HubSpot → LinkedIn · Conversion tracking

Connecting HubSpot to LinkedIn Ads

HubSpot knows which leads turned into money, weeks after the ad platforms have stopped paying attention. LinkedIn is where B2B advertisers pay the highest cost per click in the industry, which makes an unmeasured conversion more expensive here than almost anywhere. The join between them succeeds or fails on one thing: whether the li_fat_id click identifier reaches the HubSpot contact and deal before the conversion happens, because LinkedIn can only match a conversion it can tie back to a click it recognizes.

The problem

Why this join usually fails

HubSpot → LinkedIn-specific issues
Leak #01

The li_fat_id click identifier never reaches HubSpot

The single most common cause. The identifier has to be captured on the form and written to a contact property. HubSpot forms embedded in an iframe do not automatically see your page's cookies, so a hidden field has to be populated deliberately. Miss that and the contact is created clean, with nothing to join on ever again.

Leak #02

The deal closes long after the click

B2B sales cycles routinely run past the attribution window of every ad platform. Value uploaded on day 95 is value nobody will accept, so the timing question has to be answered before anything is built.

Leak #03

Long B2B cycles against LinkedIn's windows

LinkedIn's attribution windows are configurable and finite, while B2B deals close in quarters. A conversion that matters commercially frequently falls outside the window that LinkedIn will credit, and that gap has to be reported rather than argued about.

Leak #04

Nothing reconciles afterwards

An upload that succeeds is not an upload that matched. Campaign Manager reports conversions against each defined conversion action with its own window. A successful API call is not a matched conversion — reconcile LinkedIn's reported conversions against your CRM for the same window, and expect a gap wherever your sales cycle exceeds the attribution setting.

Architecture

How HubSpot and LinkedIn actually connect

Two systems that know nothing about each other. Everything below exists to give them one shared reference.

  1. Step 1

    HubSpot holds the truth

The deal carries the amount, the stage, the close date and the associated contact. That contact is where the original click identifier must live, because the deal is created much later by a salesperson who has no idea an ad was involved.

  2. Step 2

LinkedIn Ads needs a click to match

LinkedIn matches server events on the click identifier where present and hashed user data otherwise. Conversions have to be defined in Campaign Manager before anything can be sent against them, and the definition includes the attribution window and counting rule.

  3. Step 3

    The identifier is the bridge

The li_fat_id click identifier, captured at the visit and carried into the HubSpot contact and deal. Without it there is nothing to join on and no tool fixes that.

  4. Step 4

    The event source decides reliability

Trigger when the deal reaches Closed Won and send the deal amount with the identifier stored on the associated contact. Sending on form submission instead means you optimize toward form fills, which is exactly the behavior that fills a pipeline with unqualified leads.

  5. Step 5

    Deduplication at the destination

LinkedIn deduplicates on an event identifier shared between the Insight Tag and the Conversions API. Running both without pairing them doubles every conversion, which on LinkedIn's cost per click is an expensive error to leave running.

Diagnose it honestly

Working vs. broken, side by side

Both states look identical from the LinkedIn dashboard, which is why this runs for months before anyone notices.

Normal — not a fault

  • The li_fat_id click identifier present on the deal

Visible on the record itself in HubSpot, not merely captured somewhere on the site.

  • Sent from a HubSpot workflow or webhook on deal stage change

Server-side, so it does not depend on the customer's browser still being there.

  • Deduplicated correctly

LinkedIn deduplicates on an event identifier shared between the Insight Tag and the Conversions API. Running both without pairing them doubles every conversion, which on LinkedIn's cost per click is an expensive error to leave running.

  • Reconciles with the source

LinkedIn's count and HubSpot's records agree within a few percent over a closed window.

Actually broken

  • The li_fat_id click identifier missing on most records

The identifier has to be captured on the form and written to a contact property. HubSpot forms embedded in an iframe do not automatically see your page's cookies, so a hidden field has to be populated deliberately. Miss that and the contact is created clean, with nothing to join on ever again.

  • Sent from the browser

Anyone who closes the tab, blocks the script or converts without a page load is invisible. B2B sales cycles routinely run past the attribution window of every ad platform. Value uploaded on day 95 is value nobody will accept, so the timing question has to be answered before anything is built.

  • Counted twice, or not at all

LinkedIn's attribution windows are configurable and finite, while B2B deals close in quarters. A conversion that matters commercially frequently falls outside the window that LinkedIn will credit, and that gap has to be reported rather than argued about.

  • Nobody has reconciled it

The dashboard shows a number and no one has compared it to HubSpot. A wrong number that nobody checks is indistinguishable from a right one.

Diagnostic sequence

Diagnostic order

Each step rules out a class of cause. Run them in order and the last one usually has a single explanation standing.

  1. 1

Count deals carrying the li_fat_id click identifier

The ceiling on everything else. Do this before debugging anything downstream.

  2. 2

Follow one real conversion end to end

From the ad click through HubSpot and into LinkedIn.

  3. 3

Open a Closed Won deal and follow it back to its contact

Does that contact carry the identifier property, populated? Then check the date gap between the contact's creation and the deal's close — that gap decides whether this integration is possible at all.

  4. 4

Confirm auto-tagging is on and the conversion is defined in Campaign Manager

Two settings, both easy to miss, and either one missing means nothing matches.

  5. 5

Read the match rate, not the success message

Campaign Manager reports conversions against each defined conversion action with its own window. A successful API call is not a matched conversion — reconcile LinkedIn's reported conversions against your CRM for the same window, and expect a gap wherever your sales cycle exceeds the attribution setting.

Source-of-truth validation

How it gets proven

Against HubSpot's own records, not against either platform's dashboard.

Source of truthHubSpot's Deals report, filtered to Closed Won for the same window, by close date.
  • The li_fat_id click identifier confirmed present on a live deal.
  • A real conversion followed from click through HubSpot to LinkedIn.
  • Auto-tagging confirmed enabled, the conversion defined in Campaign Manager, and deduplication verified on a real conversion.
  • The click-to-close time distribution measured, so you know what share of deals close inside the destination's window.
  • Reconciled over a fully closed window, matched per record rather than on totals.
  • Re-checked 30 days later.

Straight talk

When you don't need this

Worth reading before paying anyone, including us.

  • If LinkedIn already reports conversions that reconcile against HubSpot's records within a few percent, this join is working and there is nothing to buy.
  • Measure identifier coverage yourself first — pull your last hundred deals and count how many carry the li_fat_id click identifier. Ten minutes, free, and it tells you whether any of this is worth doing.
  • If your median deal closes well past the destination's upload window, the honest answer is a different measurement strategy, not this integration. We will tell you that on the call rather than sell you a build that cannot work.
  • If you are not selling to businesses, LinkedIn's cost per click is very hard to justify and no measurement work changes that arithmetic.

Who this is for

Honest about who we’re a fit for.

We don’t take every project. Here’s how to tell if we’re right for you.

Good fit

You’re a great fit if…

  • You run HubSpot → LinkedIn (or are migrating to it)
  • You spend $5K+/month on paid ads (Meta, Google, TikTok, Microsoft, LinkedIn)
  • Your reported ROAS doesn’t match what your bank account is saying
  • You want to own your tracking stack — no monthly SaaS fees forever
  • You have 2–4 days to do this once and never think about it again
Not a fit

Skip us if…

  • You spend less than $500/month on paid ads (browser pixel is fine)
  • You want a SaaS dashboard with monthly fees forever (Triple Whale, Hyros)
  • You need attribution modeling — we fix the data foundation, not multi-touch reports
  • You want a 6-month enterprise consulting engagement (we ship in 4 days)
  • You expect us to manage your ad accounts (we don’t — that’s a different service)

If you’re still unsure, book the call anyway— we’ll tell you straight whether we can help.

What you get

What gets built

Item 01

Identifier capture into HubSpot

Create a custom contact property, populate a hidden form field from the persisted first-party cookie, and confirm the property lands on the contact rather than only on the form submission.

Item 02

Event source: a HubSpot workflow or webhook on deal stage change

Trigger when the deal reaches Closed Won and send the deal amount with the identifier stored on the associated contact. Sending on form submission instead means you optimize toward form fills, which is exactly the behavior that fills a pipeline with unqualified leads.

Item 03

Dispatch to LinkedIn

Server events to the LinkedIn Conversions API with the click identifier, hashed user data and a matched event identifier.

Item 04

Reversals where they exist

A deal reopened or moved out of Closed Won can be retracted where the destination supports it, though most teams accept the small error here rather than wire it.

Got questions?

The honestanswers.

No buzzwords, no upsell. If we don’t know, we say so.

01Why aren't my HubSpot conversions showing in LinkedIn?

Almost always because the li_fat_id click identifier never reached the HubSpot contact and deal. The identifier has to be captured on the form and written to a contact property. HubSpot forms embedded in an iframe do not automatically see your page's cookies, so a hidden field has to be populated deliberately. Miss that and the contact is created clean, with nothing to join on ever again. Measure coverage before debugging the dispatch.

02What identifier does LinkedIn need?

The li_fat_id, appended to your landing page URL when auto-tagging is enabled on the LinkedIn account. LinkedIn also matches on hashed email and on company-level signals. Two things make this different from the consumer networks: auto-tagging is not always on, and LinkedIn's real strength is company-level reporting, so an event that carries no company context loses much of what makes the platform worth using.

03Where should the event come from?

A HubSpot workflow or webhook on deal stage change. Trigger when the deal reaches Closed Won and send the deal amount with the identifier stored on the associated contact. Sending on form submission instead means you optimize toward form fills, which is exactly the behavior that fills a pipeline with unqualified leads.

04How do I know it worked?

Campaign Manager reports conversions against each defined conversion action with its own window. A successful API call is not a matched conversion — reconcile LinkedIn's reported conversions against your CRM for the same window, and expect a gap wherever your sales cycle exceeds the attribution setting.
