How to track quiz completion to segmented offer for Google Ads
A quiz funnel deliberately shows different people different offers at different prices, which means a single blended conversion value describes none of them. The segment is the most valuable thing the funnel produces and it is usually thrown away before the conversion is sent. On Google Ads the specifics that matter are the click identifier (gclid, gbraid and wbraid), the import mechanism (Google's offline conversion import), and conversion actions deduplicate on their own counting setting rather than an event ID, so the setting matters more here than the payload. The chain only works end to end if the identifier is captured on landing and stored on the order, with the quiz segment attached — no cookie survives the gap between ad click and purchase.

Where this funnel usually breaks
Quiz completion treated as the conversion
It is free, it is satisfying, and people complete quizzes for fun. Optimizing toward it finds you exactly those people.
Segment dropped from the conversion
Every segment then reports the blended average, so the platform cannot learn which audiences reach the expensive offer and which reach the cheap one.
Quiz app breaking identifier capture
Most quiz builders render as an embedded application that rewrites the page. If capture runs after it, a share of identifiers is lost on slower connections.
Specific to Google Ads × Quiz → segmented offer
Google Ads quiz funnels: one Purchase action, real price per segment
On Google Ads, track the purchase as one primary conversion action whose value is the actual price of the segment's offer, keyed on the gclid, gbraid or wbraid captured before the quiz loads. Send it from your order system through offline import or Enhanced Conversions, and report segments through secondary actions or GA4.
Google Ads conversion actions have no field for a custom dimension, so the segment cannot ride along on the purchase the way it can on Meta. The workable pattern is one primary Purchase action carrying the real price, which lets Maximize conversion value learn that one search term reaches the premium offer and another reaches the starter kit. Per-segment detail goes into secondary actions or into GA4, where the segment can be registered as a custom dimension.
Search traffic into a quiz is unusual because the query often states the segment already. Someone typing a product-finder query for one skin type has half-answered the quiz before it loads. Compare the search term report against completed segments: when a keyword lands in the same segment nearly every time, a direct landing page for that offer may beat the quiz for that query.
Where this breaks on Google is the quiz living on a separate builder domain or subdomain. Auto-tagging puts the gclid on your landing URL, the quiz opens elsewhere, and the order arrives with no identifier. iOS traffic makes it worse, because gbraid and wbraid are dropped by capture code that only looks for gclid.
Architecture
The exact event sequence
Five stages. The break is between stages three and five: the segment exists, it is known, and it does not survive to the conversion payload. The identifier has to survive all of them.
Step 1
Ad click
Onto the quiz landing page. Capture before the quiz application initializes.
Step 2
Quiz started
High volume, near-zero commitment. Not a conversion.
Step 3
Quiz completed
The answers are the segmentation. This is where the funnel's real asset is created.
Step 4
Offer shown
Different per segment, at different prices. Which offer someone saw changes what their conversion is worth.
Step 5
Purchase
Sent with the segment attached, or the value field is an average of unrelated products.
Diagnostic sequence
What's specific to Google Ads
The funnel logic above is the same wherever you advertise. These are the parts that change because it's Google Ads.
- 1
Click identifier: gclid, gbraid and wbraid
Three parameters, not one. gclid is the long-standing identifier; gbraid and wbraid arrive on iOS traffic where privacy constraints prevent the usual one. Capture code that names only gclid loses a growing share, silently, and the loss is invisible until you audit how many records carry an identifier.
- 2
Import mechanism: offline conversion import
Uploaded against the click identifier, either through the Google Ads API or as a file. The upload is the easy part; what limits it is how many of your records carry an identifier at all. Verify the current column format against Google's own template — it has changed before.
- 3
Deduplication
There's no shared event ID mechanism like Meta's. What matters instead is the counting setting on each conversion action — 'one' for lead-type conversions so a repeat submitter doesn't count three times, 'every' for ecommerce where a second purchase is a second sale. This is the single most common misconfiguration we find in Google Ads accounts.
- 4
Window and timing
Google's offline import window is 90 days from the click. Anything older can't be matched, and rows outside it fail as unmatched without much explanation. Measure your median click-to-outcome time against that before designing anything.
- 5
The Google Ads gotcha
A conversion action that stops receiving hits is flagged as inactive 30 days later — by which point a month of budget has already run against a missing signal. Check the last-received date on every action monthly; it takes two minutes and it's the cheapest monitoring available.
Source-of-truth validation
How to prove the chain works
One real journey, followed all the way, then a reconciliation. Neither on its own is enough.
- A live Google Ads ad clicked, and the identifier confirmed present on the landing URL.
- The same identifier confirmed on the order, with the quiz segment attached after a full real journey through every step.
- Purchase confirmed arriving at Google Ads, verified by the match rate on the upload, not the success message.
- Your order system, with the quiz result stored on the order reconciled against Google Ads per record over a fully closed window.
- The same reconciliation repeated 30 days later.
Straight talk
When this doesn't apply to you
Worth checking before you build anything, because two of these are common and both mean the work isn't worth doing.
- If your quiz leads to one offer at one price, the segmentation adds nothing and this is an ordinary lead funnel.
- If you're running Performance Max exclusively and haven't separated your conversion actions, the import will work and the reporting won't tell you much. Worth sorting the account structure first.
- If your cycle from click to purchase regularly exceeds the import window, the final event can't drive bidding whatever you build. Optimize toward quiz completion with the segment attached as a dimension instead and use the later data for budget decisions rather than for bidding.
- If almost none of your segmented orders carry a click identifier today, that's the whole project. Fix capture first — the import is the easy half and no tooling rescues a record with nothing to reference.
What working looks like
Purchase attributed to the click
Server-sideWeeks later if necessary, because the identifier lives on the order, with the quiz segment attached rather than in a cookie.
Google Ads bidding fed the real outcome
8+ EMQVia offline conversion import, so it optimizes toward purchases, by segment rather than toward quiz completions.
A reconciliation that closes
DedupedYour order system, with the quiz result stored on the order matched per record against what Google Ads reports, over a fully closed window.
The implementation, on Google Ads
Capture gclid, gbraid and wbraid on landing
Auto-tagging appends the identifier. Confirm it's enabled in every account — it gets switched off for cleaner analytics URLs more often than you'd expect, and that single setting removes conversion attribution, Enhanced Conversions and offline import in one go.
Persist it to the order, with the quiz segment attached
Capture in the document head before the quiz application loads, and write both the identifier and the resulting segment onto the order.
Send purchase from the record
Your order system, with the quiz segment as a custom dimension and the actual price paid as the value. Dispatched to Google Ads through Google's offline conversion import.
Deduplicate and reverse
Conversion actions deduplicate on their own counting setting rather than an event id, so the setting matters more here than the payload. Refunds reverse, retaining the segment so the refund rate per segment stays visible.

The honestanswers.
No buzzwords, no upsell. If we don’t know, we say so.
01Should I create a separate Google Ads conversion action for each quiz segment?
Only as secondary, reporting-only actions. Keep a single primary purchase action with the real price as the value so bidding learns from all segments at once instead of splitting its data.
02Can Google Ads optimize toward quiz completions?
It can, but it will buy cheap completions from people who never reach checkout. If purchase volume is too thin, use completion as a low-value secondary action while you build purchase volume.
03Why isn't quiz started enough to optimize on?
Because completion rates are high and uniform while purchase rates differ wildly by segment, so completions carry almost no information about which traffic is worth buying.
04How does the identifier survive to purchase?
It doesn't, as a cookie — the gap is too long. It has to be written onto the order, with the quiz segment attached at the point of ad click, where it lives as a field rather than as browser storage.
05What does Google Ads need to accept the conversion?
A click identifier inside the 90-day window, a conversion action name that matches one configured in the account, a conversion timestamp for when the outcome happened, and a value. Read the match rate after uploading — a file can upload perfectly and match nothing.
06How long does this take to build?
Two to four days for the implementation, plus a closed reconciliation window before we'd call it verified. Capture and persistence are the fiddly parts; the import itself is usually an afternoon.
07Can I do this myself?
Yes, and the reference pages on this site cover the mechanics. The part that's genuinely tedious rather than clever is keeping gclid, gbraid and wbraid alive through multi-step forms and a quiz application that rewrites the page before your capture runs, which fails silently at every stage.
