Facebook Marketplace conversion tracking: "Is this still available?" sold the sofa. Did your ad?

Your team lives in Marketplace messages, deals close at the loading dock, and nobody notes whether that buyer clicked your Google or Facebook ad first. Marketplace gives you a Sold button, not a pixel or a lead export. We build the record on your side: a source on every Marketplace chat and call, and ad platforms credited only with buyers they can actually be matched to.

Facebook Marketplace · what breaks

What goes wrong when you sell on Facebook Marketplace and run ads

  1. 01

"Marketplace is our best channel, and I can't prove it"

The mattress or washer leaves as cash in the drawer with no source. When you set next month's ad budget, the channel moving the most units has no numbers beside it.

  2. 02

"Meta says our ads sold it, but they found it on our listing"

Every Marketplace buyer messages you from a Facebook account. Upload all your sales to Meta and it can match them to people who scrolled past an ad, then report free listing sales as ad results and bid for more.

  3. 03

"Google shows a handful of calls, and our golf carts keep selling"

A shopper clicks your Google ad, then finds the same cart in your Marketplace listing and messages you there. The sale is logged as Marketplace, Google's bidding sees nothing, and it pulls back on the searches that started those deals.

  4. 04

"The Marketplace line in Ads Manager isn't our listings"

Ads Manager reports a Facebook Marketplace placement: your paid ad shown while people browse Marketplace. Read it as listing performance and you'll misjudge both.

Facebook Marketplace · the fix

What changes after the fix — Facebook Marketplace

  • Each Marketplace buyer carries a source

Marketplace chat, Marketplace call, Google ad, Meta ad or walk-in, recorded when the conversation starts instead of guessed when the truck is loaded.

  • Meta and Google learn from their own buyers

Website leads with a click ID or hashed contact details go to the ad platforms. Buyers who only ever messaged a listing stay out, so bidding chases sales the ads actually started.

  • Marketplace earns its hours on paper

Each month you see units and revenue from Marketplace chats beside what each ad channel sold, so you can decide how many staff hours the Messenger inbox deserves.

Facebook Marketplace · architecture

What Facebook Marketplace actually lets you connect

Very little. A listing is a facebook.com page you can't tag, and the buyer talks to you in Messenger. Facebook's seller help covers listings and their Available, Pending and Sold statuses; we found no lead export, webhook or pixel, so the tracking lives on your side.

  1. 1

    Listing status

Marking an item Sold hides it and messages everyone who asked about it; Pending warns new buyers. Useful for your team, but not data you can pull out.

  2. 2

    Messenger threads

Mark as sold also offers to archive the thread, which is where buyer details vanish. We make logging the name, phone and listing the step before that.

  3. 3

    Meta's messaging Conversions API

Meta's Conversions API for Business Messaging builds Messenger events around a Page ID and a Page-scoped user ID. We check whether your Marketplace chats come through a business Page at all; if they don't, there's no Page for those events to sit under.

  4. 4

    The Marketplace ad placement

Meta can show your ads on the Marketplace home page and while people browse it. Those clicks land on your site or open a chat, so they track like any Meta ad.

  5. 5

Your own Google and Meta connections

Google offline conversion import with the gclid, enhanced conversions for leads, and Conversions API events with phone_call, chat or physical_store as the action source.

Facebook Marketplace · diagnose

Where Marketplace tracking breaks, in the order we check

We start in Messenger, because that's where most Marketplace sales begin and where the source disappears first.

  1. 01

    Scroll your archived Marketplace threads

Line them up against sales. A sold item with no logged buyer is a lost source.

  2. 02

    See how staff record Marketplace

A pick list, a free-typed note, or nothing at all when the buyer turns up with cash.

  3. 03

Check the number in your listings

If listings show your main line, Marketplace calls and Google ad calls blur together.

  4. 04

Read your Meta and Google sales uploads

Look for Marketplace-only buyers going out as ad conversions.

  5. 05

Break Ads Manager out by placement

Separate paid Marketplace placement results from your free listings, then compare each channel's sales with its reported conversions over a closed month.

The QA evidence — Facebook Marketplace

We test with your real listings, inbox and sales records, not a demo account.

Source of truth

Your POS, invoices or sales sheet: units sold and paid by date, with the amount and the source recorded at the first Marketplace message or call

  • A test Messenger inquiry on a live listing, logged with the Facebook Marketplace source before the thread is archived.
  • A test call to the listing's tracking number, labeled Marketplace and absent from Google Ads call reporting.
  • An ad-tagged website lead, with the click ID visible on the CRM record.
  • Last month's Meta and Google uploads checked line by line for Marketplace-only buyers.
  • Sold units per channel matched against Google Ads and Meta over a closed month, then rechecked 30 days later.

Facebook Marketplace · when not to buy

When you don't need this — Facebook Marketplace

Many Marketplace sellers are fine without us.

  • If you don't pay for Google or Meta ads, a source column in your sales sheet and the habit of logging buyers before marking items sold will tell you what Marketplace is worth.
  • If you sell a few pieces a week and one person answers every Marketplace message, they already know the answer. Have them write it down.
  • If Marketplace is your only sales channel, there's no ad bidding for it to confuse.
  • If all you need is a call-tracking number for your listings, your call-tracking provider can set that up, and we'll tell you so.

Facebook Marketplace · what we deliver

The event map for a store selling on Facebook Marketplace

  • Marketplace chat started

Logged as a lead with the source locked to Facebook Marketplace. Never sent to Google or Meta as an ad conversion.

  • Marketplace call

Counted on the tracking number in your listing text, if you show one, and kept out of ad call reporting.

  • Website lead from an ad

Keeps its gclid or fbclid plus hashed email and phone. The only lead type uploaded to ad platforms.

  • Deal agreed (marked Pending)

Mirrors the listing's Pending status as the qualified step in your CRM, first source untouched.

  • Pickup, delivery or rental booked

Furniture delivery, an equipment or party rental, a boat sea trial. Sent to ads only when an ad started the lead.

  • Sold and paid

From your POS or invoice with the amount. Ad-sourced sales go to Google and Meta; Marketplace-only sales stay internal.

FAQ

Facebook Marketplace questions, answered

No. We found nothing in Facebook's seller help that lets you tag a listing, so tracking runs through how your team logs Messenger chats and your CRM or POS.
