Local Services Ads for financial advisors: below-minimum callers, client callbacks and cost per signed household

Local Services Ads can put a planning firm above 'financial advisor near me' searches, but many callers sit below your minimum, want one free answer, or are clients looking up your number. It pays when listed services match what you offer, calls get answered, and each lead is matched by phone and time to a signed agreement in your CRM.

Symptoms

What LSA problems look like for financial advisors

  1. 01

LSA shows a full month of leads. Your planners say most of the discovery calls ended at 'what is your minimum?'

    What it costs

Planner hours go to calls that cannot become clients, and the channel gets judged on cost per lead, which says nothing about whether any household fit.

    What’s happening

LSA charges for contact with your listing. It knows nothing about investable assets, planning fees or the kind of household you serve. Someone with a small workplace retirement balance and a single question is a valid lead to Google, and so is someone who wants to know whether to sell everything this week.

  2. 02

Clients calling about a transfer or a distribution show up in the LSA inbox as new leads.

    What it costs

You pay lead fees to serve people who already pay you, and the lead count looks better than the pipeline really is.

    What’s happening

Existing clients search the firm's name on their phone to find the number and tap the first listing, which is often your LSA ad. Google does not charge again for contact from the same number within 15 days, but a client who calls every quarter is a fresh charge each time.

  3. 03

A household that first called from LSA signed months later, and nobody connected the two.

    What it costs

LSA looks expensive because its wins are never counted, and a channel that does produce clients gets cut.

    What’s happening

An advisory relationship takes a discovery call, a planning meeting, a proposal, a signed agreement and then an asset transfer. If the caller's number and an LSA source are not on the prospect record from the first call, the signed household arrives in the CRM with no history, or gets credited to the CPA who also mentioned your name.

  4. 04

Calls come in while the advisor is in a client review, and they still appear on the LSA bill.

    What it costs

Charged leads who called the next firm on the list, plus a responsiveness signal that can lower your ranking for the calls that follow.

    What’s happening

A missed call during business hours is charged once the caller stays on the line past 20 seconds, and voicemails count. Small advisory offices often have no front desk, so the phone rings out whenever the planner is in a meeting.

The goal

What a fixed LSA account looks like for financial advisors

  • Every charged LSA lead has a prospect record with an outcome: signed, still in planning, or a recorded reason such as below minimum or existing client.
  • Cost per signed household by service type, for LSA and Search side by side, read quarterly from the CRM.
  • Services and service area limited to what the firm offers and where compliance has cleared it to take clients.
  • Calls answered in the firm's name during meetings, and voicemails returned within the hour.
  • Existing clients given a direct service line, so their calls stop arriving as charged leads.

Eligibility

What Google checks before financial advisors can run LSA

  • 1Identity verification for the business owner.
  • 2A license check for each financial planner at the firm. Google's page does not say which credential or registry it checks, so have every planner's registration details ready and make sure each name matches the Business Profile and the firm's records exactly.
  • 3Professional liability insurance where local law requires it.
  • 4A business background check, a business registration check and a check of the business representative, which Google applies to selected businesses. Every advertiser also needs a public, verified Business Profile.

Job types

LSA job types for financial advisors: what to switch on, what quietly costs money

Switch on

  • Retirement planning

The caller most firms want: someone within sight of retirement asking whether they are on track and how to draw income. These conversations lead to ongoing planning and asset management more often than any other first question.

  • Investment and portfolio management, if you take assets under management

Callers with money to move are the ones who can clear an asset minimum. Keep it on and judge it on households that signed and transferred assets, not on discovery calls booked.

  • Comprehensive or fee-only financial planning

For firms that charge a planning fee, this is the right caller even without large investable assets. Judge it on signed planning engagements, which close faster than asset transfers.

  • Rollovers at job change or retirement

A natural trigger moment, and the caller often has a balance in hand. Many balances are small, so keep it on only if your minimum fits, and track the share that signs on its own row.

  • Planning for a sudden change: inheritance, a business sale, a divorce settlement

Rare calls with high stakes for the caller. Worth keeping on if a planner can call back the same day; these callers are often talking to more than one firm that week.

Switch off, or check first

  • Tax return preparation, if you do not prepare returns

Filing-season callers want a return done, not a plan. If your profile suggests tax filing, every one of those calls is charged and referred to a CPA.

  • Insurance or annuity quotes, if you are fee-only

A caller shopping for a life insurance or annuity price wants a product, not advice. A fee-only firm pays for the call and sends them to an agent.

  • Debt and budgeting help your minimum rules out

These callers need help, but often from a credit counselor or a budgeting service. A lead you will always refer is still a charged lead.

  • Company retirement plan setup, if you do not serve plan sponsors

A business owner wanting a plan for employees starts a different sale with different paperwork. Switch it off unless the firm runs that line of business.

Bad leads

What a bad LSA lead looks like for financial advisors

  • A caller well below the firm's minimum who wants a quick opinion.

Valid to Google. Record the outcome as below minimum, using an asset band rather than a figure, so you can see whether these calls cluster in one service type or one time of day. If they dominate, narrow the services listed and say plainly on your profile who you work with.

  • Recruiters from broker-dealers, platform and model-portfolio vendors, insurance wholesalers or marketing agencies.

Rate it as low quality in the LSA inbox. Google can credit low-quality leads automatically after review.

  • Someone in a state where the firm cannot take them as a client.

Google no longer credits leads for areas you do not serve, so keep the service area to the places your compliance team has cleared. Record the reason on the prospect record so the pattern is visible.

  • An existing client calling about an account.

Contact from the same number within 15 days is not charged again; after that it is a new lead. Put the office or client-service line on statements, emails and the client portal so clients stop finding you through the ad.

  • A prospect who calls at lunchtime and reaches voicemail.

Not a bad lead, a lost one. Voicemails count as charged leads. Return the call within the hour, or route calls to an assistant or service that answers in the firm's name and books the discovery call.

Lead credits

Ranking

What moves your LSA position as one of the financial advisors in the auction

  1. 01

    Reviews, within your compliance policy

Rating and number of reviews count toward profile quality, but asking for reviews is not a free choice for an adviser: compliance may treat a solicited, steered or answered review as a testimonial under the SEC Marketing Rule. Follow the firm's written policy, and if it allows requests, ask every client the same way rather than picking the happy ones.

  2. 02

    Responsiveness

Missed calls can hurt your ranking. A planner's day is back-to-back meetings, so the listing needs someone who answers while the advisor cannot: an assistant, a shared line or an answering service briefed on your minimum and your calendar.

  3. 03

    Message and booking leads

Google says turning these on can help, especially outside business hours, and prospects often read about retirement in the evening. Only switch them on if someone replies the next morning and the planner's calendar holds real open slots.

  4. 04

    Profile completeness

Google counts completed verification checks and high-quality images toward profile quality. Photos of the actual planners and the office do more for a prospect deciding who to trust with their savings than stock images of a handshake.

  5. 05

    Budget sized to discovery calls

Google recommends Maximize Leads. Set the budget from the number of discovery calls your planners can hold each week, not from what the system suggests, because unanswered leads cost both money and ranking.

How we work

Getting LSA leads into Wealthbox, Redtail or Salesforce, with your scheduler in front

  1. 1

    What to record

A lead source of Google LSA on the prospect record, the caller's phone number, and the date of first contact, carried onto the household when the prospect becomes a client.

  2. 2

    How to match

Match charged LSA leads to prospect records by the caller's number and the time of the call, using the lead list from the LSA inbox or the Google Ads API. Message leads come through proxy numbers and email aliases, so ask for the prospect's direct number when you reply. Then follow each record through discovery call held, fits the minimum, plan presented, agreement signed, assets received.

  3. 3

    Lead feedback

Rate unusable leads in the LSA inbox, and keep the reason on the prospect record: below minimum, out of area, existing client, product shopper, vendor. Asset figures, account details and anything a client tells you about their finances stay in the CRM and never go to Google or any other ad platform.

  4. 4

    Monthly check

Monthly for lead quality, quarterly for signed households. Group leads by the month they arrived and follow each group until the agreements are signed and the assets land, then work out cost per signed household by service type, next to Search. A household that signs after several months still counts against the month its lead came in.

Channel split

LSA, Search ads and the Business Profile for financial advisors

For a financial advisor, LSA and Search compete for the same small pool of local searches, and the two do different jobs. LSA gives you the top of the page for someone who wants to talk to a person now, at a known price per contact. Search lets you choose the questions you answer, such as retirement income or fee-only planning, send them to a page that states your minimum, keep out free-advice, robo-advisor and advisor-job searches with negatives, and bid on a qualified discovery call once you send that stage back with a click ID. Brand searches overlap most: a prospect referred by a CPA or estate attorney searches your firm's name, calls through LSA, and you pay a lead fee for a referral you earned.

Local Services Ads
Prospects ready to talk now, in the services your firm signs most, judged on signed households per lead over a quarter.
Search ads
Specific planning questions with their own pages, a stated minimum, and the qualified discovery call sent back as the conversion.
Business Profile
The listing referred prospects check before calling. Track its calls separately, and keep each planner's profile owned by the firm.
Referrals from CPAs and attorneys
Often the best households. Record the referrer at intake, or these clients get credited to whichever ad they touched while looking up your number.
Paid advisor-matching services
Introductions with no click ID. Judge them on signed households from your own CRM, never on the service's own figures.

Google Business Profile

The Business Profile side for financial advisors

Primary category
Financial planner
Secondary
Financial advisor
Suspension risk
Moderate, mostly from practitioner profiles and office addresses. Google treats financial planners as individual practitioners who may have their own profiles, so a multi-advisor office can end up with several profiles at one address. When a planner leaves, their profile can keep showing your office, or merge with the firm's and take reviews with it. Virtual offices and coworking desks without staff during the stated hours are not eligible addresses, which is the usual problem for a small firm that rents a meeting room.
Address
Most advisors meet clients at a staffed office, so a profile with the address shown is normal, with one organization profile for the firm and one for each public-facing planner, all owned by the firm. An advisor who works from home and meets clients only by video or at their homes should hide the address and set a service area.

Honest fit check

When LSA is not worth it for financial advisors

  • Your planners are not taking new clients this year. LSA charges for every contact whether or not anyone can take the meeting.
  • You work only with households far above typical minimums. LSA brings the full range of callers, and referrals or targeted Search campaigns aim at your client more precisely.
  • Compliance does not allow the review requests or listing format LSA depends on. Settle the firm's policy first; nothing here is compliance advice.

FAQ

Questions financial advisors ask about Local Services Ads

Is Local Services Ads worth it for financial advisors?

It is worth it when cost per signed household, measured in your own CRM over a full quarter or longer, beats your other paid channels for the clients you want. Cost per lead looks reasonable for advisors and says nothing about how many callers fit the minimum.

What does Google check before an advisory firm can run LSA?

Identity verification for the business owner, a license check for each financial planner at the firm, professional liability insurance where local law requires it, and business background and registration checks for selected firms. Approved advertisers get the Google Verified badge; the money-back guarantee that came with Google Guaranteed has been discontinued.

Can we get credit for callers below our minimum?

Usually not. A below-minimum caller is a real person asking about your services, so it is a valid lead. Google credits genuinely low-quality leads, such as vendors and recruiters, automatically, and no longer credits leads for services or areas you do not serve. Prevention works better: list only the services you offer, and say who you work with on the profile.

How do we track LSA leads in Wealthbox or Redtail?

Record Google LSA as the source on the prospect record, keep the caller's number, and match the LSA lead list to prospect records by phone and time each month. LSA leads have no click ID, so this is a match rather than an import, and we report it as a matched share rather than promise an accuracy figure.

Does measuring LSA mean sending client data to Google?

No. The matching happens inside your CRM, against the lead list Google already holds. Asset figures, account details and anything a prospect told you stay in the CRM. Where Search conversions are sent back, they carry a stage name and a value band, never a client's finances.

How can we check our own LSA leads in ten minutes?

Export last quarter's charged leads from the LSA inbox. Mark every number that belongs to an existing client, every vendor or recruiter, and every lead your planners noted as below minimum. Then pick five households that signed this year and check whether any carries Google LSA as its source. The marked rows are what LSA cost you; the blank sources are what it may have produced without credit.
