How to track freemium signup to paid upgrade for TikTok Ads
Freemium converts at low single digits and the upgrade arrives months after the signup, which makes signups an abundant, cheap and almost uninformative optimisation target. The whole measurement problem is that the signal you have lots of predicts almost nothing about the one you need. On TikTok Ads the specifics that matter are the click identifier (ttclid), the import mechanism (the Events API), and deduplication uses a shared event ID between the pixel and the Events API, the same principle as Meta. The chain only works end to end if the identifier is captured on landing and stored on the first paid subscription in your billing system — no cookie survives the gap between ad click and first payment.

Where this funnel usually breaks
Optimising on free signups
Freemium signup-to-paid varies by a factor of several across channels, so bidding on signups reliably finds the channel with the worst rate — it produces the cheapest signups.
Attribution windows shorter than the upgrade lag
A user who upgrades in month four falls outside every default window, so the campaign shows zero revenue while producing all of it.
Activation defined as something everybody does
If your activation event fires for ninety percent of signups, it is not a filter and it predicts nothing.
Free-tier cost ignored
Every free user costs infrastructure. A channel producing enormous free volume and no upgrades is not cheap, it is expensive.
Specific to TikTok × Freemium → paid
TikTok freemium: cheap CompleteRegistration, rare paid upgrades
On TikTok, track a freemium upgrade by sending CompletePayment through the Events API from billing on first payment, matched on the ttclid stored on the account plus hashed email and phone. Expect very cheap free signups and a low upgrade rate, so judge TikTok on cohort upgrade rate rather than on cost per signup.
TikTok's audience signs up for consumer apps on impulse, which makes it the channel most likely to win a cost-per-signup comparison and lose an upgrade-rate one. A video that sparks curiosity can produce free-account volume that looks spectacular for two weeks. Pull upgrade rate by acquisition source at day 30 and day 90 before scaling, and don't be surprised if TikTok's ratio of free accounts to payers is the weakest in your mix.
The ttclid has to be written onto the user record at signup, not left in browser storage. A lot of TikTok traffic opens in the in-app browser, and that session ends when the user goes back to the feed. If they sign up later in Safari or Chrome, the identifier never reaches the account, and hashed email and phone on the Events API payload are the only way back to the ad.
Bid on an activation event that the in-app audience reaches in their first session or two, not on the paid upgrade, which will rarely reach the weekly volume TikTok's optimization needs. Send the upgrade as CompletePayment with the first charge as value for reporting, keep CompleteRegistration for the free account, and check TikTok's documentation for how old an event_time the Events API will still accept.
Architecture
The exact event sequence
Five stages. Nothing breaks technically. The funnel simply outlives every attribution window, and the abundant early signal is the least predictive one. The identifier has to survive all of them.
Step 1
Ad click
The identifier arrives. It has to be written onto the account, because a cookie will not survive to the upgrade.
Step 2
Free signup
Cheap, abundant, and converting at low single digits.
Step 3
Activation
The specific action that predicts payment for your product. Not 'signed up' and not 'logged in twice'.
Step 4
Limit reached
The moment the free tier stops being enough, which is what actually triggers upgrades.
Step 5
First payment
Frequently months after the click that produced the signup.
Diagnostic sequence
What's specific to TikTok Ads
The funnel logic above is the same wherever you advertise. These are the parts that change because it's TikTok Ads.
- 1
Click identifier: ttclid
TikTok's click identifier, appended to the landing URL. Capture it on landing and persist it exactly as you would gclid or fbclid — it's the strongest matching signal available and the most commonly missing one, because TikTok is often added to a stack that was built around Google and Meta.
- 2
Import mechanism: the Events API
Structurally similar to the other server-side conversion APIs: event name, timestamp, event ID, hashed user identifiers, event properties. TikTok's exact field names change more often than the other major platforms', so build against their current documentation rather than a blog post — including this one.
- 3
Deduplication
Send the same event ID from the browser pixel and the server event. The mechanics mirror Meta's closely enough that a team who has done one can do the other, but verify TikTok's current requirements rather than assuming parity — the deduplication window in particular isn't a figure we'll guess at.
- 4
Window and timing
Verify the current attribution and import windows in TikTok's documentation. They differ from Google's and Meta's, and quoting a number here that goes stale would be worse than sending you to the source.
- 5
The TikTok gotcha
TikTok is usually the third platform added to a stack, and it typically inherits whatever assumptions were made for Google and Meta. The most common result is that ttclid is never captured at all, because the capture code was written naming gclid and fbclid and nobody revisited it.
Source-of-truth validation
How to prove the chain works
One real journey, followed all the way, then a reconciliation. Neither on its own is enough.
- A live TikTok ad clicked, and the identifier confirmed present on the landing URL.
- The same identifier confirmed on the first paid subscription in your billing system after a full real journey through every step.
- First payment confirmed arriving at TikTok Ads, verified by TikTok's own event diagnostics, plus a reconciliation against your records.
- Your billing system, joined to the account's signup date reconciled against TikTok Ads per record over a fully closed window.
- The same reconciliation repeated 30 days later.
Straight talk
When this doesn't apply to you
Worth checking before you build anything, because two of these are common and both mean the work isn't worth doing.
- If your free tier exists for distribution or brand reasons rather than as a funnel, measure it on usage and stop — forcing a revenue model onto it produces a bad number and a worse decision.
- If TikTok is a small share of your spend, the effort is better spent making Google and Meta correct first — the same infrastructure then extends to TikTok as one additional tag rather than a separate project.
- If your cycle from click to first payment regularly exceeds the import window, the final event can't drive bidding whatever you build. Optimize toward activation, where activation is an event that fewer than half of signups reach instead and use the later data for budget decisions rather than for bidding.
- If almost none of your paid upgrades carry a click identifier today, that's the whole project. Fix capture first — the import is the easy half and no tooling rescues a record with nothing to reference.
What working looks like
First payment attributed to the click
Server-sideWeeks later if necessary, because the identifier lives on the first paid subscription in your billing system rather than in a cookie.
TikTok bidding fed the real outcome
8+ EMQVia the Events API, so it optimizes toward paid upgrades rather than toward free signups.
A reconciliation that closes
DedupedYour billing system, joined to the account's signup date matched per record against what TikTok Ads reports, over a fully closed window.
The implementation, on TikTok Ads
Capture ttclid on landing
ttclid is appended on ad clicks. Add it explicitly to your capture list — the single most common TikTok tracking fault is capture code that predates TikTok being in the account.
Persist it to the first paid subscription in your billing system
Write the identifier onto the account at signup, not into a cookie. The gap between signup and upgrade is measured in months.
Send first payment from the record
Your billing system on first payment, with the identifier carried from the original signup through the account record. Dispatched to TikTok Ads through the Events API.
Deduplicate and reverse
Deduplication uses a shared event id between the pixel and the events api, the same principle as meta. Cancellations inside the first billing period reverse.

The honestanswers.
No buzzwords, no upsell. If we don’t know, we say so.
01Which TikTok event should a freemium app optimize toward?
An activation event that fewer than half of signups reach and that happens soon after signup. CompleteRegistration is usually too loose, and the paid upgrade too sparse, for TikTok to learn from.
02Do TikTok signups from the in-app browser keep their attribution?
Only if the signup finishes in that same session or the ttclid is stored on the account straight away. Users who leave and sign up later in another browser can only be matched on hashed email or phone.
03Why isn't free signup enough to optimize on?
Because free signups outnumber upgrades by twenty to one or worse, and the ratio differs enough by channel that signup counts actively mislead about which traffic is worth buying.
04How does the identifier survive to first payment?
It doesn't, as a cookie — the gap is too long. It has to be written onto the first paid subscription in your billing system at the point of ad click, where it lives as a field rather than as browser storage.
05What does TikTok Ads need to accept the conversion?
A standard event name, an event timestamp, a shared event ID, hashed and normalized user identifiers, and ttclid where available. Confirm the current required fields in TikTok's documentation before building.
06How long does this take to build?
Two to four days for the implementation, plus a closed reconciliation window before we'd call it verified. Capture and persistence are the fiddly parts; the import itself is usually an afternoon.
07Can I do this myself?
Yes, and the reference pages on this site cover the mechanics. The part that's genuinely tedious rather than clever is keeping ttclid alive through multi-step forms and a funnel longer than any attribution window, which fails silently at every stage.
