How to track freemium signup to paid upgrade for Amazon Ads

Freemium converts at low single digits and the upgrade arrives months after the signup, which makes signups an abundant, cheap and almost uninformative optimisation target. The whole measurement problem is that the signal you have lots of predicts almost nothing about the one you need. On Amazon Ads the specifics that matter are the click identifier (no click identifier for on-Amazon conversions), the import mechanism (the Amazon Ads conversion API, for off-Amazon destinations only), and Deduplication only arises for off-Amazon conversions where both a tag and a server event exist. The chain only works end to end if the identifier is captured on landing and stored on the first paid subscription in your billing system — no cookie survives the gap between ad click and first payment.

The problem

Where this funnel usually breaks

Amazon Ads · Freemium → paid-specific issues
Leak #01

Optimising on free signups

Freemium signup-to-paid varies by a factor of several across channels, so bidding on signups reliably finds the channel with the worst rate — it produces the cheapest signups.

Leak #02

Attribution windows shorter than the upgrade lag

A user who upgrades in month four falls outside every default window, so the campaign shows zero revenue while producing all of it.

Leak #03

Activation defined as something everybody does

If your activation event fires for ninety percent of signups, it is not a filter and it predicts nothing.

Leak #04

Free-tier cost ignored

Every free user costs infrastructure. A channel producing enormous free volume and no upgrades is not cheap, it is expensive.

Specific to Amazon Ads × Freemium → paid

Amazon Ads and freemium software: usually a poor fit, keep it minimal

On Amazon Ads, a freemium upgrade can only be measured off-Amazon: send the first payment from billing through Amazon's conversion API for campaigns, typically DSP, that drive traffic to your own signup page. There is no per-click identifier to store on the account, so expect aggregated reporting rather than per-user attribution.

Most freemium software isn't sold on Amazon, so Sponsored Products and Sponsored Brands rarely apply. What remains is Amazon DSP or other off-Amazon placements sending people to your signup page, which can make sense for consumer apps whose users shop heavily on Amazon, such as household budgeting or smart-home companion apps. For B2B or developer freemium, skip it.

Matching is the weak point. With no click identifier you can write onto the account, the first payment has to be matched on hashed contact data, and the months between signup and upgrade put most payments beyond any window Amazon will credit. Ask Amazon which conversion events and lookback windows apply to your DSP line items before promising anyone per-campaign upgrade numbers.

A sane minimal setup sends the free signup through Amazon's conversion API as the optimization signal for DSP, sends the first payment with its value for reporting, and records a source field on the account so billing can show whether Amazon-sourced cohorts ever pay. If that cohort stays small after two or three months, the answer is a media decision, not more tracking work.

Architecture

The exact event sequence

Five stages. Nothing breaks technically. The funnel simply outlives every attribution window, and the abundant early signal is the least predictive one. The identifier has to survive all of them.

  1. Step 1

    Ad click

The identifier arrives. It has to be written onto the account, because a cookie will not survive to the upgrade.

  2. Step 2

    Free signup

Cheap, abundant, and converting at low single digits.

  3. Step 3

    Activation

The specific action that predicts payment for your product. Not 'signed up' and not 'logged in twice'.

  4. Step 4

    Limit reached

The moment the free tier stops being enough, which is what actually triggers upgrades.

  5. Step 5

    First payment

Frequently months after the click that produced the signup.

Diagnostic sequence

What's specific to Amazon Ads

The funnel logic above is the same wherever you advertise. These are the parts that change because it's Amazon Ads.

  1. 1

Click identifier: no click identifier for on-Amazon conversions

This is the important thing and most guidance skips it: Amazon Ads spans two very different situations. Sponsored ad formats driving to an Amazon listing produce conversions Amazon measures itself, with no click identifier passed to you and no per-order join available. Amazon DSP driving to your own site is a different case, where a click identifier can reach your landing page and be captured like any other network's.

  2. 2

Import mechanism: conversion upload, where applicable

Where you are driving to your own site, conversions can be sent back. Where you are driving to an Amazon listing, the transaction happens inside Amazon's checkout and there is nothing to send — Amazon's own attribution reporting is the only view available and it is aggregated.

  3. 3

    Deduplication

For on-Amazon purchases the question does not apply, because you are not measuring the conversion at all — Amazon is. For traffic to your own site the usual shared-identifier pattern applies.

  4. 4

    Window and timing

Amazon's attribution windows differ by ad product and by whether the conversion happens on Amazon or on your site. Establish which product and which destination you are reporting on before comparing any figure.

  5. 5

    The Amazon Ads gotcha

The structural limit is worth stating plainly to anyone selling you on this: for sales that complete inside Amazon, per-order click attribution does not exist and cannot be built. Amazon Attribution gives aggregated, delayed reporting. Anyone offering per-order joins on Amazon-completed sales is describing something that is not available.

Source-of-truth validation

How to prove the chain works

One real journey, followed all the way, then a reconciliation. Neither on its own is enough.

Source of truthyour billing system, joined to the account's signup date
  • A live Amazon Ads ad clicked, and the identifier confirmed present on the landing URL.
  • The same identifier confirmed on the first paid subscription in your billing system after a full real journey through every step.
  • First payment confirmed arriving at Amazon Ads, verified by Amazon's own attribution reporting for on-Amazon sales, and your normal reconciliation for off-Amazon conversions.
  • Your billing system, joined to the account's signup date reconciled against Amazon Ads per record over a fully closed window.
  • The same reconciliation repeated 30 days later.

Straight talk

When this doesn't apply to you

Worth checking before you build anything, because two of these are common and both mean the work isn't worth doing.

  • If your free tier exists for distribution or brand reasons rather than as a funnel, measure it on usage and stop — forcing a revenue model onto it produces a bad number and a worse decision.
  • If all your Amazon Ads spend drives to Amazon listings, there is no conversion tracking build here — only a reporting exercise inside Amazon's own tools, and it is worth knowing that before commissioning anything.
  • If your cycle from click to first payment regularly exceeds the import window, the final event can't drive bidding whatever you build. Optimize toward activation, where activation is an event that fewer than half of signups reach instead and use the later data for budget decisions rather than for bidding.
  • If almost none of your paid upgrades carry a click identifier today, that's the whole project. Fix capture first — the import is the easy half and no tooling rescues a record with nothing to reference.

What you get

The implementation, on Amazon Ads

Item 01

Capture the Amazon click identifier, where one exists on landing

For off-Amazon destinations, capture and persist the click identifier as with any network. For on-Amazon destinations there is nothing to capture.

Item 02

Persist it to the first paid subscription in your billing system

Write the identifier onto the account at signup, not into a cookie. The gap between signup and upgrade is measured in months.

Item 03

Send first payment from the record

Your billing system on first payment, with the identifier carried from the original signup through the account record. Dispatched to Amazon Ads through the Amazon Ads conversion API, for off-Amazon destinations only.

Item 04

Deduplicate and reverse

Deduplication only arises for off-amazon conversions where both a tag and a server event exist. Cancellations inside the first billing period reverse.

Got questions?

The honestanswers.

No buzzwords, no upsell. If we don’t know, we say so.

01Can Amazon Ads attribute a SaaS subscription upgrade?

Only off-Amazon, through Amazon's conversion tooling, and only in aggregate. A months-later upgrade usually falls outside the window, so cohort reporting in your own billing data is the reliable view.

02Is Amazon Attribution useful for a freemium app?

Amazon Attribution measures how outside media drives sales of listings on Amazon, so it only helps if your paid plan is sold through Amazon. For a signup on your own site it doesn't apply.

03Why isn't free signup enough to optimize on?

Because free signups outnumber upgrades by twenty to one or worse, and the ratio differs enough by channel that signup counts actively mislead about which traffic is worth buying.

04How does the identifier survive to first payment?

It doesn't, as a cookie — the gap is too long. It has to be written onto the first paid subscription in your billing system at the point of ad click, where it lives as a field rather than as browser storage.

05What does Amazon Ads need to accept the conversion?

For off-Amazon conversions: an event, a timestamp, a value and the click identifier. For on-Amazon conversions: nothing, because the measurement is not yours to do.

06How long does this take to build?

Two to four days for the implementation, plus a closed reconciliation window before we'd call it verified. Capture and persistence are the fiddly parts; the import itself is usually an afternoon.

07Can I do this myself?

Yes, and the reference pages on this site cover the mechanics. The part that's genuinely tedious rather than clever is keeping the Amazon click identifier, where one exists alive through multi-step forms and a funnel longer than any attribution window, which fails silently at every stage.
