How to track usage growth to plan upgrade for TikTok Ads

In most mature subscription businesses expansion exceeds new business, and none of it was produced by an advertisement. Pooling the two makes acquisition look several times more effective than it is and hides that growth came from customer success. On TikTok Ads the specifics that matter are the click identifier (ttclid), the import mechanism (the Events API), and deduplication uses a shared event ID between the pixel and the Events API, the same principle as Meta. The chain only works end to end if the identifier is captured on landing and stored on the plan upgrade or seat expansion in billing — no cookie survives the gap between original acquisition and expansion billed.

The problem

Where this funnel usually breaks

TikTok · Usage → expansion-specific issues
Leak #01

Expansion credited to the acquisition campaign

A campaign from two years ago collects revenue produced by a customer success team last week. It makes that campaign look unbeatable and unrepeatable at once.

Leak #02

Net revenue retention read as a marketing metric

It is a product and service metric. Marketing can influence who you acquire, not whether they expand.

Leak #03

Downgrades never reversed

Contraction is expansion's mirror and it is almost never wired, so reported net revenue drifts upward permanently.

Leak #04

Seat expansion in one account counted as new customers

Fifty new seats at an existing customer is not fifty acquisitions.

Specific to TikTok × Usage → expansion

TikTok and tier upgrades: keep prorated charges out of CompletePayment

For most subscription businesses, send nothing to TikTok for upgrades. CompletePayment should fire only on the first paid subscription, sent from billing through the Events API with ttclid and the pixel's event ID. Filter prorated and upgrade invoices out of that trigger before anything reaches TikTok.

TikTok's realistic subscription buyer is a consumer: a premium tier, a family plan, a switch from monthly to annual. Seat expansion inside a company account is rarely something a TikTok ad produced, and if your product only expands through seats, this platform has no expansion signal worth sending. Even where TikTok drives consumer subscriptions, the upgrade is a product moment, a usage cap hit or a gated feature, rather than a response to a video seen that week.

The concrete failure is a billing webhook wired to fire CompletePayment on every successful charge. When a customer moves up a tier mid-cycle, most billing systems issue a prorated invoice, and to a naive trigger that invoice looks identical to a new sale. TikTok then counts an existing subscriber as a fresh conversion, and because ttclid expired long ago, the match falls back on hashed email or phone and lands on whatever TikTok campaign that person last engaged with. Filter on the billing reason or invoice type before dispatch so only a first subscription reaches the Events API.

If you do want upgrades in TikTok reporting, send them under a separate event that no campaign optimizes toward, and confirm in TikTok's current documentation how custom events display in Ads Manager. Pass the price difference rather than the new plan's full price, and compare against billing, where new subscriptions and upgrades are already separate rows.

Architecture

The exact event sequence

Five stages. Nothing breaks technically. What breaks is attribution hygiene: expansion arrives on an account that still carries the original acquisition identifier, and takes its credit. The identifier has to survive all of them.

  1. Step 1

    Original acquisition

Months or years earlier. The click that started the relationship.

  2. Step 2

    Steady usage

The product working, which is a customer success outcome.

  3. Step 3

    Limit approached

Seats, volume or features running out.

  4. Step 4

    Upgrade prompted

By the product, by an account manager, or by the customer noticing.

  5. Step 5

    Expansion billed

Real revenue, produced by service rather than by media.

Diagnostic sequence

What's specific to TikTok Ads

The funnel logic above is the same wherever you advertise. These are the parts that change because it's TikTok Ads.

  1. 1

    Click identifier: ttclid

TikTok's click identifier, appended to the landing URL. Capture it on landing and persist it exactly as you would gclid or fbclid — it's the strongest matching signal available and the most commonly missing one, because TikTok is often added to a stack that was built around Google and Meta.

  2. 2

    Import mechanism: the Events API

Structurally similar to the other server-side conversion APIs: event name, timestamp, event ID, hashed user identifiers, event properties. TikTok's exact field names change more often than the other major platforms', so build against their current documentation rather than a blog post — including this one.

  3. 3

    Deduplication

Send the same event ID from the browser pixel and the server event. The mechanics mirror Meta's closely enough that a team who has done one can do the other, but verify TikTok's current requirements rather than assuming parity — the deduplication window in particular isn't a figure we'll guess at.

  4. 4

    Window and timing

Verify the current attribution and import windows in TikTok's documentation. They differ from Google's and Meta's, and quoting a number here that goes stale would be worse than sending you to the source.

  5. 5

    The TikTok gotcha

TikTok is usually the third platform added to a stack, and it typically inherits whatever assumptions were made for Google and Meta. The most common result is that ttclid is never captured at all, because the capture code was written naming gclid and fbclid and nobody revisited it.

Source-of-truth validation

How to prove the chain works

One real journey, followed all the way, then a reconciliation. Neither on its own is enough.

Source of truthyour billing system, with new business and expansion held apart
  • A live TikTok ad clicked, and the identifier confirmed present on the landing URL.
  • The same identifier confirmed on the plan upgrade or seat expansion in billing after a full real journey through every step.
  • Expansion billed confirmed arriving at TikTok Ads, verified by TikTok's own event diagnostics, plus a reconciliation against your records.
  • Your billing system, with new business and expansion held apart reconciled against TikTok Ads per record over a fully closed window.
  • The same reconciliation repeated 30 days later.

Straight talk

When this doesn't apply to you

Worth checking before you build anything, because two of these are common and both mean the work isn't worth doing.

  • If your product has no expansion path — one plan, one price, no seats — this funnel does not exist for you.
  • If TikTok is a small share of your spend, the effort is better spent making Google and Meta correct first — the same infrastructure then extends to TikTok as one additional tag rather than a separate project.
  • If your cycle from click to expansion billed regularly exceeds the import window, the final event can't drive bidding whatever you build. Optimize toward new-business revenue only, with expansion reported separately instead and use the later data for budget decisions rather than for bidding.
  • If almost none of your expansions carry a click identifier today, that's the whole project. Fix capture first — the import is the easy half and no tooling rescues a record with nothing to reference.

What you get

The implementation, on TikTok Ads

Item 01

Capture ttclid on landing

ttclid is appended on ad clicks. Add it explicitly to your capture list — the single most common TikTok tracking fault is capture code that predates TikTok being in the account.

Item 02

Persist it to the plan upgrade or seat expansion in billing

Keep the original acquisition identifier on the account for reporting, but do not let expansion events carry it into an ad platform.

Item 03

Send expansion billed from the record

Your billing system, as a separate expansion event that is never mixed with new-business conversions. Dispatched to TikTok Ads through the Events API.

Item 04

Deduplicate and reverse

Deduplication uses a shared event id between the pixel and the events api, the same principle as meta. Downgrades and contraction reverse against the expansion, not against acquisition.

Got questions?

The honestanswers.

No buzzwords, no upsell. If we don’t know, we say so.

01Why is TikTok reporting conversions from existing subscribers?

Usually a billing webhook fires CompletePayment on every charge, including prorated upgrade invoices. Restrict the trigger to the first paid subscription.

02Should a TikTok campaign optimize toward premium upgrades?

Only if it targets non-customers and the upgrade is their first payment, which makes it acquisition rather than expansion. Upgrades from existing subscribers should never be the optimization target.

03Why isn't steady usage enough to optimize on?

Because total revenue growth in a mature subscription business is mostly expansion, and optimising acquisition against it rewards campaigns for work the customer success team did.

04How does the identifier survive to expansion billed?

It doesn't, as a cookie — the gap is too long. It has to be written onto the plan upgrade or seat expansion in billing at the point of original acquisition, where it lives as a field rather than as browser storage.

05What does TikTok Ads need to accept the conversion?

A standard event name, an event timestamp, a shared event ID, hashed and normalized user identifiers, and ttclid where available. Confirm the current required fields in TikTok's documentation before building.

06How long does this take to build?

Two to four days for the implementation, plus a closed reconciliation window before we'd call it verified. Capture and persistence are the fiddly parts; the import itself is usually an afternoon.

07Can I do this myself?

Yes, and the reference pages on this site cover the mechanics. The part that's genuinely tedious rather than clever is keeping ttclid alive through multi-step forms and an account record that outlives every campaign that touched it, which fails silently at every stage.
