Get your Shift4Shop tracking to 95%+ accuracy guaranteed in writing.
Shift4Shop merchants often run on years-old tracking modules that pre-date CAPI, iOS 14.5, and Consent Mode v2. The result: low EMQ, missed iOS purchases, broken consent compliance, and ad spend that under-performs against the actual store revenue. We rebuild Shift4Shop tracking on a modern server-side stack.

Shift4Shop · architecture
How a Shift4Shop order should reach the ad platforms
Shift4Shop gives reasonable template and API access, so the constraint here is usually accumulated legacy code rather than platform limits.
- 1
Click identifiers captured at first touch
Click IDs are captured in the template at landing and written to a first-party cookie ahead of the checkout flow.
- 2
The browser sends the fast, fragile copy
Template code fires browsing and cart events. The order confirmation template is the browser-side purchase hook and it is revisitable.
- 3
The order itself is the source of truth
The Shift4Shop order record, via the API, is the truth, filtered to a confirmed payment status.
- 4
A server container sends the authoritative event
A webhook or API poll posts confirmed orders to a GTM server container on your own subdomain, keyed on the order ID.
- 5
Customer identity raises match quality
The order carries email, phone and billing address, hashed server-side before it leaves.
Shift4Shop · events
The event set we build on Shift4Shop, and where each one comes from
Payment status matters here — Shift4Shop orders can exist before payment clears.
| Event | Fires when, on Shift4Shop | Key parameters | Sent from |
|---|---|---|---|
| view_item | A product page renders | item_id, value, currency, event_id | Browser + server, deduped |
| add_to_cart | The cart updates | item_id, quantity, value, currency, event_id | Browser + server, deduped |
| begin_checkout | The checkout template loads | value, currency, num_items, event_id | Browser + server, deduped |
| purchase | The order reaches a confirmed payment status | order_id, value, currency, items[], hashed email/phone/name/address, event_id | Server authoritative |
| refund | The order status is changed to refunded | order_id, value, currency | Server only |
Shift4Shop · normal or broken
Shift4Shop specifics
Order status handling causes most of the trouble here.
Normal, not a fault
Orders existing before payment clears
Shift4Shop creates the order first. Firing on creation rather than payment is the fault; the status flow itself is correct.
Template-level placement constraints
Expected on this platform.
Ad platforms report more conversions than you have orders
Meta credits a 7-day click and 1-day view; Google credits on click date. Two platforms can each claim the same sale. Compare each one to your order records separately and never add them together.
Recent days always look worse than they finish
Conversions are credited back to the date of the click, so yesterday's return on ad spend is understated and will keep improving for several days. This is attribution working, not data arriving late.
Actually broken
Conversions fired on order creation
Failed and abandoned payments counted as sales.
Confirmation template firing on refresh
Duplicated conversions.
Legacy analytics snippets still present alongside current tags
Doubled pageviews and sometimes doubled purchases.
Shift4Shop · prove
How we prove the Shift4Shop build is correct
The tag firing proves the tag fires. These prove the numbers are right.
Source of truth
Shift4Shop order records
- Purchase confirmed firing only on a confirmed payment status.
- Refresh of the confirmation template confirmed to produce no second conversion.
- Legacy snippets inventoried and removed.
- Purchase count within a few percent of shift4shop order records for a fully closed week, matched on order ID rather than on totals.
- No order ID appearing twice in any platform's event log.
- Deduplication confirmed at every destination that supports it.
- Test and staff orders excluded, with the exclusion confirmed active rather than merely configured.
- The same reconciliation repeated 30 days later, because a setup that works once and then drifts is the harder failure to catch.
