Salesforce → LinkedIn · Conversion tracking
Connecting Salesforce to LinkedIn Ads
Salesforce holds the opportunity, the amount and the close — the only place the actual revenue outcome is recorded. LinkedIn is where B2B advertisers pay the highest cost per click in the industry, which makes an unmeasured conversion more expensive here than almost anywhere. The join between them succeeds or fails on one thing: whether the li_fat_id click identifier reaches the Salesforce Lead or Opportunity before the conversion happens, because LinkedIn can only match a conversion it can tie back to a click it recognizes.

Why this join usually fails
The li_fat_id click identifier never reaches Salesforce
The single most common cause. Lead conversion is where identifiers die. A custom field on Lead that has no mapped counterpart on Contact or Opportunity is silently discarded when the Lead converts, and nobody notices until months of data are unattributable.
The identifier is lost at lead conversion
This one failure explains most broken Salesforce attribution. The data is captured correctly, then thrown away by a mapping nobody configured.
Long B2B cycles against LinkedIn's windows
LinkedIn's attribution windows are configurable and finite, while B2B deals close in quarters. A conversion that matters commercially frequently falls outside the window that LinkedIn will credit, and that gap has to be reported rather than argued about.
Nothing reconciles afterwards
An upload that succeeds is not an upload that matched. Campaign Manager reports conversions against each defined conversion action with its own window. A successful API call is not a matched conversion — reconcile LinkedIn's reported conversions against your CRM for the same window, and expect a gap wherever your sales cycle exceeds the attribution setting.
Architecture
How Salesforce and LinkedIn actually connect
Two systems that know nothing about each other. Everything below exists to give them one shared reference.
Step 1
Salesforce holds the truth
The opportunity carries the amount, stage and close date. Because Leads convert into Contacts, Accounts and Opportunities, the identifier must be mapped through the conversion or it is dropped exactly at the moment the record becomes valuable.
Step 2
LinkedIn Ads needs a click to match
LinkedIn matches server events on the click identifier where present and hashed user data otherwise. Conversions have to be defined in Campaign Manager before anything can be sent against them, and the definition includes the attribution window and counting rule.
Step 3
The identifier is the bridge
The li_fat_id click identifier, captured at the visit and carried into the Salesforce Lead or Opportunity. Without it there is nothing to join on and no tool fixes that.
Step 4
The event source decides reliability
Fire on the transition into Closed Won, carrying the amount and the identifier. Note that Salesforce's own advertising integrations vary in what they support — build on the record, not on a connector that might change.
Step 5
Deduplication at the destination
LinkedIn deduplicates on an event identifier shared between the Insight Tag and the Conversions API. Running both without pairing them doubles every conversion, which on LinkedIn's cost per click is an expensive error to leave running.
Diagnose it honestly
Working vs. broken, side by side
Both states look identical from the LinkedIn dashboard, which is why this runs for months before anyone notices.
Normal — not a fault
The li_fat_id click identifier present on the opportunity
Visible on the record itself in Salesforce, not merely captured somewhere on the site.
Sent from a Salesforce flow, Apex trigger or scheduled export on StageName change
Server-side, so it does not depend on the customer's browser still being there.
Deduplicated correctly
LinkedIn deduplicates on an event identifier shared between the Insight Tag and the Conversions API. Running both without pairing them doubles every conversion, which on LinkedIn's cost per click is an expensive error to leave running.
Reconciles with the source
LinkedIn's count and Salesforce's records agree within a few percent over a closed window.
Actually broken
The li_fat_id click identifier missing on most records
Lead conversion is where identifiers die. A custom field on Lead that has no mapped counterpart on Contact or Opportunity is silently discarded when the Lead converts, and nobody notices until months of data are unattributable.
Sent from the browser
Anyone who closes the tab, blocks the script or converts without a page load is invisible. This one failure explains most broken Salesforce attribution. The data is captured correctly, then thrown away by a mapping nobody configured.
Counted twice, or not at all
LinkedIn's attribution windows are configurable and finite, while B2B deals close in quarters. A conversion that matters commercially frequently falls outside the window that LinkedIn will credit, and that gap has to be reported rather than argued about.
Nobody has reconciled it
The dashboard shows a number and no one has compared it to Salesforce. A wrong number that nobody checks is indistinguishable from a right one.
Diagnostic sequence
Diagnostic order
Each step rules out a class of cause. Run them in order and the last one usually has a single explanation standing.
- 1
Count opportunitys carrying the li_fat_id click identifier
The ceiling on everything else. Do this before debugging anything downstream.
- 2
Follow one real conversion end to end
From the ad click through Salesforce and into LinkedIn.
- 3
Convert a test Lead and inspect the resulting Opportunity
If the identifier is not on the Opportunity, the field mapping is missing. This takes five minutes and rules out the most likely cause outright.
- 4
Confirm auto-tagging is on and the conversion is defined in Campaign Manager
Two settings, both easy to miss, and either one missing means nothing matches.
- 5
Read the match rate, not the success message
Campaign Manager reports conversions against each defined conversion action with its own window. A successful API call is not a matched conversion — reconcile LinkedIn's reported conversions against your CRM for the same window, and expect a gap wherever your sales cycle exceeds the attribution setting.
Source-of-truth validation
How it gets proven
Against Salesforce's own records, not against either platform's dashboard.
- The li_fat_id click identifier confirmed present on a live opportunity.
- A real conversion followed from click through Salesforce to LinkedIn.
- Auto-tagging confirmed enabled, the conversion defined in Campaign Manager, and deduplication verified on a real conversion.
- A test lead converted end to end with the identifier confirmed present on the resulting opportunity.
- Reconciled over a fully closed window, matched per record rather than on totals.
- Re-checked 30 days later.
Straight talk
When you don't need this
Worth reading before paying anyone, including us.
- If LinkedIn already reports conversions that reconcile against Salesforce's records within a few percent, this join is working and there is nothing to buy.
- Measure identifier coverage yourself first — pull your last hundred opportunitys and count how many carry the li_fat_id click identifier. Ten minutes, free, and it tells you whether any of this is worth doing.
- If your Salesforce instance is heavily customized and administered by another team, scope their availability before commissioning this — the build is usually blocked on admin access rather than on the tracking work.
- If you are not selling to businesses, LinkedIn's cost per click is very hard to justify and no measurement work changes that arithmetic.
Who this is for
Honest about who we’re a fit for.
We don’t take every project. Here’s how to tell if we’re right for you.
You’re a great fit if…
- You run Salesforce → LinkedIn (or are migrating to it)
- You spend $5K+/month on paid ads (Meta, Google, TikTok, Microsoft, LinkedIn)
- Your reported ROAS doesn’t match what your bank account is saying
- You want to own your tracking stack — no monthly SaaS fees forever
- You have 2–4 days to do this once and never think about it again
Skip us if…
- You spend less than $500/month on paid ads (browser pixel is fine)
- You want a SaaS dashboard with monthly fees forever (Triple Whale, Hyros)
- You need attribution modeling — we fix the data foundation, not multi-touch reports
- You want a 6-month enterprise consulting engagement (we ship in 4 days)
- You expect us to manage your ad accounts (we don’t — that’s a different service)
If you’re still unsure, book the call anyway— we’ll tell you straight whether we can help.
What working looks like
The li_fat_id click identifier on every opportunity
Server-sideCaptured before the conversion and stored where it survives.
Conversions arriving in LinkedIn
8+ EMQConversions appear in Campaign Manager against the campaign, with the value you sent, and feed LinkedIn's optimization and its company-level reporting.
Reconciled against the source
DedupedSalesforce's own records are the reference, not either dashboard.
What gets built
Identifier capture into Salesforce
Custom field on Lead, matching custom field on Contact and Opportunity, and the field mapping configured so conversion carries it across. Verify by converting a test lead and reading the resulting opportunity.
Event source: a Salesforce flow, Apex trigger or scheduled export on StageName change
Fire on the transition into Closed Won, carrying the amount and the identifier. Note that Salesforce's own advertising integrations vary in what they support — build on the record, not on a connector that might change.
Dispatch to LinkedIn
Server events to the LinkedIn Conversions API with the click identifier, hashed user data and a matched event identifier.
Reversals where they exist
An opportunity moved back out of Closed Won can be retracted, and enterprise pipelines do this often enough to be worth wiring.
Pick the package that fits your ad spend
Fixed-fee, no surprises. If your ad spend is meaningful,server-side tracking is what we recommend— it’s the only setup that survives iOS, Safari ITP and ad blockers.
Browser-side starter
Wires the join and verifies it on a live conversion. Honest about its ceiling where the source can only be read from the browser.
- The join built and tested end to end
- Verified on a real conversion
- Reconciled against the source's own records
- Written handover
1st-party server-side
Save $18K–$120K over 5 years vs Triple Whale / Hyros
The join built server-side from the source's own records, so it does not depend on a browser being present when the conversion happens.
- Events sourced from the system of record, not the browser
- Identifier captured and persisted end to end
- Deduplicated at the destination
- Reversals wired where the source supports them
- 95%+ accuracy guaranteed in writing
Full 1st-party stack
Every destination fed from one place, plus monitoring so a broken join surfaces in days rather than at quarter end.
- Everything in 1st-party server-side
- All paid destinations from one container
- CRM and offline loop
- Refunds and cancellations reversed everywhere
- Monitoring per destination

Got questions?
The honestanswers.
No buzzwords, no upsell. If we don’t know, we say so.
01Why aren't my Salesforce conversions showing in LinkedIn?
Almost always because the li_fat_id click identifier never reached the Salesforce Lead or Opportunity. Lead conversion is where identifiers die. A custom field on Lead that has no mapped counterpart on Contact or Opportunity is silently discarded when the Lead converts, and nobody notices until months of data are unattributable. Measure coverage before debugging the dispatch.
02What identifier does LinkedIn need?
The li_fat_id, appended to your landing page URL when auto-tagging is enabled on the LinkedIn account. LinkedIn also matches on hashed email and on company-level signals. Two things make this different from the consumer networks: auto-tagging is not always on, and LinkedIn's real strength is company-level reporting, so an event that carries no company context loses much of what makes the platform worth using.
03Where should the event come from?
A Salesforce flow, Apex trigger or scheduled export on StageName change. Fire on the transition into Closed Won, carrying the amount and the identifier. Note that Salesforce's own advertising integrations vary in what they support — build on the record, not on a connector that might change.
04How do I know it worked?
Campaign Manager reports conversions against each defined conversion action with its own window. A successful API call is not a matched conversion — reconcile LinkedIn's reported conversions against your CRM for the same window, and expect a gap wherever your sales cycle exceeds the attribution setting.
