Leak #01

The GCLID never reaches Salesforce

The single most common cause. Lead conversion is where identifiers die. A custom field on Lead that has no mapped counterpart on Contact or Opportunity is silently discarded when the Lead converts, and nobody notices until months of data are unattributable.

The identifier is lost at lead conversion

This one failure explains most broken Salesforce attribution. The data is captured correctly, then thrown away by a mapping nobody configured.

Leak #03

The conversion action is the wrong type

Uploads against a standard website conversion action fail. The action has to be created as 'Import' — and existing actions cannot be converted, so this is discovered late and requires starting a new action with no history.

Leak #04

Nothing reconciles afterwards

An upload that succeeds is not an upload that matched. Google Ads reports uploads in Goals → Conversions → Uploads, with rows accepted and rows failed. A green result means the file parsed, not that the clicks matched. The number to watch is how many conversions actually appear against campaigns afterwards.

Architecture

How Salesforce and Google Ads actually connect

Two systems that know nothing about each other. Everything below exists to give them one shared reference.

  1. Step 1

    Salesforce holds the truth

    The opportunity carries the amount, stage and close date. Because Leads convert into Contacts, Accounts and Opportunities, the identifier must be mapped through the conversion or it is dropped exactly at the moment the record becomes valuable.

  2. Step 2

    Google Ads needs a click to match

    Google Ads matches an uploaded conversion back to a click using the GCLID. The conversion action must be created as an import type — an upload against a website-tag conversion action is rejected. Uploads must also land inside Google's window: the click has to be within the last 90 days.

  3. Step 3

    The identifier is the bridge

    The GCLID, captured at the visit and carried into the Salesforce Lead or Opportunity. Without it there is nothing to join on and no tool fixes that.

  4. Step 4

    The event source decides reliability

    Fire on the transition into Closed Won, carrying the amount and the identifier. Note that Salesforce's own advertising integrations vary in what they support — build on the record, not on a connector that might change.

  5. Step 5

    Deduplication at the destination

    Google deduplicates on the combination of GCLID, conversion action and conversion time. Uploading the same click twice against the same action at the same timestamp is rejected rather than double-counted, but uploading it against a second conversion action counts twice — which is how most double-counting here actually happens.

    If the identifier is not on the Opportunity, the field mapping is missing. This takes five minutes and rules out the most likely cause outright.

    In Google Ads, Goals → Conversions → Uploads shows every upload with its error rows. Read the errors rather than the success count; a file can import successfully with most rows rejected.

01Why aren't my Salesforce conversions showing in Google Ads?

Almost always because the GCLID never reached the Salesforce Lead or Opportunity. Lead conversion is where identifiers die. A custom field on Lead that has no mapped counterpart on Contact or Opportunity is silently discarded when the Lead converts, and nobody notices until months of data are unattributable. Measure coverage before debugging the dispatch.

02What identifier does Google Ads need?

The GCLID — the click ID Google appends to your landing page URL when auto-tagging is on. For iOS App campaigns and some Shopping traffic you will see GBRAID or WBRAID instead, and those behave differently: WBRAID cannot be used with user-provided data in the same way, and neither joins to an individual user. Enhanced conversions for leads is the alternative path, matching on hashed email or phone rather than a click ID, and it is the right choice when GCLID coverage is poor.

03Where should the event come from?

A Salesforce flow, Apex trigger or scheduled export on StageName change. Fire on the transition into Closed Won, carrying the amount and the identifier. Note that Salesforce's own advertising integrations vary in what they support — build on the record, not on a connector that might change.

04How do I know it worked?

Google Ads reports uploads in Goals → Conversions → Uploads, with rows accepted and rows failed. A green result means the file parsed, not that the clicks matched. The number to watch is how many conversions actually appear against campaigns afterwards.
