Square says your emails made the sale. Your ad account says nothing happened.
You run Google or Facebook ads, a new client walks in and taps a card, and Square Marketing later files that sale under "attributable sales" because they viewed one of its emails and bought in store within 14 days. The ad that brought them in gets nothing, so Google and Meta keep bidding blind. We store each ad click on the Square customer profile and send counter and Square Online payments back to the ad platforms from Square's own records.

Square Marketing · what breaks
What goes wrong when Square Marketing meets your ads
- 01
"My ads bring people in, but the sale happens at the register"
A walk-in who saw your Instagram ad pays with a tap on Square POS. No browser, no Pixel, so Meta and Google log a click and never a purchase, and bidding chases clickers instead of paying clients.
- 02
"Square Marketing takes credit for customers my ads found"
Square credits revenue to anyone who viewed a Square Marketing email or Facebook campaign and bought in store within 14 days. A Google-ad client who opts in at checkout, opens your next email and comes back becomes email revenue, and the ad that found them looks dead.
- 03
"The sign-up form fills my list, but I can't see which ad sent them"
Square's embedded form and hosted sign-up page fill your Customer Directory, but Square documents no conversion event for either. Your join-the-list coupon ad can't show what each subscriber cost or whether they ever bought.
- 04
"Square says my Facebook campaign made money, but I never paid for it"
Square's Facebook campaigns are free posts to your business page, yet its report credits them with in-store sales from people who viewed them. Those figures read like ad results, so your paid campaigns get judged against unpaid posts and cut for the wrong reason.
Square Marketing · the fix
What changes after the fix — Square Marketing
Ads get credit for the clients they bring in
First purchases from ad-driven visitors reach Meta and Google, matched on hashed email or phone from the Square profile, so bidding learns from people who paid.
Two clean numbers: new from ads, back from emails
A first visit is credited to the ad that earned it. Repeat visits after a Square Marketing email or text stay in Square's report and out of your cost per new client.
List-building ads judged on buyers, not clicks
Each sign-up from an ad-tagged page carries its click ID into the customer record, so a coupon-for-email campaign is judged on subscribers who later paid.
Square Marketing · architecture
What Square actually gives you to work with
Square Marketing itself has no ad-platform tracking. The useful hooks sit elsewhere in Square, all from Square's own documentation.
- 1
Campaign reports in Square Dashboard
Opens, clicks and purchases per campaign, plus attributable sales: viewed an email or Facebook campaign, bought in store within 14 days. Good for retention, not ads.
- 2
Embedded sign-up form and hosted sign-up page
Pasted HTML widget on your site, or a Square-hosted page with its own link. Square documents no conversion event or thank-you redirect for either, so we confirm what fires on submit.
- 3
Square Online tracking tools
Fields for a Google Analytics ID, a Facebook Pixel ID, a Pinterest tag and custom head or end-of-body code; connecting Meta for Business installs the Pixel automatically. Whether pasted code runs on checkout gets tested.
- 4
Square webhooks
customer.created (which also fires when profiles merge), payment.updated, order.updated and refund events, per Square's developer reference, plus customer custom attributes for storing a click ID. Together they let a card tapped at your counter reach the ad platforms.
- 5
No documented Google Ads, Tag Manager or Conversions API link
Square's Tracking Tools article lists neither Google Ads nor Tag Manager, and its Meta for Business article covers the Pixel and catalog sync only, with no Conversions API.
Square Marketing · diagnose
Where Square Marketing tracking breaks, in diagnostic order
We start at the counter, because that's where most Square sales happen and where the ad trail usually ends.
- 01
Check whether counter payments attach to a customer profile
No profile means no email or phone to match against an ad click.
- 02
Look for the click ID on a fresh profile
Sign up once from an ad-tagged URL, then check the record through Square's API or a Customer Directory export, since hidden custom attributes don't show on screen.
- 03
Compare Square's attributable sales with first visits
Find the new clients your ads brought in that Square has filed under an email campaign.
- 04
Count the Pixels on Square Online
The Meta for Business connection plus a hand-entered Pixel ID or pasted code can fire every online order twice, so we check Events Manager for doubles.
- 05
Separate Facebook posts from Facebook ads
Square's Facebook campaign figures get set aside before anyone compares return on ad spend.
Square Marketing · prove
The QA evidence — Square Marketing
Run on a real sign-up and a real card payment at your counter, not a test profile typed in by hand.
Source of truth
Square payment and Customer Directory records: completed payments by date, linked to the customer profile and the click ID stored on it
- One sign-up from an ad-tagged link, with the click ID present on that Square customer profile.
- One in-store payment on that profile, received by the server container from Square's webhook.
- Exactly one purchase in Meta Events Manager and one in Google Ads for that payment, sharing an event ID.
- A refund issued in Square and reversed at both platforms.
- A repeat visit after a Square Marketing email confirmed absent from acquisition conversions.
- First visits matched record by record over a closed month, then again 30 days later.

Square Marketing · when not to buy
When you don't need this on Square Marketing
Plenty of Square sellers are fine as they are. Here's when we'd tell you to leave it alone.
- If you don't run paid ads and Square Marketing is your only channel, its campaign reports already answer the question you're asking.
- If nearly every client is a regular, like a barbershop with a full book of weekly cuts, retention numbers matter more than ad attribution.
- If most walk-ins pay without giving an email or phone, there's nothing on the sale to match to an ad. That's a checkout habit to fix first, not a tracking build.
- If the only problem is a duplicate Pixel on Square Online, removing one is a quick settings change you can make yourself.
Square Marketing · what we deliver
The event map on Square Marketing
Sign-up from an ad
A sign-up form on your ad landing page that writes the customer to Square through its API, with the click ID stored as a Square customer custom attribute. We confirm first whether Square's own embedded form can carry it.
Customer profile created
Read from Square's customer.created webhook. Merged profiles are checked so one client isn't counted twice.
Coupon claimed
The ad offer or a Square Marketing coupon, logged as a leading signal and never as revenue.
First paid visit
The conversion: a completed Square payment on a profile that came from an ad, valued at the real ticket rather than a flat number.
Refund
Square refund events reversed at Meta and Google so returns don't inflate return on ad spend.
Repeat visit after an email or text
Left in Square Marketing's own report and excluded from acquisition conversions.
Written guarantee
95%+ tracking accuracy
Measured against Square payment and Customer Directory records: completed payments by date, linked to the customer profile and the click ID stored on it. Miss it and we keep working at no cost.

FAQ
Square Marketing questions, answered
No. It reports on its own email, text and Facebook campaigns. Ad conversions come from Square Online's Pixel and Analytics settings for web orders, and Square's webhooks for counter payments.
Square's help center defines them as sales from customers who viewed a Square Marketing email or Facebook campaign, then bought in store within 14 days. They show your emails' pull on existing customers, not which ad found a new one.
Not by default, because no browser is involved. They can once the payment is sent from Square's records through Meta's Conversions API or a Google Ads offline import, matched on the customer's hashed email or phone.
Not on its own. Square doesn't document a conversion event for the embedded form or hosted sign-up page, so we add one on your site and pass the click ID into the Square customer record.
Yes, if you spend real money on Google or Meta and clients leave an email or phone at checkout, since that's what lets a counter payment match an ad. If they don't, fix the checkout prompt first.
No. It keeps sending your emails, texts and coupons. We only change how the sales those campaigns and your ads produce get reported.
