Google Things to Do conversion tracking: stop your ads taking credit for tickets the free listing sold

Your tours, rentals and lane bookings reach Google Search and Maps through a feed your ticketing partner sends to Things to do. A traveler taps Book, lands on your partner's booking page and pays, and unless that link carries Google's surface and funnel values, GA4 can't tell the sale from ordinary Google search traffic. Worse, Google Ads and Meta can claim it for an ad the guest clicked days earlier. We tag every Things to do arrival, keep free-listing and reseller sales out of your ad conversions, and send Google Ads only the bookings its ads earned.

Google Things to Do · what breaks

What goes wrong when Things to do sells your tickets

  1. 01

"Google shows people clicking Book, but I can't find those bookings"

The Book button opens the deep link in your partner's feed, which may be a checkout your ticketing company hosts rather than a page on your own site. Google can add {surface} and {funnel} to that link, but only if your partner set it up. Without them, a boat charter or e-bike rental can't separate a Things to do sale from ordinary organic search, so the free listing's value stays a guess.

  2. 02

"My Search ads get credit for tickets the free listing sold"

A family clicks your bowling-party ad on Monday, then books Thursday from the free Things to do panel on Maps. If your Google tag still holds Monday's click, Google Ads can count that sale against it, and a Meta Pixel on the confirmation page may claim it too. Smart Bidding then learns to pay more for clicks that didn't close the sale.

  3. 03

"Resellers sell my own tour right on my Business Profile"

Google's operator booking module puts your tours on your Business Profile, with the same tours sold through OTAs shown beside them. A guest who taps a reseller pays on the reseller's site. If your booking tags or ad connections can't tell that order from a direct one, it feeds your ad accounts as if your campaigns earned it.

  4. 04

"I pay for Things to do ads and can't see what they return"

Things to do ads send clicks to your list-view link when you have one, and the products may be linked to your ticketing partner's Google Ads account, not yours. If the click ID drops before checkout, you're paying per click with no booking count. Google is moving Travel campaigns into Search campaigns for Travel starting Q3 2026, which is another reason to check what each campaign bids on.

Google Things to Do · the fix

What changes — Google Things to Do

  • Three Google lines instead of one

Free Things to do bookings, Things to do ads bookings and regular Search ads bookings each get their own row, split by Search or Maps.

  • Ad accounts learn only from paid clicks that booked

Google Ads gets bookings that carry its own click ID. Free-listing and reseller sales stay in reporting, so bidding stops chasing tickets that would have sold anyway.

  • A straight answer on paying for Things to do ads

Cost per ads booking set beside what the free listing sells shows whether a tour operator or family entertainment center should keep paying for the ad slot.

Google Things to Do · architecture

What Things to do actually lets you hook into

Google's listing page isn't yours, so no tag runs on it. Everything happens on the deep link and on the booking page your partner controls.

  1. 1

A feed sent by a connectivity partner

Google strongly recommends that single operators and systems with fewer than 100 operators connect through a connectivity partner, so your ticketing or reservation system usually owns the feed and any link changes.

  2. 2

    Deep link URL templates

Google fills placeholders on click: {surface} (search or maps), {funnel} (cat or nav), {product_id}, {option_id} and {GOOGLE-ADS-CLICK-SOURCE}. We confirm which ones your partner's links include.

  3. 3

Product page or list view landing page

Paid listings and broad queries favor the list-view link, other placements use the product page. Tags there depend on what your ticketing system allows.

  4. 4

    Ads account linking

The partner portal links Things to do products to a Google Ads account, whole feed or a CSV of product IDs. We check whose account that is.

  5. 5

    Auto-tagging click ID

Google Ads adds a GCLID to ad clicks. It has to survive any redirect to checkout, or the booking can't be matched.

Google Things to Do · diagnose

Where Things to do tracking breaks, in diagnostic order

Start with the link itself. Most of what goes wrong later traces back to what the Book button actually sends.

  1. 01

Read the landing URL from a Search tap and a Maps tap

Missing surface or funnel values mean Things to do blends into organic Google.

  2. 02

Find the Things to do ads campaign and its goal

Confirm whose Google Ads account runs it and which conversion action it bids on.

  3. 03

Follow the click ID to the order

Book from an ad and check whether the GCLID reaches the ticketing record.

  4. 04

Check what fires on a reseller booking

Booking tags and any built-in ad connection shouldn't treat an OTA sale as yours.

  5. 05

Recheck after the Search campaigns for Travel move

Conversion goals and settings get confirmed again once the campaign migrates.

Source of truth

Your ticketing or reservation system's orders, each carrying the Things to do surface, funnel and click ID stored at landing, checked against Google Ads click and conversion data

  • A test tap from Search and one from Maps, each with its surface value stored on the order.
  • One ads booking with its GCLID on the order and exactly one Google Ads conversion.
  • A free-listing booking and a reseller booking, both confirmed absent from every ad upload.
  • Every ads booking in a closed window matched to its conversion.
  • The same checks repeated 30 days later and after the Travel campaign migration.

Google Things to Do · when not to buy

When you don't need this on Things to do

Plenty of operators listed on Things to do have nothing to fix yet.

  • If you don't run Google or Meta ads at all, the free listing has nothing to confuse, and your partner's sales report is enough.
  • If your partner's links already pass surface and funnel and GA4 shows Things to do as its own source, a quick settings review may be all you need.
  • If nearly every sale comes through OTAs, your fight is commission, not attribution.
  • If you don't control your booking page tags and your partner won't add Google's parameters, we'll say so on the call instead of selling a build that can't work.

Google Things to Do questions, answered

Bookings from the free listing aren't ad conversions and shouldn't be uploaded as one. Bookings from Things to do ads can be, as long as the click ID reaches your checkout and gets passed back to Google Ads.
