How to track freemium signup to paid upgrade for Google Ads

Freemium converts at low single digits and the upgrade arrives months after the signup, which makes signups an abundant, cheap and almost uninformative optimisation target. The whole measurement problem is that the signal you have lots of predicts almost nothing about the one you need. On Google Ads the specifics that matter are the click identifier (gclid, gbraid and wbraid), the import mechanism (Google's offline conversion import), and conversion actions deduplicate on their own counting setting rather than an event ID, so the setting matters more here than the payload. The chain only works end to end if the identifier is captured on landing and stored on the first paid subscription in your billing system — no cookie survives the gap between ad click and first payment.

The problem

Where this funnel usually breaks

Google Ads · Freemium → paid-specific issues
Leak #01

Optimising on free signups

Freemium signup-to-paid varies by a factor of several across channels, so bidding on signups reliably finds the channel with the worst rate — it produces the cheapest signups.

Leak #02

Attribution windows shorter than the upgrade lag

A user who upgrades in month four falls outside every default window, so the campaign shows zero revenue while producing all of it.

Leak #03

Activation defined as something everybody does

If your activation event fires for ninety percent of signups, it is not a filter and it predicts nothing.

Leak #04

Free-tier cost ignored

Every free user costs infrastructure. A channel producing enormous free volume and no upgrades is not cheap, it is expensive.

Specific to Google Ads × Freemium → paid

Google Ads freemium: import the first payment, not the signup

On Google Ads, track a freemium upgrade by importing the first paid subscription as an offline conversion, keyed on the gclid, gbraid or wbraid written onto the account at signup. Send it from the billing system with the first charge as value, and keep free signups as a secondary action that bidding ignores.

Search intent changes the freemium math on Google. Someone typing a category query is often comparing tools they expect to pay for, while broad Performance Max or Display placements fill the free tier with people who never will. That difference only shows up if the upgrade is imported per click, so make the first-payment action primary and demote the signup action to secondary, or Smart Bidding will drift toward whichever campaign produces the cheapest accounts.

The 90-day ceiling decides the design. Pull your median days from signup to first payment by acquisition source before choosing a bidding target. If most upgrades land inside 90 days of the click, the billing system can upload them directly. If a large share arrives in month four or later, import a selective activation event as the primary action with a modest proxy value, upload the upgrades that still fit, and report the late ones from billing.

Value and counting need deciding up front. Set the first-payment action to count one per click, because a later plan change is not a new acquisition, and pass either the first charge or an agreed first-year value consistently rather than mixing the two. Annual prepay and monthly plans produce very different first charges, so check that target ROAS isn't simply rewarding campaigns whose users happen to choose annual billing.

Architecture

The exact event sequence

Five stages. Nothing breaks technically. The funnel simply outlives every attribution window, and the abundant early signal is the least predictive one. The identifier has to survive all of them.

  1. Step 1

    Ad click

The identifier arrives. It has to be written onto the account, because a cookie will not survive to the upgrade.

  2. Step 2

    Free signup

Cheap, abundant, and converting at low single digits.

  3. Step 3

    Activation

The specific action that predicts payment for your product. Not 'signed up' and not 'logged in twice'.

  4. Step 4

    Limit reached

The moment the free tier stops being enough, which is what actually triggers upgrades.

  5. Step 5

    First payment

Frequently months after the click that produced the signup.

Diagnostic sequence

What's specific to Google Ads

The funnel logic above is the same wherever you advertise. These are the parts that change because it's Google Ads.

  1. 1

Click identifier: gclid, gbraid and wbraid

Three parameters, not one. gclid is the long-standing identifier; gbraid and wbraid arrive on iOS traffic where privacy constraints prevent the usual one. Capture code that names only gclid loses a growing share, silently, and the loss is invisible until you audit how many records carry an identifier.

  2. 2

    Import mechanism: offline conversion import

Uploaded against the click identifier, either through the Google Ads API or as a file. The upload is the easy part; what limits it is how many of your records carry an identifier at all. Verify the current column format against Google's own template — it has changed before.

  3. 3

    Deduplication

There's no shared event ID mechanism like Meta's. What matters instead is the counting setting on each conversion action — 'one' for lead-type conversions so a repeat submitter doesn't count three times, 'every' for ecommerce where a second purchase is a second sale. This is the single most common misconfiguration we find in Google Ads accounts.

  4. 4

    Window and timing

Google's offline import window is 90 days from the click. Anything older can't be matched, and rows outside it fail as unmatched without much explanation. Measure your median click-to-outcome time against that before designing anything.

  5. 5

    The Google Ads gotcha

A conversion action that stops receiving hits is flagged as inactive 30 days later — by which point a month of budget has already run against a missing signal. Check the last-received date on every action monthly; it takes two minutes and it's the cheapest monitoring available.

Source-of-truth validation

How to prove the chain works

One real journey, followed all the way, then a reconciliation. Neither on its own is enough.

Source of truthyour billing system, joined to the account's signup date
  • A live Google Ads ad clicked, and the identifier confirmed present on the landing URL.
  • The same identifier confirmed on the first paid subscription in your billing system after a full real journey through every step.
  • First payment confirmed arriving at Google Ads, verified by the match rate on the upload, not the success message.
  • Your billing system, joined to the account's signup date reconciled against Google Ads per record over a fully closed window.
  • The same reconciliation repeated 30 days later.

Straight talk

When this doesn't apply to you

Worth checking before you build anything, because two of these are common and both mean the work isn't worth doing.

  • If your free tier exists for distribution or brand reasons rather than as a funnel, measure it on usage and stop — forcing a revenue model onto it produces a bad number and a worse decision.
  • If you're running Performance Max exclusively and haven't separated your conversion actions, the import will work and the reporting won't tell you much. Worth sorting the account structure first.
  • If your cycle from click to first payment regularly exceeds the import window, the final event can't drive bidding whatever you build. Optimize toward activation, where activation is an event that fewer than half of signups reach instead and use the later data for budget decisions rather than for bidding.
  • If almost none of your paid upgrades carry a click identifier today, that's the whole project. Fix capture first — the import is the easy half and no tooling rescues a record with nothing to reference.

What you get

The implementation, on Google Ads

Item 01

Capture gclid, gbraid and wbraid on landing

Auto-tagging appends the identifier. Confirm it's enabled in every account — it gets switched off for cleaner analytics URLs more often than you'd expect, and that single setting removes conversion attribution, Enhanced Conversions and offline import in one go.

Item 02

Persist it to the first paid subscription in your billing system

Write the identifier onto the account at signup, not into a cookie. The gap between signup and upgrade is measured in months.

Item 03

Send first payment from the record

Your billing system on first payment, with the identifier carried from the original signup through the account record. Dispatched to Google Ads through Google's offline conversion import.

Item 04

Deduplicate and reverse

Conversion actions deduplicate on their own counting setting rather than an event id, so the setting matters more here than the payload. Cancellations inside the first billing period reverse.

Got questions?

The honestanswers.

No buzzwords, no upsell. If we don’t know, we say so.

01Should free signups be a primary conversion in Google Ads for a freemium product?

Usually not. Keep the signup as a secondary action for reporting and make the paid upgrade, or a selective activation event, the primary action that bidding uses.

02Can Enhanced Conversions for Leads match a freemium upgrade when the gclid is missing?

It can help when the hashed signup email is sent with the upload, since matching then runs on the user's Google account rather than the click. Confirm Google's customer data policies cover your setup and check the match rate after the first uploads.

03Why isn't free signup enough to optimize on?

Because free signups outnumber upgrades by twenty to one or worse, and the ratio differs enough by channel that signup counts actively mislead about which traffic is worth buying.

04How does the identifier survive to first payment?

It doesn't, as a cookie — the gap is too long. It has to be written onto the first paid subscription in your billing system at the point of ad click, where it lives as a field rather than as browser storage.

05What does Google Ads need to accept the conversion?

A click identifier inside the 90-day window, a conversion action name that matches one configured in the account, a conversion timestamp for when the outcome happened, and a value. Read the match rate after uploading — a file can upload perfectly and match nothing.

06How long does this take to build?

Two to four days for the implementation, plus a closed reconciliation window before we'd call it verified. Capture and persistence are the fiddly parts; the import itself is usually an afternoon.

07Can I do this myself?

Yes, and the reference pages on this site cover the mechanics. The part that's genuinely tedious rather than clever is keeping gclid, gbraid and wbraid alive through multi-step forms and a funnel longer than any attribution window, which fails silently at every stage.
