Local Services Ads for audiologists: battery calls, family callers and cost per hearing aid fitting
Local Services Ads can fill a hearing practice's evaluation schedule, but audiologists sit in health care: no lead credits, no booking leads and no call recordings. It pays only when the listing keeps current patients and price shoppers out, and each lead is matched to a fitting in Sycle, Blueprint Solutions or CounselEar, often by a family member's number.

Symptoms
What LSA problems look like for audiologists
- 01
LSA says the phone rang all month. The front desk says it was mostly patients who already wear our hearing aids, calling about batteries, domes and a whistling receiver.
What it costs
Part of the LSA budget pays for the patients you already have. Because none of it can be credited, the only fixes are the services you show, the hours the listing runs, and putting your direct number where wearers will see it before they search.
What’s happening
Hearing aid wearers stay with a practice for years and call it often. Many of them find the number by searching your name, and the top of that page can be your own LSA listing. Google screens audiologists as health care, and lead credits are not available for health care verticals, so a current patient who taps that call button is a charged lead with no way back.
- 02
Half the LSA callers ask whether we take their hearing benefit or why our hearing aids cost more than the warehouse club, and then they hang up.
What it costs
You cannot separate a lead problem from a phone-handling problem. The channel gets cut or kept on the strength of whoever complains loudest at the staff meeting.
What’s happening
A price or coverage question is still a contact with your business, so it is a valid lead. Google does not offer LSA call recordings for health care verticals in the US, so nobody can play the call back to hear whether it was a shopper or a patient the front desk could have booked for an evaluation.
- 03
The calls come from a son or daughter in another city, and when the parent finally books, nobody connects the two.
What it costs
Fittings that LSA did produce show up as walk-ins or 'family referral', and the listing looks worse than it is. Practices pause the one channel that was reaching the people who decide.
What’s happening
Hearing loss is often noticed by the family first, and the adult child makes the call. The appointment is then created under the parent's name and the parent's landline. LSA leads carry no click ID, so the only match is a phone number and a time, and the number on the lead is not the number on the chart.
- 04
LSA charged us for calls nobody picked up on the days the audiologist was in the booth and the front desk was running a fitting.
What it costs
You pay for unanswered calls, older callers rarely try a second time, and missed calls can weigh on your responsiveness, which counts toward ranking.
What’s happening
A missed call during your business hours is charged once the caller stays on the line past 20 seconds, and a voicemail greeting counts as a connected call whether or not the caller leaves a message. A clinic with one audiologist and one person at the desk cannot answer while a hearing test or a fitting is under way.
The goal
What a fixed LSA account looks like for audiologists
- Every LSA lead matched to a patient record by the caller's or the family member's number, with an outcome.
- Cost per evaluation kept and per hearing aid fitting from LSA, next to Search, from the practice system.
- Current-patient and repair calls through LSA counted each month, so you can see whether printing the direct number worked.
- The LSA schedule inside staffed hours, including the days each satellite clinic is open.
- No hearing results, device details or patient identity sent to any ad platform; the reconciliation stays inside the practice.
Eligibility
What Google checks before audiologists can run LSA
- 1A provider background check and a practice background check, which Google lists for every audiologist advertiser.
- 2A state-level business license and owner license where local law requires them. Audiologists and hearing aid dispensers are often licensed separately, so confirm which license your state requires of each person who fits devices before you apply.
- 3General liability and professional liability insurance, which Google asks of selected businesses.
- 4National Provider Identifier verification, a business registration check and a business representative check, also for selected businesses. Health care verticals cannot run pre-badge ads, so the listing stays dark until screening finishes, and every approved advertiser then carries the same Google Verified badge.

Job types
LSA job types for audiologists: what to switch on, what quietly costs money
Switch on
Hearing evaluations for new patients
The front door of the practice. Someone who calls to book a hearing test has usually been nudged by a spouse or a missed conversation for months, and the evaluation is where a fitting starts.
Hearing aid consultations and new devices
The highest-ticket call a hearing practice gets from LSA. Keep it on and make sure the front desk can book the consult on the first call, with time for a family member to come along.
Tinnitus evaluation, if an audiologist on staff offers it
Callers with ringing in the ears have often tried other routes first and want a specialist. Keep it on only if you have a tinnitus program, and report it on its own row because it books differently from hearing aid consults.
Second opinions and upgrades from wearers of older devices
People whose hearing aids came from another clinic or a retail chain and are due for new ones. They already know the process and are choosing a provider, which makes them some of the best callers LSA sends.
Switch off, or check first
Hearing aid repair, batteries and supplies
These callers are almost always people who already wear a device, often your own patients. In health care none of those leads can be credited, so give wearers your direct number on the battery packaging, the cleaning kit and every reminder instead.
Earwax removal, if it is not a service you want to grow
A short, low-fee visit that some clinics offer as a convenience and others leave to primary care. If it is a convenience for you, every LSA charge for it is spent on the cheapest appointment in the book.
Programming devices bought online or over the counter, unless you sell a service package for it
Since over-the-counter hearing aids went on sale, practices get calls asking to adjust a device bought elsewhere. If you do not charge for that work, the lead is a cost with no fitting at the end.
Pediatric hearing tests, cochlear implant candidacy or balance testing, unless you are equipped and staffed for them
Each needs its own equipment and training. Callers who need them will be referred on, and the lead is charged anyway.
Bad leads
What a bad LSA lead looks like for audiologists
A current patient whose hearing aid stopped working, calling through the listing because it was the first result for your name.
Charged and not creditable. Count these every month. If the share is high, the fix is your direct number on everything a wearer handles, not a better listing.
A caller with a hearing benefit through a health plan who asks whether you are in network.
Valid to Google. If you are not in the benefit network, record the reason. If you are, note that the appointment may be scheduled through the plan's own staff, so the reconciliation does not lose the patient when the booking arrives from the network instead of from your front desk.
A shopper comparing your hearing aid price with a warehouse club or an online brand.
A valid lead with a low booking rate. Train the front desk to offer the hearing evaluation rather than a price over the phone, and record whether one was booked. If these callers dominate, the services you show may be pulling price comparison rather than care.
An adult child in another state asking about a parent's hearing.
Not a bad lead. Ask for the parent's name and phone number on the first call and store both numbers on the patient record, so the eventual fitting can be matched back to this call.
A manufacturer rep, a marketing company or a benefit network recruiting providers.
Charged, and no credit is available in health care. Log it so the share of vendor calls is visible over time.
Ranking
What moves your LSA position as one of the audiologists in the auction
- 01
Answering while the audiologist is testing
Missed calls can hurt responsiveness. A small clinic can protect it by routing LSA calls to a second line or an answering service during test and fitting blocks, as long as whoever answers can book an evaluation.
- 02
A listing schedule that matches staffed days
Many hearing practices run satellite clinics that open one or two days a week. Set the LSA schedule to the hours the phone is answered, because a call missed during business hours is still charged once the caller holds on.
- 03
Reviews
Rating and number of reviews count toward profile quality. The follow-up visit after a fitting, when the patient is hearing the grandchildren again, is the moment to ask. Reply without confirming that the reviewer is a patient or mentioning their hearing.
- 04
Profile quality and photos
Google counts completed verification checks and high-quality images toward profile quality. A sound booth, the front desk and the audiologist are safe and useful pictures; patient photos need written permission.
- 05
Bid and budget
Google recommends Maximize Leads. Hearing callers phone during the day more than at night, so a budget that holds through office hours matters more here than evening coverage.

How we work
Getting LSA leads into Sycle, Blueprint Solutions or CounselEar
- 1
What to record
A referral source of Google LSA on the patient record, with the caller's phone number in a secondary phone field when the caller was a family member, and the patient's own number as primary.
- 2
How to match
Match each charged lead to a patient by phone number and call time, checking both the primary and the secondary numbers, using the LSA lead list or the Google Ads API. Then follow it through evaluation booked, evaluation kept, hearing aid trial and purchase. Message leads arrive through proxy numbers and email aliases, so ask for a real number in the reply.
- 3
Lead feedback
There are no credits to claim in health care, so outcome logging is for your own decisions: current patient, repair or batteries, price only, benefit network, family caller, evaluation booked, fitted. That list tells you which services and hours to change.
- 4
Monthly check
Monthly for the lead mix and quarterly for fittings: a hearing aid purchase often follows the evaluation by weeks and a trial period, so count it against the month the lead arrived. Keep it in the practice system and your own report. LSA has no conversion import, and nothing about a patient's hearing should go to an ad platform.
No accuracy guarantee here: we report the share of LSA leads for audiologists matched to new patients, and the share we could not match.
Channel split
LSA, Search ads and the Business Profile for audiologists
For a hearing practice the costliest overlap is with its own patients. Wearers come back for years for cleanings, repairs and new devices, they search the practice name to find the number, and the LSA call button can sit above your website on that search. Search ads give you what the listing cannot: separate campaigns for hearing aid consults, tinnitus and second opinions, with negatives for over-the-counter models and retail chains, and fittings imported against the original click under a neutral conversion name. Health is a sensitive category under Google's personalized ads policy, so remarketing lists and Customer Match are out either way. LSA's job is the new patient, or the family member, who wants a nearby audiologist and an appointment this month.
- Local Services Ads
- New-patient evaluation and consultation calls in the towns around each staffed clinic, judged on fittings per lead, with current-patient calls counted and kept small.
- Search ads
- Hearing aid, tinnitus and upgrade searches with their own landing pages, and the hours or satellite towns LSA does not cover, with fittings imported against the click and nothing clinical in the conversion.
- Business Profile
- Where patients and families find directions and reviews. Tag its website and appointment links, and track its calls apart from LSA.
- Physician referrals and benefit networks
- Tracked by source in the practice system and kept out of paid reporting, so an ENT referral or a plan-scheduled appointment is never credited to LSA.
Google Business Profile
The Business Profile side for audiologists
- Primary category
- Audiologist
- Secondary
- Hearing aid store, Hearing aid repair service
- Suspension risk
- Moderate, mostly from part-time satellite clinics and practitioner profiles. Hearing practices often see patients a day or two a week inside a physician's office or a senior community. Google's guidelines exclude locations that are not staffed during their stated hours, so a satellite profile showing a full week invites edits and suspension. Practitioner profiles carry their own naming rules: a solo audiologist at a branded practice uses one shared profile named in the brand and practitioner format, and names padded with 'Hearing Aids Near Me' run against the rules on business names.
- Address
- Patients come to you for testing, so show the address. A satellite clinic can have its own profile only if it is staffed during the hours it lists; a room you borrow once a month should be mentioned on the main profile instead.
Honest fit check
When LSA is not worth it for audiologists
- Your next new-patient evaluation is weeks away. A family that has finally persuaded a parent to call will not wait, and the call is charged either way.
- Most of your new patients arrive through physician referrals and benefit networks and the schedule is already full. LSA would mainly charge you for people who were coming anyway.
- One person runs the desk during every test and fitting and there is no overflow. With no credits in health care, every unanswered call that holds on is a sunk cost.
- Your work is mostly diagnostic audiology on physician referral, such as hospital-based testing. LSA callers are adults looking for hearing aids and a practice near home.
FAQ
Questions audiologists ask about Local Services Ads
Can audiologists get credits for bad LSA leads?
No. Google does not offer lead credits for health care verticals, and its screening page treats Audiologist as health care. Prevention is the only lever: the services you show, the hours the listing runs, and making sure current wearers have your direct number.
Can patients book a hearing test directly through LSA?
Not in health care. Google says booking leads are not available for health care verticals, so hearing practice leads arrive as calls and messages. Keep your online scheduler on the website and the Business Profile, tagged by source.
Is Local Services Ads worth it for a hearing practice?
It is worth it when matched fittings, after you take out current patients, repair calls and benefit-network bookings, come in at a cost per fitting you would pay again. Cost per lead says little when a sale follows the evaluation by weeks.
Why don't our LSA leads match our new patients?
Often because the caller was a son or daughter and the chart belongs to the parent. Store the caller's number as a secondary phone on the patient record and match on both numbers. LSA leads have no click ID, so the phone number is the whole match, and we report a matched share rather than promise an accuracy figure.
What can we check ourselves in ten minutes?
Export last month's LSA leads and have the front desk look up each number in the practice system. Count current patients, repair and battery calls, price-only calls, benefit questions and evaluations booked. Then compare the LSA schedule with the hours someone is actually free to answer.
Does any patient information go to Google?
Not from the LSA reconciliation. LSA has no conversion import, so the match to fittings stays in your practice system and your own report. For Search ads, imported fittings carry a neutral name and a value tier, never a hearing result or a device model.
