How to track trade show lead to closed deal for Reddit Ads
A badge scan at a booth has no click identifier and never will, but the pre-show campaign that booked the meeting does — and those are two very different leads recorded identically. On Reddit Ads the specifics that matter are the click identifier (the rdt_cid click identifier), the import mechanism (the Reddit Conversions API), and Reddit deduplicates on the conversion ID carried on both the pixel event and the server event. The chain only works end to end if the identifier is captured on landing and stored on the closed deal in your CRM — no cookie survives the gap between pre-show campaign click and deal closed.

Where this funnel usually breaks
Every show lead imported with one source
It is the fastest way to load the list and it destroys the only distinction that matters — whether the campaign produced the lead or the booth did.
The whole show's pipeline credited to media
Booth cost, travel and staffing produced most of it. Attributing the lot to a pre-show campaign makes that campaign look extraordinary.
Scanned leads never marked unattributable
They then sit in the pipeline as ordinary leads and quietly inflate every source-level report they touch.

Reddit before a trade show: technical audiences who hate sales pitches
For trade show pipeline on Reddit, capture rdt_cid on the meeting booking page and store it on the contact before the show, then send the booking as a Lead through the Reddit Conversions API. Send meetings held and closed deals from the CRM for pre-booked contacts only, and expect most Reddit influence to go unattributed.
Reddit fits shows with technical audiences, such as developer, security, IT or engineering conferences, where attendees discuss which talks and vendors are worth their time in industry communities. Those readers are wary of vendors, so an ad offering a technical demo or a talk with an engineer converts better than one offering a sales meeting.
Expect delayed, indirect conversions. A reader sees your ad, comes to the booth without booking, and gets scanned. That person was influenced by Reddit and will be recorded as a booth lead. You cannot fix that with tracking, and you should not try to by sending scans to Reddit. Add a booking-page question about where they heard about the demo and keep the answer on the contact.
Volume will be small, often a handful of booked meetings per show. Optimize toward the booking page and measure the channel on meetings held and the deals that followed from them, read from the CRM after the show. Give the Reddit booking page its own URL so the source survives even when rdt_cid is missing, such as when the reader books from a different device later.
Architecture
The exact event sequence
Five stages. The break is at stage four: pre-booked meetings and floor scans get imported into the CRM in one batch, and after that no one can tell them apart. The identifier has to survive all of them.
Step 1
Pre-show campaign click
The only stage in this funnel with an identifier. Capture it and store it on the contact immediately.
Step 2
Meeting booked at the show
Attributable, because it came from the campaign.
Step 3
Badge scanned at the booth
Not attributable. Someone walked past and was interested. That is a real lead and it is not a campaign result.
Step 4
Post-show follow-up
Where both types converge and become indistinguishable if nobody separated them at intake.
Step 5
Deal closed
Months later, at a value that has to be traced back to which of the two origins produced it.
Diagnostic sequence
What's specific to Reddit Ads
The funnel logic above is the same wherever you advertise. These are the parts that change because it's Reddit Ads.
- 1
Click identifier: the rdt_cid click identifier
Reddit appends rdt_cid to your landing page URL, and the Reddit Pixel keeps its own identifier in the _rdt_uuid cookie. Reddit's audience is unusually privacy-aware — ad-blocker and tracker-blocker usage on Reddit traffic runs well above the web average — so the share of visits where the pixel never loads at all is higher here than on any other network in this list. The URL parameter is the identifier that survives; the cookie often does not.
- 2
Import mechanism: the Conversions API
Server events posted to Reddit's Conversions API with the click identifier and hashed customer information. Reddit's implementation is younger than Meta's and its documentation moves — confirm the current endpoint, event names and required fields against Reddit's own developer docs rather than an integration blog post.
- 3
Deduplication
The pixel and the Conversions API event must carry the same conversion identifier for the same action. Because so much Reddit traffic never runs the pixel at all, a lot of accounts skip the pixel entirely and send server-side only — which is a legitimate choice here in a way it rarely is elsewhere, and it removes the deduplication problem completely. Decide deliberately rather than running both and hoping.
- 4
Window and timing
Reddit's default attribution windows are shorter than Meta's and are configurable. Check what your account is set to before reconciling anything, and verify the accepted event-freshness limit for server events against Reddit's current documentation.
- 5
The Reddit gotcha
Reddit converts on a delay and on trust. People read a thread, leave, think about it, and come back through a branded search a week later — which is a genuine Reddit-driven conversion that Reddit will never be credited for and Google will happily claim. If Reddit is judged purely on last-click inside its own window, it will always look worse than it is. Build the measurement, then argue about attribution with that context on the table.
Source-of-truth validation
How to prove the chain works
One real journey, followed all the way, then a reconciliation. Neither on its own is enough.
- A live Reddit ad clicked, and the identifier confirmed present on the landing URL.
- The same identifier confirmed on the closed deal in your CRM after a full real journey through every step.
- Deal closed confirmed arriving at Reddit Ads, verified by the events received and matched in Reddit Ads Manager, reconciled against your own records.
- Your crm, with the lead source split into pre-booked and scanned reconciled against Reddit Ads per record over a fully closed window.
- The same reconciliation repeated 30 days later.
Straight talk
When this doesn't apply to you
Worth checking before you build anything, because two of these are common and both mean the work isn't worth doing.
- If you run no pre-show digital campaign, every lead from the event is a booth lead and none of it is attributable. Say so.
- If you are not running Reddit at meaningful spend, skip it. And if your Reddit strategy is organic community presence rather than ads, none of this applies — that traffic has no click identifier by definition.
- If your cycle from click to deal closed regularly exceeds the import window, the final event can't drive bidding whatever you build. Optimize toward pre-booked meetings held at the show instead and use the later data for budget decisions rather than for bidding.
- If almost none of your closed deals carry a click identifier today, that's the whole project. Fix capture first — the import is the easy half and no tooling rescues a record with nothing to reference.
What working looks like
Deal closed attributed to the click
Server-sideWeeks later if necessary, because the identifier lives on the closed deal in your CRM rather than in a cookie.
Reddit bidding fed the real outcome
8+ EMQVia the Conversions API, so it optimizes toward closed deals from pre-booked meetings rather than toward badge scans.
A reconciliation that closes
DedupedYour crm, with the lead source split into pre-booked and scanned matched per record against what Reddit Ads reports, over a fully closed window.
The implementation, on Reddit Ads
Capture the rdt_cid click identifier on landing
Read rdt_cid from the landing URL and persist it server-side on first sight. Do not build on the pixel's cookie — on this audience specifically, assuming the pixel ran is the mistake.
Persist it to the closed deal in your CRM
Write the identifier onto the contact at the pre-show registration, weeks before the show. There is no second chance once the event starts.
Send deal closed from the record
Your CRM on the closed deal, but only for contacts whose pre-show campaign identifier was stored before the event. Dispatched to Reddit Ads through the Reddit Conversions API.
Deduplicate and reverse
Reddit deduplicates on the conversion id carried on both the pixel event and the server event. Lost deals reverse.

The honestanswers.
No buzzwords, no upsell. If we don’t know, we say so.
01Is Reddit useful for driving booth meetings at technical conferences?
It can be for developer, IT and security events. Offer technical content or demos rather than sales meetings.
02Should scanned leads who mention Reddit be credited to Reddit Ads?
Record the self-reported source, but do not send them as Reddit conversions. They were not booked through the campaign.
03Why isn't meeting booked at the show enough to optimize on?
Because badge scans measure footfall past your booth, which is a function of your stand position and the show's attendance, not of anything you bought.
04How does the identifier survive to deal closed?
It doesn't, as a cookie — the gap is too long. It has to be written onto the closed deal in your CRM at the point of pre-show campaign click, where it lives as a field rather than as browser storage.
05What does Reddit Ads need to accept the conversion?
An event name Reddit recognizes, a conversion identifier matched to the pixel if you are also running one, a timestamp, hashed customer information, and the click identifier where you have it.
06How long does this take to build?
Two to four days for the implementation, plus a closed reconciliation window before we'd call it verified. Capture and persistence are the fiddly parts; the import itself is usually an afternoon.
07Can I do this myself?
Yes, and the reference pages on this site cover the mechanics. The part that's genuinely tedious rather than clever is keeping the rdt_cid click identifier alive through multi-step forms and a lead list imported in one batch after the show, which fails silently at every stage.
