How to track comparison page visit to demo request for Google Ads
Someone reading "you versus your competitor" is further down the funnel than almost any other visitor on the site, and comparison traffic is routinely pooled with blog traffic and judged by the same standard. On Google Ads the specifics that matter are the click identifier (gclid, gbraid and wbraid), the import mechanism (Google's offline conversion import), and conversion actions deduplicate on their own counting setting rather than an event ID, so the setting matters more here than the payload. The chain only works end to end if the identifier is captured on landing and stored on the demo request and the opportunity it became — no cookie survives the gap between ad click and opportunity created.

Where this funnel usually breaks
Entry page not written to the lead
Once the session ends, there is no way to tell a comparison-page demo from a homepage demo, and they convert at very different rates.
Competitor-brand clicks judged on volume
This traffic is low volume and high intent by design. Judged on cost per lead against broad campaigns, it looks expensive and gets paused.
Demo requested counted, demo held ignored
The no-show rate is the difference between a good source and a bad one, and it is exactly what the request count hides.

Google Ads competitor terms: import held demos, not form fills
On Google Ads, import the held demo and the opportunity as offline conversion actions from your CRM, keyed on the gclid, gbraid or wbraid captured on the comparison page and stored on the lead with the entry page. Set both to count one per click, and use Enhanced Conversions for Leads to recover leads whose identifier was lost.
Google Search is where comparison traffic is born: someone types your competitor's name plus alternative, or both names with vs. You can bid on a competitor's name as a keyword, but using their trademark in ad text can be restricted if they file a complaint, so expect ad copy to be more constrained than the landing page. Put these keywords in their own campaign so their conversion data is not averaged with broad terms.
Bidding should learn from held demos, not requests. With low volume, a held-demo action may not give Smart Bidding enough to work with, so a realistic setup is the request as primary at a small value, the held demo imported as a second primary action at a higher value, and the opportunity as secondary for reporting. Watch the 90-day window: opportunities that open after it can only be reported from the CRM.
The usual break on Google is that the visitor reads the comparison page, clicks to the demo page, and the form captures the gclid but not where they first landed. Store the first landing path in a hidden field at the same moment you capture the identifier.
Architecture
The exact event sequence
Five stages. Nothing breaks technically here. What breaks is the reporting: the entry page is not stored on the lead, so the best-performing traffic on the site cannot be identified afterwards. The identifier has to survive all of them.
Step 1
Ad click
Onto a comparison page, frequently from a competitor-brand keyword.
Step 2
Comparison page read
Scroll depth and time here genuinely predict intent, unlike on most content.
Step 3
Demo requested
The conversion most teams report.
Step 4
Demo held
Comparison-sourced prospects show up at a higher rate than content-sourced ones, which is worth knowing and is invisible if you stop at the request.
Step 5
Opportunity created
The outcome. Comparison traffic reaches it far more often than its volume suggests.
Diagnostic sequence
What's specific to Google Ads
The funnel logic above is the same wherever you advertise. These are the parts that change because it's Google Ads.
- 1
Click identifier: gclid, gbraid and wbraid
Three parameters, not one. gclid is the long-standing identifier; gbraid and wbraid arrive on iOS traffic where privacy constraints prevent the usual one. Capture code that names only gclid loses a growing share, silently, and the loss is invisible until you audit how many records carry an identifier.
- 2
Import mechanism: offline conversion import
Uploaded against the click identifier, either through the Google Ads API or as a file. The upload is the easy part; what limits it is how many of your records carry an identifier at all. Verify the current column format against Google's own template — it has changed before.
- 3
Deduplication
There's no shared event ID mechanism like Meta's. What matters instead is the counting setting on each conversion action — 'one' for lead-type conversions so a repeat submitter doesn't count three times, 'every' for ecommerce where a second purchase is a second sale. This is the single most common misconfiguration we find in Google Ads accounts.
- 4
Window and timing
Google's offline import window is 90 days from the click. Anything older can't be matched, and rows outside it fail as unmatched without much explanation. Measure your median click-to-outcome time against that before designing anything.
- 5
The Google Ads gotcha
A conversion action that stops receiving hits is flagged as inactive 30 days later — by which point a month of budget has already run against a missing signal. Check the last-received date on every action monthly; it takes two minutes and it's the cheapest monitoring available.
Source-of-truth validation
How to prove the chain works
One real journey, followed all the way, then a reconciliation. Neither on its own is enough.
- A live Google Ads ad clicked, and the identifier confirmed present on the landing URL.
- The same identifier confirmed on the demo request and the opportunity it became after a full real journey through every step.
- Opportunity created confirmed arriving at Google Ads, verified by the match rate on the upload, not the success message.
- Your crm, with the entry page recorded on the lead reconciled against Google Ads per record over a fully closed window.
- The same reconciliation repeated 30 days later.
Straight talk
When this doesn't apply to you
Worth checking before you build anything, because two of these are common and both mean the work isn't worth doing.
- If you do not run comparison content or bid on competitor terms, there is no distinct funnel here.
- If you're running Performance Max exclusively and haven't separated your conversion actions, the import will work and the reporting won't tell you much. Worth sorting the account structure first.
- If your cycle from click to opportunity created regularly exceeds the import window, the final event can't drive bidding whatever you build. Optimize toward demo request with the entry page attached instead and use the later data for budget decisions rather than for bidding.
- If almost none of your demo requests carry a click identifier today, that's the whole project. Fix capture first — the import is the easy half and no tooling rescues a record with nothing to reference.
What working looks like
Opportunity created attributed to the click
Server-sideWeeks later if necessary, because the identifier lives on the demo request and the opportunity it became rather than in a cookie.
Google Ads bidding fed the real outcome
8+ EMQVia offline conversion import, so it optimizes toward opportunities from comparison traffic rather than toward demo requests.
A reconciliation that closes
DedupedYour crm, with the entry page recorded on the lead matched per record against what Google Ads reports, over a fully closed window.
The implementation, on Google Ads
Capture gclid, gbraid and wbraid on landing
Auto-tagging appends the identifier. Confirm it's enabled in every account — it gets switched off for cleaner analytics URLs more often than you'd expect, and that single setting removes conversion attribution, Enhanced Conversions and offline import in one go.
Persist it to the demo request and the opportunity it became
Write the entry page and the identifier onto the lead record at form submission, because the session that knows both ends minutes later.
Send opportunity created from the record
Your CRM, on the held demo and again on the opportunity, with the entry page carried through as a field on the lead. Dispatched to Google Ads through Google's offline conversion import.
Deduplicate and reverse
Conversion actions deduplicate on their own counting setting rather than an event id, so the setting matters more here than the payload. Disqualified leads and no-shows reverse.

The honestanswers.
No buzzwords, no upsell. If we don’t know, we say so.
01Can I bid on competitor brand names in Google Ads?
Bidding on a competitor's name as a keyword is generally allowed. Using their trademark in the ad text can be restricted if they complain, so check Google's trademark policy before writing the ads.
02Why do my competitor campaigns show a high cost per lead?
Because they are judged on requests. Import held demos and opportunities and compare cost per opportunity; comparison traffic often wins on that measure.
03Why isn't comparison page read enough to optimize on?
Because request counts make high-intent, low-volume comparison traffic look like a poor performer next to broad campaigns that produce cheap, unqualified forms.
04How does the identifier survive to opportunity created?
It doesn't, as a cookie — the gap is too long. It has to be written onto the demo request and the opportunity it became at the point of ad click, where it lives as a field rather than as browser storage.
05What does Google Ads need to accept the conversion?
A click identifier inside the 90-day window, a conversion action name that matches one configured in the account, a conversion timestamp for when the outcome happened, and a value. Read the match rate after uploading — a file can upload perfectly and match nothing.
06How long does this take to build?
Two to four days for the implementation, plus a closed reconciliation window before we'd call it verified. Capture and persistence are the fiddly parts; the import itself is usually an afternoon.
07Can I do this myself?
Yes, and the reference pages on this site cover the mechanics. The part that's genuinely tedious rather than clever is keeping gclid, gbraid and wbraid alive through multi-step forms and an entry page that is only known during the session that created the lead, which fails silently at every stage.
