Google Ads says you're converting, but it's counting people reading your Elfsight reviews.
Elfsight's Google Reviews widget can send events like Widget Viewed and Review Viewed straight into GA4, and once someone marks one as a key event and imports it as a primary conversion, Google Ads starts bidding for review readers instead of callers. Daycare centers, life insurance agents, coaches and vacation rental hosts who put the widget on their ad landing page are the ones who get caught. Fixed means the reviews still do their job as proof, while your ads learn only from the tour requests, quotes, consultations and bookings that actually pay.

Elfsight Google Reviews · what breaks
What goes wrong with the Elfsight Google Reviews widget
- 01
"Google Ads shows conversions, but the phone's quiet"
Elfsight's built-in Google Analytics setting sends review events to GA4 automatically when GA4 sits directly on your site. If Review Viewed or Widget Viewed gets marked as a key event and set to primary in Google Ads, a visitor who just looks at your reviews counts as a result, and Smart Bidding buys more people who read and leave.
- 02
"Our review numbers look twice as good as they should"
Elfsight's own docs say that if both Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager are set up, the widget's events go to both. A site with a hard-coded GA4 tag plus a GTM tag forwarding the same Elfsight events can record every review interaction twice, and any report or audience built on those numbers is inflated.
- 03
"Unhappy clients are showing up as leads"
When a visitor answers "No" to the widget's review request, Elfsight shows your custom message, which can include an email link. A catch-all mailto or link-click trigger in your container can log that complaint as an inquiry, so a parent upset about a daycare billing mix-up looks like a new enrollment lead.
- 04
"I can't tell if the reviews help my ads book anything"
Elfsight's review events stop at reading, opening a review or clicking through to Google, and we found no Meta or Google Ads setting in its docs, only Google Analytics and Tag Manager. Without tying review engagement to real inquiries, a lice clinic or a career coach can't see whether that widget earns its spot above the form.
Elfsight Google Reviews · the fix
What changes — Elfsight Google Reviews
Bidding learns from inquiries, not review reading
Elfsight events stay in GA4 as secondary signals for reporting and audiences, while Google Ads and Meta optimize on the calls, forms and bookings your page actually produces.
One path, one count
Each Elfsight event reaches GA4 through either the direct tag or your GTM container, never both, so review engagement reports match what visitors did.
Proof the reviews pay their way
Inquiries are compared by whether the visitor opened your reviews first, so you can decide whether the widget, its layout or its placement deserves the space.
Elfsight Google Reviews · architecture
What the Elfsight Google Reviews widget actually lets you do
Everything here comes from Elfsight's own help center and product pages. Where the docs are thin, we test rather than assume.
- 1
Install code on your page
A platform script plus a div carrying your widget ID, pasted into a Custom HTML block, so on most sites it renders inside your own page where your tags can see it. Wix is the exception: Elfsight notes Wix sites are built on iframes and documents a separate method to avoid them.
- 2
Built-in Google Analytics setting
Settings tab, Add Event. Reviews widgets offer Widget Viewed, Review Viewed, Review Popup Opened and Review Source Opened, with editable names and fixed parameters such as source, app and widget ID.
- 3
Direct GA4: automatic
With GA4 installed on the site, Elfsight says events arrive with no extra setup, which is exactly how they slip into key events unnoticed.
- 4
Google Tag Manager: manual
Events aren't forwarded on their own. You build a Custom Event trigger matching the widget's event name and a GA4 Event tag, which is also where we'd route them elsewhere.
- 5
No ad platform or server-side connection
We found no Meta Pixel, Google Ads or server-side option in Elfsight's docs. Write-review events are listed for All-in-One Reviews, so we confirm what your Google Reviews widget offers in the editor.
Elfsight Google Reviews · diagnose
Where Elfsight Google Reviews tracking breaks, in diagnostic order
Start with Google Ads itself, because the costliest fault is a review event quietly steering your bids.
- 01
Search Google Ads primary conversions for Elfsight event names
Including any renamed ones from the widget's settings.
- 02
Check whether GA4 is installed directly and through GTM
If both exist and GTM also forwards Elfsight's events, each one lands in GA4 twice.
- 03
Test the review request's No path
Click the email link and watch which triggers fire.
- 04
Confirm how the widget is embedded
On Wix, an iframe embed changes what your page tags can see.
- 05
Check the real inquiry carries the click ID
Submit a test lead from an ad-tagged URL and open the record.
Elfsight Google Reviews · prove
The QA evidence — Elfsight Google Reviews
Every check runs against the published widget on the page your ads send traffic to; the Elfsight editor preview proves nothing about GA4 or Google Ads.
Source of truth
Your own inquiry and booking records (enrollment list, policy applications, client bookings or reservations), with Elfsight's widget events in GA4 Realtime as the check on the review side
- Each Elfsight event seen exactly once in GA4 Realtime during a test visit.
- No Elfsight event set as a primary conversion in Google Ads.
- The review request's No message and email link firing no lead event.
- One test inquiry from an ad-tagged URL with the click ID stored on the record.
- Qualified and booked events received by Google Ads and Meta with a shared event ID.
- A closed month of real inquiries matched against both platforms.
- Repeated 30 days later and after any change to the widget's layout or event settings.

Elfsight Google Reviews · when not to buy
When you don't need this for your Elfsight widget
Sometimes the widget is harmless and the honest answer is to leave it alone.
- If no Elfsight event is a key event in GA4 or a conversion in Google Ads, the widget isn't hurting your bidding.
- If you don't run paid ads and only want to see how many visitors read reviews, Elfsight's GA4 events in Realtime and Engagement reports are enough.
- If your only fault is GA4 installed twice, removing one copy is a short job and we'll tell you to do it yourself.
- If your rental bookings come mostly through Airbnb or Vrbo, or your daycare fills through word of mouth, the widget's pull on ad bidding is minor and we'll tell you so.
Elfsight Google Reviews · what we deliver
The event map around the Elfsight Google Reviews widget
Review engagement
Elfsight's Review Viewed and Review Popup Opened, named clearly and kept as secondary signals in GA4. Never a primary Google Ads conversion.
Inquiry
The form, call or booking request on the page holding the widget, captured with the Google or Meta click ID at that moment, since the widget never sees it.
Qualified
A tour scheduled, a quote requested, a consultation held or a reservation confirmed, marked in your own system and sent to both ad platforms.
Enrolled, bound or booked
The enrollment, written policy, paid coaching package or stay from your records. This is the event bidding should chase.
Paid
The tuition, first premium, coaching fee or stay total from your records, sent through a first-party server container so a blocked browser tag can't lose it.
Excluded on purpose
Review Source Opened clicks out to Google, review request Yes and No answers, and the No message's email link. None of them count as leads anywhere.
FAQ
Elfsight Google Reviews questions, answered
No. It reports engagement, such as Widget Viewed, Review Viewed, Review Popup Opened and Review Source Opened, to Google Analytics. Your leads still come from the forms, calls and bookings around it, and those need their own tracking.
Not as primary conversions. Google Ads can mark conversions based on GA4 key events as secondary, and secondary actions show in the All conversions column without being used for bidding. That's where review events belong, and we check each one is set that way.
Usually GA4 is installed directly and through Google Tag Manager. Elfsight's docs say that when both are set up, events go to both, so one path has to go.
Its docs describe Google Analytics and Tag Manager only, and we found no Meta setting. Through your GTM container they could reach Meta, but we'd use them for audiences at most, never as the event Meta optimizes on.
Elfsight lists write-review events for its All-in-One Reviews widget. On the Google Reviews widget we check the editor's event list first, and either way those clicks are excluded from lead counts.
Yes, but how it's installed matters. Elfsight says Wix sites are built on iframes and offers a Custom Code method that avoids them, which needs a Wix Premium plan and a connected custom domain.
