Local Services Ads for movers: price shoppers, move-day missed calls and cost per booked move

Local Services Ads put a moving company at the top of 'movers near me', but shoppers call several listings to price a date. LSA pays when job types match the moves you run, the office answers on move days, and each lead is matched by phone and time to a deposit in SmartMoving, Supermove or MoveBoard.

Symptoms

What LSA problems look like for movers

  1. 01

LSA leads come in all week. Your estimators say most callers wanted a ballpark for a date months away, and the booked-move count barely changed.

    What it costs

Tuned on cost per lead, the listing rewards the callers who phone every mover for a number, while the shoppers who put down a deposit are counted the same as the ones who never called back.

    What’s happening

LSA charges when the shopper contacts you. A move is sold later, after a survey or a walkthrough, a written estimate and a deposit, and the same shopper usually calls other movers from the same results page. LSA records the first call and nothing after it.

  2. 02

You are charged for calls about renting a truck, moving only a piano, or helpers to load a container.

    What it costs

Each one is a full lead fee for a job your pricing or equipment cannot take, with no dispute to recover it.

    What’s happening

The job types switched on in your profile define what counts as a valid lead, and Google no longer credits leads for job types you do not service. If labor-only or specialty moving is switched on, those callers are billable whether or not you send a crew.

  3. 03

The office misses calls every Saturday and at the end of the month, and LSA bills for them anyway.

    What it costs

You pay for shoppers you never spoke to on your busiest days, and the next shopper sees the mover whose office picked up.

    What’s happening

A missed call during business hours is charged once the caller stays on the line past 20 seconds, and missed calls can hurt your ranking. Move days are when owners, dispatchers and crew leads are on the road, which is exactly when a small moving office stops answering.

  4. 04

SmartMoving says the booked move came from Google. Nobody can say whether that meant LSA, Search, the Business Profile or a lead bought from a marketplace.

    What it costs

LSA, Search and the lead seller each claim the same booked move, or none does, and the budget follows whichever report someone happened to open.

    What’s happening

LSA calls never touch your website, so no click ID or UTM reaches the moving CRM, and leads bought from Moving.com or iRelo drop into the same pipeline. Unless someone records LSA as its own source on the opportunity, the deposit has no reliable origin.

The goal

What a fixed LSA account looks like for movers

  • Every charged LSA lead has an outcome on the opportunity: booked with a deposit, completed, or lost with a reason, matched by phone number and call time.
  • Cost per booked move and average move value from LSA, local and long-distance apart, next to Search and each lead seller, from the moving CRM.
  • Labor-only, specialty and brokered job types switched off unless you run them, so shoppers who cannot book never reach the listing.
  • Weekend and month-end calls answered or the listing scheduled off, with the missed-call count reviewed every week.

Eligibility

What Google checks before movers can run LSA

  • 1Owner and business background checks, which Google applies to selected businesses in the Moving services category.
  • 2A state-level business license and owner license where local law requires them. Several states regulate movers who run intrastate moves, so confirm what yours asks for before you apply.
  • 3Proof of general liability insurance for selected businesses, plus a business registration check and a business representative check.
  • 4Google's screening list for Moving services does not include a USDOT or FMCSA check. Interstate movers still need their federal registration, and that obligation sits with the FMCSA, not with Google's screening.

Job types

LSA job types for movers: what to switch on, what quietly costs money

Switch on

  • Local household moves

The core call LSA is built for: a family with a date and a house full of furniture who wants a crew and a truck. Keep it on in the ZIP codes your trucks start from.

  • Apartment and condo moves

Smaller tickets but frequent, often booked quickly around lease dates. Worth keeping on if your crews handle elevator reservations and stairs without losing the day.

  • Packing and unpacking

Raises the value of a move you were going to run anyway, and callers who ask for packing have usually stopped shopping on price alone.

  • Long-distance moves, if you hold the authority and run your own trucks

The largest tickets a mover books. Keep it on only if you carry the move yourself; judge it on deposits, because long-distance shoppers compare estimates for weeks.

Switch off, or check first

  • Labor-only loading and unloading, if you sell full-service moves

These callers have already rented a truck or a container and price helpers by the hour, often against marketplace rates. The lead fee is the same as for a full move.

  • Piano, safe and specialty item moves, unless you have the equipment

A specialty caller needs gear and trained crew. A lead you would refer to a piano mover is still charged.

  • Storage, if you have no warehouse of your own

Storage-in-transit callers expect you to hold their goods. If you would broker it to a facility, each call is a paid referral.

  • Long-distance moves you broker to another carrier

The caller expects the company on the listing to show up with the truck. Paying a lead fee to hand the move to a carrier squeezes the margin and sets up the review you least want.

Bad leads

What a bad LSA lead looks like for movers

  • A shopper who wants a price over the phone for a move months away and will not book a survey.

Valid to Google and common in moving. Record it as a quote that did not book, with the move date, so you can see whether far-out dates or a particular job type produce most of these calls.

  • Someone looking to rent a truck or buy boxes.

Not your customer. Rate it in the LSA inbox and check whether one job type keeps attracting do-it-yourself movers.

  • A lead broker, a moving marketplace sales rep or a recruiter calling the listing.

Rate it as low quality in the inbox. Google can credit low-quality leads automatically after review.

  • A past customer calling about a damage claim or a missing box.

Google does not charge again for contact from the same number within 15 days. Claims usually come later than that, so print your claims line on the bill of lading and the final invoice instead of letting customers find it through the listing.

Ranking

What moves your LSA position as one of the movers in the auction

  1. 01

    Responsiveness on move days

Missed calls can lower your ranking. Weekends and month-end are when moving offices are thinnest and shoppers call most, so cover those days with an office person or an answering service trained on your intake questions.

  2. 02

    Reviews

Rating and number of reviews count toward profile quality, and shoppers read moving reviews closely. Ask when the last box is in the new home and the crew is still there, and answer every complaint about damage in public, calmly.

  3. 03

    Message leads

Shoppers often send a message at night with the size of the home and both addresses. Turn messages on only if an estimator replies first thing; the shopper who messaged several movers books with whoever answers first.

  4. 04

    Bid and budget

Google recommends Maximize Leads. In summer, a budget that runs out by midday takes you out of the evening, when people who work all day finally start calling movers.

  5. 05

    Job types and service area

The service requested and the location decide which providers are eligible. A ZIP list drawn around where your trucks start, and job types limited to the moves you run, beat a wide setup that wins calls you will decline.

How we work

Getting LSA leads into SmartMoving, Supermove or Elromco MoveBoard

  1. 1

    What to record

A lead source of Google LSA on the lead or opportunity, separate from Search, the Business Profile and every purchased-lead provider, with the caller's phone number on the record.

  2. 2

    How to match

Match each charged LSA lead to an opportunity by phone number and call time, using the lead list from the LSA inbox or the Google Ads API. Then follow it through survey, estimate, booked with deposit and completed. In MoveBoard the deposit and signature happen in a customer portal link, so the booked status has to be read from the CRM, never from your website. Message leads arrive through proxy numbers and email aliases; ask for the shopper's real number when you reply.

  3. 3

    Lead feedback

Rate unusable leads in the LSA inbox, and keep the outcome and the lost reason on the opportunity: booked with another mover, date too far out, wanted a truck, price. That list tells you which job types and hours to change.

  4. 4

    Monthly check

Monthly: export the charged leads, match them to opportunities, and work out cost per booked move and average move value by move type, local and long-distance on separate rows. A move booked weeks ahead counts against the month its lead arrived, and cancellations after a deposit are subtracted, so busy months are not flattered by moves that never ran.

No accuracy guarantee here: we report the share of LSA leads for movers matched to jobs, and the share we could not match.

Channel split

LSA, Search ads and the Business Profile for movers

Moving is planned work with a date, and shoppers compare. LSA takes the top of 'movers near me' and is good at local household moves from people ready to talk to someone today. Search does what LSA cannot: route searches such as a city-to-city move, origin-city searches from people moving into your area, packing and storage queries, each sent to a page with a quote form that asks for the move size and date. Search leads carry a click ID, so booked moves can be imported against the ad. Brand searches overlap most: a customer referred by a realtor who searches your company name may call through the LSA listing, and you pay a lead fee for a move that was already yours. Purchased leads add one more overlap, because the same shopper often fills in a marketplace form and calls your listing in the same week.

Local Services Ads
Local household and apartment moves from your core ZIP codes, judged on booked moves with a deposit.
Search ads
Long-distance routes, inbound movers searching from other cities, packing and storage, with booked moves imported by click ID.
Business Profile
Reviews and the map listing shoppers check before they call any mover. Track its calls apart from LSA.
Lead sellers (Moving.com, iRelo, MoveAdvisor)
Shared requests sold to several movers. Tag them by provider, keep them out of any Google upload, and compare cost per booked move from the CRM.

Google Business Profile

The Business Profile side for movers

Primary category
Moving service
Secondary
Moving and storage service
Suspension risk
High. Moving is a category where lead-generation listings and brokers posing as local movers are common, and Google's guidelines exclude both, so real movers get swept up in the same reviews. Adding a storage category to a single-suite office with no warehouse, using a virtual office in a city you want to rank in, or padding the name with 'Cheap Movers Near Me' are the patterns that get moving profiles suspended. Add Moving and storage service only if you operate storage.
Address
Movers who dispatch from a yard or warehouse customers never visit should hide the address and set the service area to the cities and ZIP codes their trucks start from. An office with signage and staffed hours can show its address.

Honest fit check

When LSA is not worth it for movers

  • Your trucks are booked solid for the peak season. A shopper with a date will not move it for you, and the lead is charged either way.
  • You are a broker rather than a carrier. The listing promises the business that shows up with the truck, and handing LSA callers to another company invites the complaints that hurt every review.
  • Nobody can answer on move days and you have no answering service. Missed calls are charged once the caller holds on, and they pull the ranking down on the days demand peaks.

FAQ

Questions movers ask about Local Services Ads

Is Local Services Ads worth it for movers?

For local household moves in your core ZIP codes it often is, if the office answers. Judge it on booked moves with a deposit from your moving CRM, not on cost per lead, because shoppers call several movers and only one of them books.

Does Google check our USDOT number before we can run LSA?

Google's screening list for Moving services covers background checks, state-level business and owner licenses where local law requires them, general liability insurance and business registration checks, mostly for selected businesses. It does not list a USDOT check. Interstate movers still need FMCSA registration, so check with your compliance advisor what your ads and pages must show.

Can we get credit for truck rental or labor-only callers?

Not for job type or location any more. Google no longer credits leads for job types or areas you do not service, so switch those job types off. Rate genuinely low-quality leads, such as lead brokers selling to you, in the inbox; Google can credit those automatically.

How do we track LSA leads in SmartMoving or MoveBoard?

Record Google LSA as its own lead source on the opportunity, keep the caller's number, and match the LSA lead list to opportunities by phone number and call time each month. LSA calls never pass through your quote form, so there is no click ID; it is a match, not an import, and we report it as one.

Our LSA account is moving into Google Ads. What changes for a moving company?

Google's transition page names moving among the categories in the first phase, starting in August 2026. Manual maximum cost-per-lead bidding goes away, weekly budgets are divided by 7 into daily averages, and LSA performance reports do not transfer, so download them first. The Google Verified badge and your lead history move over.

Should booked LSA moves be uploaded to Google Ads as conversions?

Not against Search campaigns. LSA leads have no click ID, so an upload would credit the wrong campaign or fail. Keep LSA booked moves in your own monthly report, and import only Search moves that carry their click ID, with purchased leads excluded.
