How to track trade show lead to closed deal for TikTok Ads

A badge scan at a booth has no click identifier and never will, but the pre-show campaign that booked the meeting does — and those are two very different leads recorded identically. On TikTok Ads the specifics that matter are the click identifier (ttclid), the import mechanism (the Events API), and deduplication uses a shared event ID between the pixel and the Events API, the same principle as Meta. The chain only works end to end if the identifier is captured on landing and stored on the closed deal in your CRM — no cookie survives the gap between pre-show campaign click and deal closed.

The problem

Where this funnel usually breaks

TikTok · Trade show lead → deal-specific issues
Leak #01

Every show lead imported with one source

It is the fastest way to load the list and it destroys the only distinction that matters — whether the campaign produced the lead or the booth did.

Leak #02

The whole show's pipeline credited to media

Booth cost, travel and staffing produced most of it. Attributing the lot to a pre-show campaign makes that campaign look extraordinary.

Leak #03

Scanned leads never marked unattributable

They then sit in the pipeline as ordinary leads and quietly inflate every source-level report they touch.

Specific to TikTok × Trade show lead → deal

TikTok before a trade show: rarely the right channel

For most B2B trade shows, TikTok is a poor fit for pre-show meeting booking. If you use it for a consumer or creator-industry show, capture ttclid on the meeting booking page, store it on the contact, and send the booked meeting through the Events API. Scanned booth leads should never be sent to TikTok as conversions.

Trade show buyers are procurement managers, engineers and department heads planning a week of meetings, and they do not usually schedule them from a short video feed. Shows with a consumer or creator angle, such as beauty, gaming or creator economy events, are the exception, because TikTok users are often the attendees or the brands exhibiting.

If one of those shows applies, keep the funnel narrow: a booking page with a small number of meeting slots, ttclid captured into a hidden field, and a distinct booking event sent through the Events API. Expect very few bookings. TikTok's delivery cannot learn from a few dozen meetings, so optimize toward landing page visits or the booking form and read the outcome from the CRM.

The failure specific to TikTok is crediting it with the show buzz. Exhibitors often post booth content organically during the show, and attendees who visit after seeing those posts arrive as scans with no ttclid. That attention is real, but it is not paid media. Record those visitors as booth leads and note the post that prompted the visit, if they mention it.

Architecture

The exact event sequence

Five stages. The break is at stage four: pre-booked meetings and floor scans get imported into the CRM in one batch, and after that no one can tell them apart. The identifier has to survive all of them.

  1. Step 1

    Pre-show campaign click

The only stage in this funnel with an identifier. Capture it and store it on the contact immediately.

  2. Step 2

    Meeting booked at the show

Attributable, because it came from the campaign.

  3. Step 3

    Badge scanned at the booth

Not attributable. Someone walked past and was interested. That is a real lead and it is not a campaign result.

  4. Step 4

    Post-show follow-up

Where both types converge and become indistinguishable if nobody separated them at intake.

  5. Step 5

    Deal closed

Months later, at a value that has to be traced back to which of the two origins produced it.

Diagnostic sequence

What's specific to TikTok Ads

The funnel logic above is the same wherever you advertise. These are the parts that change because it's TikTok Ads.

  1. 1

    Click identifier: ttclid

TikTok's click identifier, appended to the landing URL. Capture it on landing and persist it exactly as you would gclid or fbclid — it's the strongest matching signal available and the most commonly missing one, because TikTok is often added to a stack that was built around Google and Meta.

  2. 2

    Import mechanism: the Events API

Structurally similar to the other server-side conversion APIs: event name, timestamp, event ID, hashed user identifiers, event properties. TikTok's exact field names change more often than the other major platforms', so build against their current documentation rather than a blog post — including this one.

  3. 3

    Deduplication

Send the same event ID from the browser pixel and the server event. The mechanics mirror Meta's closely enough that a team who has done one can do the other, but verify TikTok's current requirements rather than assuming parity — the deduplication window in particular isn't a figure we'll guess at.

  4. 4

    Window and timing

Verify the current attribution and import windows in TikTok's documentation. They differ from Google's and Meta's, and quoting a number here that goes stale would be worse than sending you to the source.

  5. 5

    The TikTok gotcha

TikTok is usually the third platform added to a stack, and it typically inherits whatever assumptions were made for Google and Meta. The most common result is that ttclid is never captured at all, because the capture code was written naming gclid and fbclid and nobody revisited it.

Source-of-truth validation

How to prove the chain works

One real journey, followed all the way, then a reconciliation. Neither on its own is enough.

Source of truthyour CRM, with the lead source split into pre-booked and scanned
  • A live TikTok ad clicked, and the identifier confirmed present on the landing URL.
  • The same identifier confirmed on the closed deal in your CRM after a full real journey through every step.
  • Deal closed confirmed arriving at TikTok Ads, verified by TikTok's own event diagnostics, plus a reconciliation against your records.
  • Your crm, with the lead source split into pre-booked and scanned reconciled against TikTok Ads per record over a fully closed window.
  • The same reconciliation repeated 30 days later.

Straight talk

When this doesn't apply to you

Worth checking before you build anything, because two of these are common and both mean the work isn't worth doing.

  • If you run no pre-show digital campaign, every lead from the event is a booth lead and none of it is attributable. Say so.
  • If TikTok is a small share of your spend, the effort is better spent making Google and Meta correct first — the same infrastructure then extends to TikTok as one additional tag rather than a separate project.
  • If your cycle from click to deal closed regularly exceeds the import window, the final event can't drive bidding whatever you build. Optimize toward pre-booked meetings held at the show instead and use the later data for budget decisions rather than for bidding.
  • If almost none of your closed deals carry a click identifier today, that's the whole project. Fix capture first — the import is the easy half and no tooling rescues a record with nothing to reference.

What you get

The implementation, on TikTok Ads

Item 01

Capture ttclid on landing

ttclid is appended on ad clicks. Add it explicitly to your capture list — the single most common TikTok tracking fault is capture code that predates TikTok being in the account.

Item 02

Persist it to the closed deal in your CRM

Write the identifier onto the contact at the pre-show registration, weeks before the show. There is no second chance once the event starts.

Item 03

Send deal closed from the record

Your CRM on the closed deal, but only for contacts whose pre-show campaign identifier was stored before the event. Dispatched to TikTok Ads through the Events API.

Item 04

Deduplicate and reverse

Deduplication uses a shared event id between the pixel and the events api, the same principle as meta. Lost deals reverse.

Got questions?

The honestanswers.

No buzzwords, no upsell. If we don’t know, we say so.

01Is TikTok useful for driving trade show booth meetings?

For most B2B shows, no. Consumer, beauty and creator-focused events are the exceptions worth testing.

02Should organic TikTok posts from the show floor count as campaign results?

No. Track them as a separate source; visitors they send to the booth arrive as scans without a click identifier.

03Why isn't meeting booked at the show enough to optimize on?

Because badge scans measure footfall past your booth, which is a function of your stand position and the show's attendance, not of anything you bought.

04How does the identifier survive to deal closed?

It doesn't, as a cookie — the gap is too long. It has to be written onto the closed deal in your CRM at the point of pre-show campaign click, where it lives as a field rather than as browser storage.

05What does TikTok Ads need to accept the conversion?

A standard event name, an event timestamp, a shared event ID, hashed and normalized user identifiers, and ttclid where available. Confirm the current required fields in TikTok's documentation before building.

06How long does this take to build?

Two to four days for the implementation, plus a closed reconciliation window before we'd call it verified. Capture and persistence are the fiddly parts; the import itself is usually an afternoon.

07Can I do this myself?

Yes, and the reference pages on this site cover the mechanics. The part that's genuinely tedious rather than clever is keeping ttclid alive through multi-step forms and a lead list imported in one batch after the show, which fails silently at every stage.
