How to track self-serve signup to sales-assisted contract for Amazon Ads

Hybrid go-to-market means the same customer can appear twice: once as a card payment and again as a signed contract months later. Counting both is the standard error, and it double-counts exactly your most valuable accounts. On Amazon Ads the specifics that matter are the click identifier (no click identifier for on-Amazon conversions), the import mechanism (the Amazon Ads conversion API, for off-Amazon destinations only), and Deduplication only arises for off-Amazon conversions where both a tag and a server event exist. The chain only works end to end if the identifier is captured on landing and stored on the signed contract in your CRM — no cookie survives the gap between ad click and contract signed.

The problem

Where this funnel usually breaks

Amazon Ads · Self-serve → sales assisted-specific issues
Leak #01

The same account counted twice

Once as a self-serve conversion and again as a closed-won deal. Cost per acquisition halves on paper and nothing changed in reality.

Leak #02

Contract value reported without removing the self-serve revenue

The contract frequently supersedes the subscription, so adding them overstates the account.

Leak #03

Two teams claiming one account

Marketing counts the self-serve signup, sales counts the contract, and leadership sees two customers.

Leak #04

Long procurement outliving every window

Security review and legal can add a quarter on their own.

Specific to Amazon Ads × Self-serve → sales assisted

Amazon Ads hybrid funnels: no path from listing to contract

There is usually no Amazon Ads conversion to build for this funnel. Sponsored ads drive to Amazon listings, where Amazon measures the sale without passing a click identifier, and DSP to your own site can at most report the self-serve signup. Sales-assisted contracts stay entirely in your CRM.

Amazon Ads sells to shoppers. A hybrid software motion, self-serve on a card and a negotiated contract later, rarely buys Amazon media at all, and when it does it is DSP display aimed at business audiences, driving to the company's own site. In that case a click identifier can be captured on landing, and the self-serve subscription can be sent back as an off-Amazon conversion like any other network's.

Hardware with a software layer is the exception worth naming: a device sold through an Amazon listing, followed by a fleet or business contract signed directly with your sales team. The listing sale is Amazon's to measure in aggregate; the contract is yours, and no join exists between them. A business buyer who first tried a single unit bought on Amazon will appear in your CRM with no trace of that purchase unless you ask, so add a prior-purchase-channel question to the sales intake form.

Don't send contracts to Amazon's conversion API. Amazon's attribution windows are built around shopping behavior, and a contract arriving months later would either fail to match or credit a DSP impression that had nothing to do with procurement. The minimal, honest setup is self-serve signups from DSP traffic where you run it, and nothing else.

Architecture

The exact event sequence

Five stages. The break is at stage five: the contract usually replaces the self-serve revenue, and reporting both counts the same customer twice at two different values. The identifier has to survive all of them.

  1. Step 1

    Ad click

    Onto self-serve signup.

  2. Step 2

    Self-serve subscription

A card payment from an individual or a team.

  3. Step 3

    Growth inside the account

More seats, more usage, more internal advocates.

  4. Step 4

    Sales engagement

    Procurement, security review, contract negotiation.

  5. Step 5

    Contract signed

Replacing the self-serve subscription rather than adding to it.

Diagnostic sequence

What's specific to Amazon Ads

The funnel logic above is the same wherever you advertise. These are the parts that change because it's Amazon Ads.

  1. 1

Click identifier: no click identifier for on-Amazon conversions

This is the important thing and most guidance skips it: Amazon Ads spans two very different situations. Sponsored ad formats driving to an Amazon listing produce conversions Amazon measures itself, with no click identifier passed to you and no per-order join available. Amazon DSP driving to your own site is a different case, where a click identifier can reach your landing page and be captured like any other network's.

  2. 2

Import mechanism: conversion upload, where applicable

Where you are driving to your own site, conversions can be sent back. Where you are driving to an Amazon listing, the transaction happens inside Amazon's checkout and there is nothing to send — Amazon's own attribution reporting is the only view available and it is aggregated.

  3. 3

    Deduplication

For on-Amazon purchases the question does not apply, because you are not measuring the conversion at all — Amazon is. For traffic to your own site the usual shared-identifier pattern applies.

  4. 4

    Window and timing

Amazon's attribution windows differ by ad product and by whether the conversion happens on Amazon or on your site. Establish which product and which destination you are reporting on before comparing any figure.

  5. 5

    The Amazon Ads gotcha

The structural limit is worth stating plainly to anyone selling you on this: for sales that complete inside Amazon, per-order click attribution does not exist and cannot be built. Amazon Attribution gives aggregated, delayed reporting. Anyone offering per-order joins on Amazon-completed sales is describing something that is not available.

Source-of-truth validation

How to prove the chain works

One real journey, followed all the way, then a reconciliation. Neither on its own is enough.

Source of truthyour CRM and billing systems, reconciled to one record per account
  • A live Amazon Ads ad clicked, and the identifier confirmed present on the landing URL.
  • The same identifier confirmed on the signed contract in your CRM after a full real journey through every step.
  • Contract signed confirmed arriving at Amazon Ads, verified by Amazon's own attribution reporting for on-Amazon sales, and your normal reconciliation for off-Amazon conversions.
  • Your crm and billing systems, reconciled to one record per account reconciled against Amazon Ads per record over a fully closed window.
  • The same reconciliation repeated 30 days later.

Straight talk

When this doesn't apply to you

Worth checking before you build anything, because two of these are common and both mean the work isn't worth doing.

  • If you sell either purely self-serve or purely through sales, there is no hybrid double-count to avoid.
  • If all your Amazon Ads spend drives to Amazon listings, there is no conversion tracking build here — only a reporting exercise inside Amazon's own tools, and it is worth knowing that before commissioning anything.
  • If your cycle from click to contract signed regularly exceeds the import window, the final event can't drive bidding whatever you build. Optimize toward accounts, deduplicated across both systems, counted once at their current value instead and use the later data for budget decisions rather than for bidding.
  • If almost none of your signed contracts carry a click identifier today, that's the whole project. Fix capture first — the import is the easy half and no tooling rescues a record with nothing to reference.

What you get

The implementation, on Amazon Ads

Item 01

Capture the Amazon click identifier, where one exists on landing

For off-Amazon destinations, capture and persist the click identifier as with any network. For on-Amazon destinations there is nothing to capture.

Item 02

Persist it to the signed contract in your CRM

Store the identifier on the account so the self-serve signup and the eventual contract are recognisably the same customer.

Item 03

Send contract signed from the record

Your CRM at contract signature, with the account's prior self-serve revenue removed from the reported figure. Dispatched to Amazon Ads through the Amazon Ads conversion API, for off-Amazon destinations only.

Item 04

Deduplicate and reverse

Deduplication only arises for off-amazon conversions where both a tag and a server event exist. Cancelled contracts reverse; a reverted account returning to self-serve is a downgrade, not a loss.

Got questions?

The honestanswers.

No buzzwords, no upsell. If we don’t know, we say so.

01Can Amazon Ads attribute a B2B contract that followed an Amazon purchase?

No. On-Amazon sales pass no click identifier and allow no per-order join. Ask about prior purchase channel at sales intake instead.

02Should Amazon DSP optimize on self-serve signups?

If DSP drives to your own site, the self-serve subscription is the only realistic conversion to send. Contracts are too late and too few.

03Why isn't self-serve subscription enough to optimize on?

Because self-serve subscriptions and signed contracts are frequently the same customer at two moments, and summing them inflates exactly the accounts you most want to understand.

04How does the identifier survive to contract signed?

It doesn't, as a cookie — the gap is too long. It has to be written onto the signed contract in your CRM at the point of ad click, where it lives as a field rather than as browser storage.

05What does Amazon Ads need to accept the conversion?

For off-Amazon conversions: an event, a timestamp, a value and the click identifier. For on-Amazon conversions: nothing, because the measurement is not yours to do.

06How long does this take to build?

Two to four days for the implementation, plus a closed reconciliation window before we'd call it verified. Capture and persistence are the fiddly parts; the import itself is usually an afternoon.

07Can I do this myself?

Yes, and the reference pages on this site cover the mechanics. The part that's genuinely tedious rather than clever is keeping the Amazon click identifier, where one exists alive through multi-step forms and an account that converts twice in two different systems, which fails silently at every stage.
