Viator conversion tracking: stop Google and Meta taking credit for seats Viator sold

Once Viator is connected to your reservation system (Bókun is one documented connectivity partner), its Booking API drops each paid Viator sale into your calendar, and Viator doesn't email you when that works. To a booking-confirmed trigger, a Viator party of four on the sunset cruise looks like any other booking, so Google and Meta get credit for seats Viator sold. We separate the two, send only direct bookings to your ad accounts, and show you what each channel really earns.

Viator · what breaks

What goes wrong when Viator shares a calendar with your ads

  1. 01

"Google Ads thinks it sold my Viator bookings"

Viator's Booking API writes each paid sale into your reservation system the moment the traveler pays. If a booking-confirmed trigger feeds Google Ads or Meta, Smart Bidding learns that your ads filled the zipline or fishing charter and bids up clicks that didn't do the work.

  2. 02

"They clicked my ad, then booked on Viator"

A couple finds your balloon ride through a search ad, then books the same trip on Viator because they already have an account there. The booking Viator sends you carries no ad click ID, so your ad report says that click sold nothing.

  3. 03

"Rescheduled Viator trips mess up my numbers"

Viator's Booking Amendment API can change the date, traveler mix, hotel details or tour option on a confirmed booking. If your setup treats the updated record as new, one family of five becomes two sales.

  4. 04

"I can't say if ads beat Viator's cut"

Viator's own calendar data separates the retail price travelers pay from a net price for operators on a net agreement. Without that number set against your ad spend per direct booking, a bike rental or ski school can't tell which channel earns more per seat.

Viator · the fix

What changes — Viator

  • Your ads only learn from bookings they caused

Any booking that arrived through Viator's API is tagged by its Viator reference and kept out of Google Ads and Meta. Direct bookings with a stored click ID go through, once each.

  • Viator gets its own honest column

Viator bookings, amendments and cancellations are reported as marketplace revenue, at what you actually keep, instead of hiding inside your direct totals.

  • A clear call on next month's budget

Cost per direct booking from Google and Meta next to your Viator margin per booking shows whether to push ads in shoulder season or let Viator carry slow weeks.

Viator · architecture

What Viator actually lets you hook into

Viator's checkout runs on its own site, and its supplier docs describe no slot for your Google tag or Meta Pixel. What they do document is a reservation system API, and that's where tracking gets fixed.

  1. 1

Booking API into your reservation system

Viator calls your system after the customer pays, sending booking references, amount, currency, travelers and contact details. You're emailed only when that transmission fails, so successful bookings arrive quietly.

  2. 2

    Reserve holds before payment

Viator asks your system to hold inventory and price for at least 15 minutes while the traveler checks out. We confirm nothing in your setup fires a conversion on a hold that never turns into a booking.

  3. 3

    Amendment and cancellation calls

Amendments change the lead traveler's name, traveler mix, date, hotel details or tour option on the existing booking. Viator says its cancellation call carries no refund details, so refund amounts have to be confirmed on Viator's side, not read from that call.

  4. 4

    Obfuscated traveler email

Viator never passes the traveler's real email. The relay address on a tripadvisor.com domain stays valid for 30 days after the travel date, and it isn't the address a traveler uses for Google or Meta, so it won't match their ad accounts.

  5. 5

    Affiliate links, a separate program

Viator's affiliate program uses a 30-day cookie window on referred traffic. Whether a supplier can use it on its own listings is something we check in your agreement, not assume.

Viator · diagnose

Where Viator tracking breaks, in diagnostic order

Start with over-counting, because on a calendar shared with Viator the usual fault is ads taking credit rather than missing it.

  1. 01

Check whether a Viator booking reached Google Ads or Meta

Search both platforms for the date and value of one known Viator sale.

  2. 02

    Find the trigger that fired

Often a reservation-system ad integration, a confirmation-page tag or a Zapier zap set to fire on every new booking, Viator's included.

  3. 03

    Test an amendment

Change a test booking's date or party size and see whether a second conversion appears.

  4. 04

Confirm the click ID on a direct booking

Book once from an ad-tagged link and open the reservation record.

  5. 05

Check what Viator bookings are valued at

Retail price in your reports inflates Viator against your ads.

Source of truth

Your reservation system's booking records with the Viator booking reference, checked against the booking list in Viator's management center

  • One direct booking from an ad-tagged link, with the click ID visible on the reservation record.
  • One Meta Purchase per direct booking in Events Manager, browser and server copies merged on the same event ID.
  • Zero conversions in Google Ads or Meta for any booking carrying a Viator reference.
  • A Viator amendment updating the original record, with no new sale reported.
  • Every direct booking from a closed month found in Google Ads and Meta, and nothing extra.
  • Viator revenue reported at net, separate from direct revenue.
  • The same checks rerun a month later, and again whenever your Viator connection or reservation system changes.

Viator · when not to buy

When you don't need this for Viator

Some operators are better off leaving it alone.

  • If you don't run Google or Meta ads and Viator fills most of your departures, its own reporting already answers your questions.
  • If you key Viator bookings in by hand instead of connecting the API, nothing leaks into your ad accounts. Just make sure your direct checkout tracks correctly.
  • If your ads send people straight to your Viator listing, there's no booking we can match back. Point those ads at a direct booking page first, or judge them on clicks.
  • If your reservation system already filters Viator bookings out and your direct purchase fires once, a 15-minute settings check is all you need.

Viator · what we deliver

The event map for an operator selling on Viator

  • Booking page reached from an ad

The visit is stored first-party with its click ID before your booking widget opens, so the direct sale can be tied back later.

  • Direct booking paid

The conversion Google Ads and Meta bid on, valued from the real ticket, charter or rental total, sent once from browser and server with a shared event ID.

  • Tap out to your Viator listing

If your site links to Viator, the tap is logged as an outbound click only, since the sale finishes on Viator's side.

  • Viator booking received

Recorded for reporting from the Viator booking reference in your reservation system, valued at your net, and excluded from every ad upload.

  • Viator amendment

Matched to the original booking so a new date or traveler mix updates the record and its value instead of adding a sale.

  • Cancellation

Direct cancellations reversed where each ad platform allows it. Viator cancellations stay in the marketplace column.

FAQ

Viator questions, answered

Not that we found. The checkout runs on Viator, and the booking it sends your reservation system has no ad click ID, so those sales can't be matched to your ads.
