How to track lapsed customer reactivation to repeat purchase for Reddit Ads
A win-back campaign targets people who already bought from you once, which means the hardest question is not attribution but counterfactual: how many of them would have returned without the campaign? On Reddit Ads the specifics that matter are the click identifier (the rdt_cid click identifier), the import mechanism (the Reddit Conversions API), and Reddit deduplicates on the conversion ID carried on both the pixel event and the server event. The chain only works end to end if the identifier is captured on landing and stored on the repeat purchase from a lapsed customer — no cookie survives the gap between lapse defined and repeat purchase.

Where this funnel usually breaks
No holdout group
Without one, the reported return is the sum of the campaign's effect and the natural repurchase rate, and there is no way to separate them.
Lapse threshold set by convention
Pick it from your own repurchase curve, not from a blog post. The wrong threshold puts active customers in the win-back audience and credits the campaign with ordinary reorders.
First-purchase identifiers still attached
The original acquisition click is often still on the customer record, so the reactivated purchase gets credited to a campaign from two years ago as well.

Reddit win-back: weak fit, and your list may barely match
Track reactivation on Reddit, if you test it at all, by uploading lapsed customers as a customer list audience where your account supports it, holding back a random share, and sending repeat orders through the Reddit Conversions API with the order ID. Expect low list match rates, and judge results only on the holdout comparison.
Reddit is a weak fit for win-back. Users are pseudonymous, and the email they use for Reddit is often not the one they shopped with, so lapsed-customer lists may match a small share. Check whether your account supports customer list audiences and what match it reports before planning, and treat anything under a few thousand matched users as too small to read.
Where it can work is with products that have an active subreddit around them, such as hobby gear, gaming hardware or specialty food, where lapsed customers still read the community. Contextual targeting of that subreddit reaches lapsed and active customers alike, which is not a win-back campaign in the measurement sense, so any claimed reactivation there needs the holdout to mean anything.
Send repeat orders through the Conversions API from the order system, server-only if your pixel loss is high, using the order ID as the conversion identifier and attaching rdt_cid only when it came from a fresh click. Record lapse status and holdout group on each order. If the holdout shows no gap after a fair test, stop: email to the same list will be cheaper.
Architecture
The exact event sequence
Five stages. Nothing breaks technically — the tracking works perfectly. The problem is that a campaign shown only to people who already like you will always look effective. The identifier has to survive all of them.
Step 1
Lapse defined
The first real decision. Ninety days for a coffee subscription and ninety days for a mattress company mean entirely different things.
Step 2
Audience built
From your own customer list, uploaded to the platform. Everyone in it has bought before.
Step 3
Ad served
To a known past customer, who may already have been intending to reorder.
Step 4
Return visit
Frequently direct, because they know your brand and type the URL.
Step 5
Repeat purchase
Credited to the campaign, whether or not the campaign caused it.
Diagnostic sequence
What's specific to Reddit Ads
The funnel logic above is the same wherever you advertise. These are the parts that change because it's Reddit Ads.
- 1
Click identifier: the rdt_cid click identifier
Reddit appends rdt_cid to your landing page URL, and the Reddit Pixel keeps its own identifier in the _rdt_uuid cookie. Reddit's audience is unusually privacy-aware — ad-blocker and tracker-blocker usage on Reddit traffic runs well above the web average — so the share of visits where the pixel never loads at all is higher here than on any other network in this list. The URL parameter is the identifier that survives; the cookie often does not.
- 2
Import mechanism: the Conversions API
Server events posted to Reddit's Conversions API with the click identifier and hashed customer information. Reddit's implementation is younger than Meta's and its documentation moves — confirm the current endpoint, event names and required fields against Reddit's own developer docs rather than an integration blog post.
- 3
Deduplication
The pixel and the Conversions API event must carry the same conversion identifier for the same action. Because so much Reddit traffic never runs the pixel at all, a lot of accounts skip the pixel entirely and send server-side only — which is a legitimate choice here in a way it rarely is elsewhere, and it removes the deduplication problem completely. Decide deliberately rather than running both and hoping.
- 4
Window and timing
Reddit's default attribution windows are shorter than Meta's and are configurable. Check what your account is set to before reconciling anything, and verify the accepted event-freshness limit for server events against Reddit's current documentation.
- 5
The Reddit gotcha
Reddit converts on a delay and on trust. People read a thread, leave, think about it, and come back through a branded search a week later — which is a genuine Reddit-driven conversion that Reddit will never be credited for and Google will happily claim. If Reddit is judged purely on last-click inside its own window, it will always look worse than it is. Build the measurement, then argue about attribution with that context on the table.
Source-of-truth validation
How to prove the chain works
One real journey, followed all the way, then a reconciliation. Neither on its own is enough.
- A live Reddit ad clicked, and the identifier confirmed present on the landing URL.
- The same identifier confirmed on the repeat purchase from a lapsed customer after a full real journey through every step.
- Repeat purchase confirmed arriving at Reddit Ads, verified by the events received and matched in Reddit Ads Manager, reconciled against your own records.
- Your order system, with customer lapse status at the time of the ad reconciled against Reddit Ads per record over a fully closed window.
- The same reconciliation repeated 30 days later.
Straight talk
When this doesn't apply to you
Worth checking before you build anything, because two of these are common and both mean the work isn't worth doing.
- If you have no repeat purchase behaviour at all — a one-time high-value product — there is no reactivation funnel to build.
- If you are not running Reddit at meaningful spend, skip it. And if your Reddit strategy is organic community presence rather than ads, none of this applies — that traffic has no click identifier by definition.
- If your cycle from click to repeat purchase regularly exceeds the import window, the final event can't drive bidding whatever you build. Optimize toward repeat purchases, reported against a holdout rather than in isolation instead and use the later data for budget decisions rather than for bidding.
- If almost none of your reactivated purchases carry a click identifier today, that's the whole project. Fix capture first — the import is the easy half and no tooling rescues a record with nothing to reference.
What working looks like
Repeat purchase attributed to the click
Server-sideWeeks later if necessary, because the identifier lives on the repeat purchase from a lapsed customer rather than in a cookie.
Reddit bidding fed the real outcome
8+ EMQVia the Conversions API, so it optimizes toward incremental repeat purchases rather than toward repeat purchases in the targeted audience.
A reconciliation that closes
DedupedYour order system, with customer lapse status at the time of the ad matched per record against what Reddit Ads reports, over a fully closed window.
The implementation, on Reddit Ads
Capture the rdt_cid click identifier on landing
Read rdt_cid from the landing URL and persist it server-side on first sight. Do not build on the pixel's cookie — on this audience specifically, assuming the pixel ran is the mistake.
Persist it to the repeat purchase from a lapsed customer
Hold back a randomized share of the lapsed audience and never advertise to them. The difference between the two groups is the only honest number this funnel produces.
Send repeat purchase from the record
Your order system, on the repeat purchase, with the customer's lapse status and holdout assignment attached. Dispatched to Reddit Ads through the Reddit Conversions API.
Deduplicate and reverse
Reddit deduplicates on the conversion id carried on both the pixel event and the server event. Refunds reverse.

The honestanswers.
No buzzwords, no upsell. If we don’t know, we say so.
01Can Reddit target my past customers?
Check whether your account supports customer list audiences and how much of your list matches. Pseudonymous accounts often mean a low match.
02Is subreddit targeting a valid win-back campaign?
Not on its own. It reaches active and lapsed customers alike, so only a holdout comparison shows whether lapsed buyers came back because of it.
03Why isn't audience built enough to optimize on?
Because purchases inside a targeted audience measure the audience, not the advertising. Only the gap against a holdout measures the campaign.
04How does the identifier survive to repeat purchase?
It doesn't, as a cookie — the gap is too long. It has to be written onto the repeat purchase from a lapsed customer at the point of lapse defined, where it lives as a field rather than as browser storage.
05What does Reddit Ads need to accept the conversion?
An event name Reddit recognizes, a conversion identifier matched to the pixel if you are also running one, a timestamp, hashed customer information, and the click identifier where you have it.
06How long does this take to build?
Two to four days for the implementation, plus a closed reconciliation window before we'd call it verified. Capture and persistence are the fiddly parts; the import itself is usually an afternoon.
07Can I do this myself?
Yes, and the reference pages on this site cover the mechanics. The part that's genuinely tedious rather than clever is keeping the rdt_cid click identifier alive through multi-step forms and a campaign audience that would have converted anyway, which fails silently at every stage.
