ClickFunnels → Google Ads · Conversion tracking

Connecting ClickFunnels to Google Ads

ClickFunnels builds multi-step funnels with upsells and downsells by design, which produces several transactions from one customer and breaks naive conversion counting. Google Ads knows what you spent and which click it came from, and nothing at all about what happened afterwards. The join between them succeeds or fails on one thing: whether the GCLID reaches the ClickFunnels purchase before the conversion happens, because Google Ads can only match a conversion it can tie back to a click it recognizes.

The problem

Why this join usually fails

ClickFunnels → Google Ads-specific issues
Leak #01

The GCLID never reaches ClickFunnels

The single most common cause. Pages and checkout are hosted by ClickFunnels, and the funnel spans several steps on several URLs. The identifier has to be captured at entry and carried through every step to the purchase, which is more hops than most platforms require.

Leak #02

One customer, four charges

Upsells and downsells each create a transaction. Counting each as a conversion multiplies your reported performance by the length of your funnel.

Leak #03

The conversion action is the wrong type

Uploads against a standard website conversion action fail. The action has to be created as 'Import' — and existing actions cannot be converted, so this is discovered late and requires starting a new action with no history.

Leak #04

Nothing reconciles afterwards

An upload that succeeds is not an upload that matched. Google Ads reports uploads in Goals → Conversions → Uploads, with rows accepted and rows failed. A green result means the file parsed, not that the clicks matched. The number to watch is how many conversions actually appear against campaigns afterwards.

Architecture

How ClickFunnels and Google Ads actually connect

Two systems that know nothing about each other. Everything below exists to give them one shared reference.

  1. Step 1

    ClickFunnels holds the truth

One customer moving through a funnel with two upsells and a downsell can generate four separate charges. Grouping by customer rather than by charge is what makes the number mean anything.

  2. Step 2

Google Ads needs a click to match

Google Ads matches an uploaded conversion back to a click using the GCLID. The conversion action must be created as an import type — an upload against a website-tag conversion action is rejected. Uploads must also land inside Google's window: the click has to be within the last 90 days.

  3. Step 3

    The identifier is the bridge

The GCLID, captured at the visit and carried into the ClickFunnels purchase. Without it there is nothing to join on and no tool fixes that.

  4. Step 4

    The event source decides reliability

Send the front-end purchase as the acquisition event at the total realised customer value, and treat upsells and downsells as additional revenue against the same acquisition.

  5. Step 5

    Deduplication at the destination

Google deduplicates on the combination of GCLID, conversion action and conversion time. Uploading the same click twice against the same action at the same timestamp is rejected rather than double-counted, but uploading it against a second conversion action counts twice — which is how most double-counting here actually happens.

Diagnose it honestly

Working vs. broken, side by side

Both states look identical from the Google Ads dashboard, which is why this runs for months before anyone notices.

Normal — not a fault

  • The GCLID present on the purchase

Visible on the record itself in ClickFunnels, not merely captured somewhere on the site.

  • Sent from the ClickFunnels purchase webhook

Server-side, so it does not depend on the customer's browser still being there.

  • Deduplicated correctly

Google deduplicates on the combination of GCLID, conversion action and conversion time. Uploading the same click twice against the same action at the same timestamp is rejected rather than double-counted, but uploading it against a second conversion action counts twice — which is how most double-counting here actually happens.

  • Reconciles with the source

Google Ads's count and ClickFunnels's records agree within a few percent over a closed window.

Actually broken

  • The GCLID missing on most records

Pages and checkout are hosted by ClickFunnels, and the funnel spans several steps on several URLs. The identifier has to be captured at entry and carried through every step to the purchase, which is more hops than most platforms require.

  • Sent from the browser

Anyone who closes the tab, blocks the script or converts without a page load is invisible. Upsells and downsells each create a transaction. Counting each as a conversion multiplies your reported performance by the length of your funnel.

  • Counted twice, or not at all

Uploads against a standard website conversion action fail. The action has to be created as 'Import' — and existing actions cannot be converted, so this is discovered late and requires starting a new action with no history.

  • Nobody has reconciled it

The dashboard shows a number and no one has compared it to ClickFunnels. A wrong number that nobody checks is indistinguishable from a right one.

Diagnostic sequence

Diagnostic order

Each step rules out a class of cause. Run them in order and the last one usually has a single explanation standing.

  1. 1

    Count purchases carrying the GCLID

The ceiling on everything else. Do this before debugging anything downstream.

  2. 2

Follow one real conversion end to end

From the ad click through ClickFunnels and into Google Ads.

  3. 3

Count conversions against unique customers for a closed day

If conversions substantially exceed customers, the funnel steps are each being counted.

  4. 4

Check the conversion action type and the upload diagnostics

In Google Ads, Goals → Conversions → Uploads shows every upload with its error rows. Read the errors rather than the success count; a file can import successfully with most rows rejected.

  5. 5

Read the match rate, not the success message

Google Ads reports uploads in Goals → Conversions → Uploads, with rows accepted and rows failed. A green result means the file parsed, not that the clicks matched. The number to watch is how many conversions actually appear against campaigns afterwards.

Source-of-truth validation

How it gets proven

Against ClickFunnels's own records, not against either platform's dashboard.

Source of truthClickFunnels' order records for the same window, grouped by customer rather than by transaction.
  • The GCLID confirmed present on a live purchase.
  • A real conversion followed from click through ClickFunnels to Google Ads.
  • The Uploads diagnostics read row by row, with the accepted count reconciled against conversions appearing in campaign reporting.
  • A customer who took two upsells confirmed to produce one acquisition conversion at the combined value.
  • Reconciled over a fully closed window, matched per record rather than on totals.
  • Re-checked 30 days later.

Straight talk

When you don't need this

Worth reading before paying anyone, including us.

  • If Google Ads already reports conversions that reconcile against ClickFunnels's records within a few percent, this join is working and there is nothing to buy.
  • Measure identifier coverage yourself first — pull your last hundred purchases and count how many carry the GCLID. Ten minutes, free, and it tells you whether any of this is worth doing.
  • If your funnel is a single step with no upsells, this reduces to an ordinary checkout integration.
  • If your sales close inside a few days and your website tag already reports accurately, you may not need offline import at all. It exists to solve the delay between click and revenue.

Who this is for

Honest about who we’re a fit for.

We don’t take every project. Here’s how to tell if we’re right for you.

Good fit

You’re a great fit if…

  • You run ClickFunnels → Google Ads (or are migrating to it)
  • You spend $5K+/month on paid ads (Meta, Google, TikTok, Microsoft, LinkedIn)
  • Your reported ROAS doesn’t match what your bank account is saying
  • You want to own your tracking stack — no monthly SaaS fees forever
  • You have 2–4 days to do this once and never think about it again
Not a fit

Skip us if…

  • You spend less than $500/month on paid ads (browser pixel is fine)
  • You want a SaaS dashboard with monthly fees forever (Triple Whale, Hyros)
  • You need attribution modeling — we fix the data foundation, not multi-touch reports
  • You want a 6-month enterprise consulting engagement (we ship in 4 days)
  • You expect us to manage your ad accounts (we don’t — that’s a different service)

If you’re still unsure, book the call anyway— we’ll tell you straight whether we can help.

What you get

What gets built

Item 01

Identifier capture into ClickFunnels

Capture the identifier on the funnel's entry page and carry it through the funnel's own parameter passing into the purchase record, verifying it survives every step rather than just the first.

Item 02

Event source: the ClickFunnels purchase webhook

Send the front-end purchase as the acquisition event at the total realised customer value, and treat upsells and downsells as additional revenue against the same acquisition.

Item 03

Dispatch to Google Ads

Offline Conversion Import through the Google Ads API, or a scheduled upload. Enhanced conversions for leads where GCLID coverage is poor and you have consented email addresses.

Item 04

Reversals where they exist

Refunds on funnel offers are common enough that reversal is not optional if the reported number is to mean anything.

Got questions?

The honestanswers.

No buzzwords, no upsell. If we don’t know, we say so.

01Why aren't my ClickFunnels conversions showing in Google Ads?

Almost always because the GCLID never reached the ClickFunnels purchase. Pages and checkout are hosted by ClickFunnels, and the funnel spans several steps on several URLs. The identifier has to be captured at entry and carried through every step to the purchase, which is more hops than most platforms require. Measure coverage before debugging the dispatch.

02What identifier does Google Ads need?

The GCLID — the click ID Google appends to your landing page URL when auto-tagging is on. For iOS App campaigns and some Shopping traffic you will see GBRAID or WBRAID instead, and those behave differently: WBRAID cannot be used with user-provided data in the same way, and neither joins to an individual user. Enhanced conversions for leads is the alternative path, matching on hashed email or phone rather than a click ID, and it is the right choice when GCLID coverage is poor.

03Where should the event come from?

The ClickFunnels purchase webhook. Send the front-end purchase as the acquisition event at the total realised customer value, and treat upsells and downsells as additional revenue against the same acquisition.

04How do I know it worked?

Google Ads reports uploads in Goals → Conversions → Uploads, with rows accepted and rows failed. A green result means the file parsed, not that the clicks matched. The number to watch is how many conversions actually appear against campaigns afterwards.
