Local inventory ads get clicks. Which store actually made the sale?
"Google says my in-stock listings get clicks, but I can't tell which ones sold a hot tub or a bag of pavers." That's the usual complaint, because a local inventory click can land on a Google-hosted store page your tags never see, on your own page with a store code in the URL, or on a pickup later checkout. Fixed means every paid local click reaches your site with its store code and click ID, pickups count once at their real value, and free listings and modeled store visits sit on their own lines.

Google Merchant Center local inventory · what breaks
What goes wrong with Google local inventory
- 01
"Google says the ads drove store visits, but my register doesn't agree"
Store visits are modeled estimates from anonymous, aggregated data, added to All conversions. If that's your only in-store signal and it's set as a bidding goal, Smart Bidding chases a projection instead of the pool liner or upright piano somebody actually bought.
- 02
"I can't tell free listing traffic from the ads I pay for"
Free local listings and local inventory ads show the same products from the same local inventory data. Unless free clicks (which carry Merchant Center's srsltid result ID once key event tracking is on) are kept apart from paid clicks, you either credit ad spend with sales Google sent for free or cut a campaign that was working.
- 03
"Pickup orders don't tell me which store or which ad"
Google's docs put tracking parameters in ads_redirect, with {store_code} in both it and link_template. Miss that and pickup orders arrive without a location, so the yard with real demand gets the same budget as the one that never sells.
- 04
"Clicks to the Google-hosted page just disappear"
If you picked the Google-hosted product page, Google counts a click to it as an engagement and your site tags never run there. Directions taps and calls happen on Google's page, so unless Google Analytics is set up to measure them, the store with the busiest listing looks like it got nothing.
Google Merchant Center local inventory · the fix
What changes — Google Merchant Center local inventory
Paid local clicks tied to real orders, by store
Each local inventory ad click lands with its click ID and store code, and the pickup or online order it produces goes back to Google Ads at the order value for that location.
Free listings on their own line
Shopping free listings traffic is reported separately in GA4 and Merchant Center, so you can see what Google sends without paying, and campaign decisions use paid results only.
Store visits read as context, not proof
If you qualify, modeled store visits stay in their own column next to counted orders, and bidding learns from collected pickups rather than estimates.
Google Merchant Center local inventory · architecture
What Google local inventory actually lets you hook into
All of this comes from Google's Merchant Center and Google Ads help pages. Where Google is silent, we test on your account instead of assuming.
- 1
link_template with {store_code}
Required for store-specific product pages; your site builds the store page from the code, which must match your Business Profile store codes.
- 2
ads_redirect for tracking parameters
Google says URL tracking parameters belong here, with {store_code} included; mobile_link_template is optional for mobile pages.
- 3
Merchant Center key event tracking
Adds a srsltid result ID to free listing clicks and can take purchase key events from a linked GA4 property, where the source shows as Shopping free listings.
- 4
Google-hosted store page
Clicks count as engagements; third-party tracking templates work only for approved providers, and restricted data processing turns them off for users in some US states.
- 5
Store visit conversions
Modeled and aggregated, needing active location assets, a verified Business Profile and enough traffic for privacy thresholds.
- 6
Pickup later checkout on your site
Google requires shoppers to buy or reserve on your website, so that checkout is where the order event and value come from.
Google Merchant Center local inventory · diagnose
Where Google local inventory tracking breaks, in diagnostic order
Start with where the click lands, because a Google-hosted page and your own store page fail in completely different ways.
- 01
Confirm the product page experience in Add-ons
Google-hosted, your page with in-store availability, or store-specific pages: it decides what can be measured at all.
- 02
Click a live local ad and read the landing URL
Check the store code, the tracking parameters from ads_redirect and the gclid all survive redirects.
- 03
Match store codes to Business Profile
They're case-sensitive; a mismatch sends shoppers to the wrong store page or none.
- 04
Place a test pickup order
One conversion, the right store, the right value, and no sale counted for an unpaid reservation.
- 05
Check what bidding optimizes toward
Whether Store visits or a purchase action is the goal, and whether free listing sales leak into paid conversions.

Source of truth
Your store's order records: pickup and online orders by store code, with collection status and value, checked against the Merchant Center local inventory data
- A local inventory ad click landing with gclid, tracking parameters and the correct store code on the product page.
- A free listing click landing with its srsltid result ID and reported as Shopping free listings in GA4.
- One test pickup order recorded once in Google Ads with the right store and value.
- An unpaid reservation shown as a leading signal, not a purchase.
- Store visits confirmed in their own column, outside the purchase conversion.
- Collected pickups matched by store and date across a fully closed window.
- The same store-by-store match rerun a month later, and again whenever store codes or the local inventory feed change.

Google Merchant Center local inventory · when not to buy
When you don't need this on Google local inventory
Plenty of local retailers on Merchant Center need a settings check, not a rebuild.
- If you only run free local listings and no ads, Merchant Center key event tracking plus a GA4 link may tell you enough.
- If you use the Google-hosted page and sell nothing online, there's no order on your site to track; your POS and store visits (if you qualify) are the measure, and we'll say so.
- If listings are disapproved or stuck in inventory verification, that's a feed problem to fix before tracking matters.
- If you have one small store and few local clicks, a monthly sales comparison beats a server build.
Google Merchant Center local inventory · what we deliver
The event map on Google local inventory
Store-specific product page viewed
Arrival from a local ad or free listing, with the store code from the URL and the click source (gclid or srsltid) stored first-party.
Store chosen and pickup selected
Leading signal: the shopper picked a location and a pickup option, with the pickup_sla window attached.
Pickup order or reservation placed
Logged with store, items and value. Reservations without payment stay a leading signal, not a sale.
Pickup collected and paid
The conversion Google Ads bids on, valued from your order record for that store.
Directions and calls from Google's page
Recorded as engagement where Google exposes them, excluded from purchase conversions.
Uncollected or cancelled pickups
Excluded or adjusted, and modeled store visits never merged with counted orders.
FAQ
Google Merchant Center local inventory questions, answered
Not as ad conversions, because they aren't paid clicks. With Merchant Center key event tracking on, free listing clicks carry a srsltid result ID and GA4 reports them as Shopping free listings, and we keep them on that separate line.
They're modeled estimates built from anonymous, aggregated data, reported in All conversions. Useful as a trend, but they aren't counted sales, so we don't let them stand in for your register.
Google's docs say in the ads_redirect attribute, not link_template, with {store_code} included in both. Leave the store code out of ads_redirect and a pickup order can arrive with no store attached.
No, it's Google's page. Google counts the click as an engagement, allows third-party tracking templates there only for approved providers, and its FAQ says Google Analytics can measure actions like directions and calls.
Google requires shoppers to buy or reserve on your website, so the event fires in your checkout. We count it as a sale when it's paid or collected, with the store attached.
Google's setup guide says local inventory ads are moving to run by default in Shopping campaigns, and that merchants who want separate online and local budgets should review campaign settings and inventory filters. We check yours before reading any results.
