How to track quiz completion to segmented offer for LinkedIn Ads

A quiz funnel deliberately shows different people different offers at different prices, which means a single blended conversion value describes none of them. The segment is the most valuable thing the funnel produces and it is usually thrown away before the conversion is sent. On LinkedIn Ads the specifics that matter are the click identifier (li_fat_id), the import mechanism (the LinkedIn Conversions API), and deduplication relies on a conversion identifier you supply, so a stable business reference is what makes it work. The chain only works end to end if the identifier is captured on landing and stored on the order, with the quiz segment attached — no cookie survives the gap between ad click and purchase.

The problem

Where this funnel usually breaks

LinkedIn · Quiz → segmented offer-specific issues
Leak #01

Quiz completion treated as the conversion

It is free, it is satisfying, and people complete quizzes for fun. Optimizing toward it finds you exactly those people.

Leak #02

Segment dropped from the conversion

Every segment then reports the blended average, so the platform cannot learn which audiences reach the expensive offer and which reach the cheap one.

Leak #03

Quiz app breaking identifier capture

Most quiz builders render as an embedded application that rewrites the page. If capture runs after it, a share of identifiers is lost on slower connections.

Specific to LinkedIn × Quiz → segmented offer

LinkedIn quiz funnels: only for B2B assessments with tiered offers

On LinkedIn, a quiz funnel only makes sense as a B2B assessment leading to tiered offers. Send the resulting purchase or qualified request through the LinkedIn Conversions API from your CRM, keyed on li_fat_id captured before the assessment loads, with the tier's real value and a separate conversion rule per tier.

Most quiz funnels sell consumer products, and LinkedIn is a poor place to buy that traffic: the costs are built for B2B buyers, and someone browsing at work is not shopping for a supplement. The version that fits is a scored assessment, a maturity check or readiness quiz, where the score routes to a self-serve plan, an assisted plan or a sales conversation.

In that version the segment is the routing decision, and it belongs on the CRM record. LinkedIn conversion rules have no custom dimension, so the clean setup is one rule per tier, each sent through the Conversions API with the tier's value. Low tiers that purchase online can go immediately; the sales-routed tier will close after the window and should be optimized on a qualified meeting instead.

If you are running a consumer quiz on LinkedIn anyway, keep the build minimal: Insight Tag sitewide, one purchase conversion, li_fat_id captured, and nothing segment-specific until spend justifies it. The common break is that first-party tracking was never enabled, so li_fat_id never appears on the URL.

Architecture

The exact event sequence

Five stages. The break is between stages three and five: the segment exists, it is known, and it does not survive to the conversion payload. The identifier has to survive all of them.

  1. Step 1

    Ad click

Onto the quiz landing page. Capture before the quiz application initializes.

  2. Step 2

    Quiz started

High volume, near-zero commitment. Not a conversion.

  3. Step 3

    Quiz completed

The answers are the segmentation. This is where the funnel's real asset is created.

  4. Step 4

    Offer shown

Different per segment, at different prices. Which offer someone saw changes what their conversion is worth.

  5. Step 5

    Purchase

Sent with the segment attached, or the value field is an average of unrelated products.

Diagnostic sequence

What's specific to LinkedIn Ads

The funnel logic above is the same wherever you advertise. These are the parts that change because it's LinkedIn Ads.

  1. 1

    Click identifier: li_fat_id

LinkedIn's click identifier, available where first-party tracking is enabled alongside the Insight Tag. It's the least commonly captured of the major identifiers, largely because LinkedIn is usually a B2B afterthought in a stack built for Google and Meta.

  2. 2

    Import mechanism: the Conversions API

Server-side conversions, including offline outcomes from a CRM, sent against the click identifier or matched on hashed user data. Verify the current field requirements in LinkedIn's documentation — this API is newer than Meta's and has moved more.

  3. 3

    Deduplication

Use a stable reference from your own records — the opportunity ID or lead ID — so the same conversion uploaded twice is recognised as one. Because LinkedIn conversions are frequently uploaded in batches from a CRM rather than fired in real time, duplicate uploads are a more realistic risk here than double-firing.

  4. 4

    Window and timing

LinkedIn's attribution and import windows differ from Google's and are worth reading directly. This matters more here than on any other platform, because B2B cycles routinely outrun every window available.

  5. 5

    The LinkedIn gotcha

The B2B cycle is the real constraint. LinkedIn's audience is the one most likely to take six months to close, which frequently puts the outcome you actually care about outside any import window. Plan to optimize on a qualified mid-funnel stage and use closed revenue for budget decisions rather than for bidding.

Source-of-truth validation

How to prove the chain works

One real journey, followed all the way, then a reconciliation. Neither on its own is enough.

Source of truthyour order system, with the quiz result stored on the order
  • A live LinkedIn ad clicked, and the identifier confirmed present on the landing URL.
  • The same identifier confirmed on the order, with the quiz segment attached after a full real journey through every step.
  • Purchase confirmed arriving at LinkedIn Ads, verified by LinkedIn's conversion reporting, plus a reconciliation against your CRM.
  • Your order system, with the quiz result stored on the order reconciled against LinkedIn Ads per record over a fully closed window.
  • The same reconciliation repeated 30 days later.

Straight talk

When this doesn't apply to you

Worth checking before you build anything, because two of these are common and both mean the work isn't worth doing.

  • If your quiz leads to one offer at one price, the segmentation adds nothing and this is an ordinary lead funnel.
  • If your LinkedIn spend is small relative to your other channels, the honest answer is to get Google and Meta correct first. The same infrastructure extends to LinkedIn afterwards as an additional destination rather than a separate build.
  • If your cycle from click to purchase regularly exceeds the import window, the final event can't drive bidding whatever you build. Optimize toward quiz completion with the segment attached as a dimension instead and use the later data for budget decisions rather than for bidding.
  • If almost none of your segmented orders carry a click identifier today, that's the whole project. Fix capture first — the import is the easy half and no tooling rescues a record with nothing to reference.

What you get

The implementation, on LinkedIn Ads

Item 01

Capture li_fat_id on landing

li_fat_id requires first-party tracking to be enabled with the Insight Tag. Add it to your capture list explicitly — it's the identifier most often missing entirely, because the capture code predates LinkedIn being in the mix.

Item 02

Persist it to the order, with the quiz segment attached

Capture in the document head before the quiz application loads, and write both the identifier and the resulting segment onto the order.

Item 03

Send purchase from the record

Your order system, with the quiz segment as a custom dimension and the actual price paid as the value. Dispatched to LinkedIn Ads through the LinkedIn Conversions API.

Item 04

Deduplicate and reverse

Deduplication relies on a conversion identifier you supply, so a stable business reference is what makes it work. Refunds reverse, retaining the segment so the refund rate per segment stays visible.

Got questions?

The honestanswers.

No buzzwords, no upsell. If we don’t know, we say so.

01Can LinkedIn Lead Gen Forms run a quiz?

Not a branching quiz with scored results. Lead Gen Forms collect fixed fields, so a scored assessment has to live on your site, with li_fat_id carried through it.

02Which LinkedIn conversion should an assessment funnel optimize on?

A qualified outcome from the higher tiers, such as a booked call, rather than assessment completion. Completions come cheaply from people curious about their score.

03Why isn't quiz started enough to optimize on?

Because completion rates are high and uniform while purchase rates differ wildly by segment, so completions carry almost no information about which traffic is worth buying.

04How does the identifier survive to purchase?

It doesn't, as a cookie — the gap is too long. It has to be written onto the order, with the quiz segment attached at the point of ad click, where it lives as a field rather than as browser storage.

05What does LinkedIn Ads need to accept the conversion?

A conversion rule configured in Campaign Manager, a conversion timestamp, a value, and either li_fat_id or hashed user data to match on. Confirm current requirements in LinkedIn's documentation.

06How long does this take to build?

Two to four days for the implementation, plus a closed reconciliation window before we'd call it verified. Capture and persistence are the fiddly parts; the import itself is usually an afternoon.

07Can I do this myself?

Yes, and the reference pages on this site cover the mechanics. The part that's genuinely tedious rather than clever is keeping li_fat_id alive through multi-step forms and a quiz application that rewrites the page before your capture runs, which fails silently at every stage.
