenue is structurally unattributable no matter how good the build is. Say that out loud before anyone sets a target.
Source-of-truth validation
How to prove the chain works
One real journey, followed all the way, then a reconciliation. Neither on its own is enough.
- A live Pinterest ad clicked, and the identifier confirmed present on the landing URL.
- The same identifier confirmed on the order record in your store after a full real journey through every step.
- Purchase sent with the order ID confirmed arriving at Pinterest Ads, verified by the event delivery and match reporting inside Pinterest Ads Manager, not the API response code.
- Your store's order records, web orders only reconciled against Pinterest Ads per record over a fully closed window.
- The same reconciliation repeated 30 days later.
Straight talk
When this doesn't apply to you
Worth checking before you build anything, because two of these are common and both mean the work isn't worth doing.
- If your checkout is entirely on your own domain with no wallet options and a confirmation page every customer reaches, the browser-side event may genuinely be sufficient — reconcile a closed week and find out before building anything.
- If Pinterest is a small test line on your media plan, the Conversions API is more work than the signal is worth this quarter. It earns its keep when Pinterest is a channel you are actually scaling.
- If your cycle from click to purchase sent with the order id regularly exceeds the import window, the final event can't drive bidding whatever you build. Optimize toward payment info submitted instead and use the later data for budget decisions rather than for bidding.
- If almost none of your orders carry a click identifier today, that's the whole project. Fix capture first — the import is the easy half and no tooling rescues a record with nothing to reference.
Who this is for
Honest about who we’re a fit for.
We don’t take every project. Here’s how to tell if we’re right for you.
You’re a great fit if…
- You run Pinterest · Checkout → purchase (or are migrating to it)
- You spend $5K+/month on paid ads (Meta, Google, TikTok, Microsoft, LinkedIn)
- Your reported ROAS doesn’t match what your bank account is saying
- You want to own your tracking stack — no monthly SaaS fees forever
- You have 2–4 days to do this once and never think about it again
Skip us if…
- You spend less than $500/month on paid ads (browser pixel is fine)
- You want a SaaS dashboard with monthly fees forever (Triple Whale, Hyros)
- You need attribution modeling — we fix the data foundation, not multi-touch reports
- You want a 6-month enterprise consulting engagement (we ship in 4 days)
- You expect us to manage your ad accounts (we don’t — that’s a different service)
If you’re still unsure, book the call anyway— we’ll tell you straight whether we can help.
What working looks like
Purchase sent with the order ID attributed to the click
Server-sideWeeks later if necessary, because the identifier lives on the order record in your store rather than in a cookie.
Pinterest bidding fed the real outcome
8+ EMQVia the Conversions API, so it optimizes toward completed orders rather than toward checkout starts.
A reconciliation that closes
DedupedYour store's order records, web orders only matched per record against what Pinterest Ads reports, over a fully closed window.
The implementation, on Pinterest Ads
Capture the epik click identifier on landing
Read epik from the landing URL and write it to a first-party cookie and to your own record immediately. Do not rely on the _epik cookie surviving — Pinterest's in-app browser and iOS together make it one of the shorter-lived identifiers in paid media.
Persist it to the order record in your store
Set a first-party cookie server-side before the hop, and pass the identifier into the payment domain where the provider supports it — where it doesn't, the order record is the only path.
Send purchase sent with the order id from the record
The order webhook fires once per order, independent of which payment path the customer took or whether they ever saw a confirmation page. Dispatched to Pinterest Ads through the Pinterest Conversions API.
Deduplicate and reverse
Pinterest deduplicates on event_id, so the tag and the server event must agree on it. Refunds reverse from the refund webhook; failed and cancelled orders should never have counted in the first place.
Pick the package that fits your ad spend
Fixed-fee, no surprises. If your ad spend is meaningful,server-side tracking is what we recommend— it’s the only setup that survives iOS, Safari ITP and ad blockers.
Browser-side starter
Repairs the browser-side half of this funnel and verifies it on a live conversion. Honest about its ceiling: it can't reach the part that happens off-browser.
- Capture and firing fixed at the source
- Verified on a live conversion
- Reconciled against your own records
- Written handover
1st-party server-side
Save $18K–$120K over 5 years vs Triple Whale / Hyros
The whole chain: identifier captured and persisted, the downstream event sent from your own records, deduplicated at the destination.
- First-party server container on your own subdomain
- Downstream conversion sent from your records, not a page
- Deduplicated on a shared event ID
- Identifier persisted where a cookie can't survive
- 95%+ accuracy and 8+ Meta EMQ, guaranteed in writing

Got questions?
The honestanswers.
No buzzwords, no upsell. If we don’t know, we say so.
01Why isn't payment info submitted enough to optimize on?
Because checkout starts are plentiful and the completion rate varies hugely by channel and device. Optimizing on starts buys traffic that begins checkouts and abandons them.
02How does the identifier survive to purchase sent with the order id?
It doesn't, as a cookie — the gap is too long. It has to be written onto the order record in your store at the point of checkout started, where it lives as a field rather than as browser storage.
03What does Pinterest Ads need to accept the conversion?
An event name Pinterest recognizes, an event_id matched to the tag, a timestamp, hashed customer information, and the click identifier where you have it. Read the delivered and matched counts in Pinterest's reporting rather than assuming a 200 response means the event landed usefully.
04How long does this take to build?
Two to four days for the implementation, plus a closed reconciliation window before we'd call it verified. Capture and persistence are the fiddly parts; the import itself is usually an afternoon.
05Can I do this myself?
Yes, and the reference pages on this site cover the mechanics. The part that's genuinely tedious rather than clever is keeping the epik click identifier alive through multi-step forms and the hop to a hosted payment domain, which fails silently at every stage.
