Conversion tracking for the Cloudbeds booking engine

Cloudbeds gives its booking engine dedicated tracking fields: a GA4 Measurement ID or a GTM container ID — one or the other, never both — plus a Google Ads ID and a Facebook Pixel ID. The purchase data includes reservation number, total, taxes and room type. Cross-domain measurement between your hotel site and the engine is left to you, and if you embed the engine with Immersive Experience 2.0, the tags have to live on your own site instead.

The problem

What goes wrong on Cloudbeds

Cloudbeds-specific issues
Leak #01

Self-referrals from your own site

Cross-domain is the property's job, and it often gets skipped.

Leak #02

Totals with taxes in them

ROAS looks better than it is when tax counts as revenue.

Leak #03

GA4 or GTM, picked by accident

Choosing GA4 rules out the container that would carry your other tags.

Leak #04

Embedded engine, missing tags

Immersive Experience 2.0 needs tags on the host site, not in Cloudbeds' fields.

Architecture

What Cloudbeds actually lets you do

Good native fields, and two decisions that are easy to get wrong.

  1. Step 1

One slot: a GA4 ID or a GTM container

One or the other, in Booking Engine Settings.

  2. Step 2

Google Ads and Facebook Pixel ID fields

    Native and browser-side.

  3. Step 3

    Purchase data with reservation detail

Reservation number, total, taxes and room type.

  4. Step 4

    Cross-domain left to you

Cloudbeds states it is the customer's responsibility.

  5. Step 5

    Embedded mode needs host-site tags

With Immersive Experience 2.0, the engine runs on your site.

Diagnostic sequence

Where Cloudbeds tracking breaks

Work through these in order; each one rules something out.

  1. 1

Check GA4 for your own domain as a source

That means cross-domain linking is missing.

  2. 2

Compare reported revenue with reservation totals

If it matches including taxes, value is inflated.

  3. 3

    Look for duplicate purchases

A Pixel ID in Cloudbeds plus a pixel in GTM sends two.

  4. 4

    Confirm which mode you run

Linked or embedded; the tags belong in different places.

  5. 5

    Count OTA reservations out

Reservations from Booking.com sitting in Cloudbeds aren't your ads' conversions.

Source-of-truth validation

The QA evidence on Cloudbeds

On your live booking engine with a real reservation you cancel afterward.

Source of truthCloudbeds reservations — direct bookings by date with reservation number, room revenue and taxes
  • A test reservation carries its source from your site through the engine.
  • One purchase per reservation at each destination, keyed on reservation number.
  • Value confirmed net of taxes.
  • Cancellation confirmed reversed in reporting.
  • Direct reservations reconciled per reservation number over a closed month.
  • Rerun a month later and after any booking engine update.

Straight talk

When you don't need this on Cloudbeds

Cloudbeds' native fields carry a lot.

  • If you run only Google Ads and cross-domain is set, the native GA4 and Google Ads fields may be enough.
  • If most of your reservations come from OTAs, direct-booking tracking covers a small slice of revenue.
  • If you embed the engine and your web developer already manages GTM, they can add the tags.
  • A small property spending little on ads can live with browser-side numbers checked monthly.

Who this is for

Honest about who we’re a fit for.

We don’t take every project. Here’s how to tell if we’re right for you.

Good fit

You’re a great fit if…

  • You run Cloudbeds (or are migrating to it)
  • You spend $5K+/month on paid ads (Meta, Google, TikTok, Microsoft, LinkedIn)
  • Your reported ROAS doesn’t match what your bank account is saying
  • You want to own your tracking stack — no monthly SaaS fees forever
  • You have 2–4 days to do this once and never think about it again
Not a fit

Skip us if…

  • You spend less than $500/month on paid ads (browser pixel is fine)
  • You want a SaaS dashboard with monthly fees forever (Triple Whale, Hyros)
  • You need attribution modeling — we fix the data foundation, not multi-touch reports
  • You want a 6-month enterprise consulting engagement (we ship in 4 days)
  • You expect us to manage your ad accounts (we don’t — that’s a different service)

If you’re still unsure, book the call anyway— we’ll tell you straight whether we can help.

Got questions?

The honestanswers.

No buzzwords, no upsell. If we don’t know, we say so.

01Should we use GA4 or GTM in Cloudbeds?

GTM, if you want anything beyond GA4, because Cloudbeds won't take both. GA4 directly is fine if that's all you run.

02Why are direct bookings credited to our own hotel site in GA4?

Cloudbeds leaves cross-domain to you. Link your site and the engine and the original source survives.

03Should revenue include taxes?

No. Cloudbeds sends taxes separately, so subtract them and ROAS reflects room revenue.

04Does the Facebook Pixel field cover Meta properly?

It covers browser-side events. Ad blockers and Safari's limits still drop some, which is where a server-side copy keyed on reservation number helps.

05What about the embedded Immersive Experience?

In embedded mode the tags must sit on your own site, and the engine's tracking fields don't apply the same way.
