Craigslist conversion tracking: "They saw it on Craigslist" and "they saw our ad" are the same buyer
A shopper sees your Google ad for a 7x14 enclosed trailer, finds the same unit in your Craigslist dealer post that night, and calls the number in the listing. You make the sale, Google Ads records nothing, and the deal gets marked "Craigslist." We found no documented way to put your own pixel on a Craigslist listing or pull a lead report out of it, so we build the tracking on your side: a separate number and a tagged link in every post, a locked source on every deal, and Google and Meta credited only with sales they can actually be matched to.

Craigslist · what breaks
What goes wrong when you sell through Craigslist and run ads
- 01
"Google Ads shows almost nothing, yet the boats keep selling"
Buyers who clicked your ad and later called from your Craigslist post get logged as Craigslist sales. Smart bidding never sees those deals, so it can pull back on the very searches that started them.
- 02
One phone number on everything
When your posts, website and Business Profile all show the same line, a golf cart call could have come from anywhere. Nobody can say which channel has earned the budget.
- 03
Email replies with no story attached
A shopper who answers your post by email lands in the inbox with no clue about what they saw first, so the source ends up blank or guessed, and nobody can say whether your ad started it.
- 04
Every sale uploaded, Craigslist ones included
Send Meta your whole sales list and it can match Craigslist buyers who also use Facebook. If your attribution setting includes view-through, Meta can take credit for a shed your post sold, and your next budget follows that false signal.
Craigslist · the fix
What changes after the fix — Craigslist
Each lead carries a real source
Craigslist call, Craigslist click, Google ad, Meta ad or walk-in, recorded at first contact instead of filled in from memory at delivery.
Ad platforms learn only from their own buyers
Google gets sales tied to a click ID or a matched web-form lead, and Meta gets the leads its ads produced. Craigslist-only buyers stay out of both.
A posting budget you can defend
Every month you see units sold from your Craigslist numbers and links next to what you spent posting.
Craigslist · architecture
What Craigslist actually lets you connect
Not much. Your listing lives on craigslist.org, a page you don't control, so the build happens on your side of the post. Anything below about Craigslist's own posting options gets confirmed in your account before we build on it.
- 1
The phone number in your post
Your strongest source signal. With a tracking number in each post, every Craigslist call arrives labeled.
- 2
A link to your own site
Where your dealer posts allow a link, we tag it. We confirm what your category allows first.
- 3
Email replies
We check whether replies to your posts arrive through a Craigslist reply address or straight to your own email, because that changes how the lead gets logged.
- 4
No pixel, tag or conversion report
We found no documented way to put your Google tag or Meta Pixel on a listing, and no lead export or webhook either.
- 5
Your own Google and Meta connections
Google offline conversion import, enhanced conversions for leads, and the Meta Conversions API with phone_call or physical_store as the action source.
Craigslist · diagnose
Where Craigslist tracking breaks, in the order we check
Start with the phone numbers, because on most dealer lots that's where the source gets lost first.
- 01
Count the numbers across your live posts
If one main line appears everywhere, nothing downstream can be split.
- 02
Click your own post's link
If there's no UTM, GA4 files the visit as referral or direct.
- 03
Open ten CRM leads marked Craigslist
Check who set the source and whether any of them carry a click ID.
- 04
Read what your sales upload includes
Find out whether Craigslist-only buyers are reaching Meta or Google.
- 05
Compare sold units with reported conversions
Channel by channel, over a closed month.
Craigslist · prove
The QA evidence — Craigslist
We test on your live posts and your real phone and CRM setup, not a demo listing.
Source of truth
Your dealer management or sales records: units sold or rental agreements signed by date, with sale price and the lead source recorded at first contact
- A test call to each Craigslist number, logged with the right post label.
- A click on each post link, shown in GA4 as Craigslist.
- An email reply logged in the CRM with a source reps can't overwrite.
- An ad-tagged test lead, with the click ID on the CRM record.
- Last month's sales upload checked line by line for Craigslist-only buyers.
- Sold units by channel matched against Google Ads and Meta over a closed month.
- The check repeated 30 days later, and again after any change to posting categories or numbers.

Craigslist · when not to buy
When you don't need this — Craigslist
Plenty of Craigslist sellers are fine without us.
- If you don't run Google or Meta ads, a separate number in your posts and a source column in your sales sheet will tell you what Craigslist is worth.
- If you sell a handful of units a month and ask every buyer how they found you, keep doing that.
- If Craigslist is your only channel, you have no ad bidding to protect.
- If all you're missing is a tracking number in your posts, your call-tracking provider can set that up, and we'll tell you so.

FAQ
Craigslist questions, answered
No. We found no documented way to add your own tag to a listing, so tracking runs through the number and link in your post and through your CRM.
Give each category or location its own tracking number and tagged link, then record the source on the deal. After a month, compare units sold per number with what you paid to post.
Only when the buyer also has a Google click ID or came through your website form, where enhanced conversions for leads can match them. A Craigslist-only buyer gives Google nothing to match, and claiming that sale would mislead your bidding.
You usually can't prove it at the click level. We record Craigslist as first contact and ask the ad question at the desk. If the buyer says they saw the ad and left an email or phone number, that sale can go through the Meta Conversions API, where Meta matches it against people its ads reached.
It's worth it if you also pay for Google or Meta ads, because that's where mislabeled Craigslist sales cost you money. If you don't, a tracking number and a source field are enough.
