Braintree → Meta · Conversion tracking

Connecting Braintree to Meta Conversions API

Braintree is a payment gateway rather than a storefront, so it sits underneath whatever is taking the order and holds the transaction itself. Meta's pixel loses a large share of conversions to Safari, ad blockers and iOS, and the Conversions API exists because of it. The join between them succeeds or fails on one thing: whether the fbc and fbp values reaches the Braintree transaction before the conversion happens, because Meta can only match a conversion it can tie back to a click it recognizes.

The problem

Why this join usually fails

Braintree → Meta-specific issues
Leak #01

The fbc and fbp values never reaches Braintree

The single most common cause. Braintree is a gateway, so it sees the payment and not the marketing. The identifier has to be attached at the point your application creates the transaction, through custom fields, or it never enters Braintree at all.

Leak #02

A gateway that knows nothing about marketing

Braintree sees a payment. Whether it can be tied to a click depends entirely on whether your own application attached the identifier when creating the transaction, and most do not.

Leak #03

Double counting from broken deduplication

Server and browser both fire, the event_id does not match, and Meta counts two purchases. Reported ROAS goes up, the business does not, and it can run for months before anyone reconciles against the store.

Leak #04

Nothing reconciles afterwards

An upload that succeeds is not an upload that matched. Events Manager shows received events, the deduplication state and an Event Match Quality score per event. Events arriving is not the test — deduplicated, well-matched events arriving is. Compare Meta's reported purchases against your store's order count for the same window.

Architecture

How Braintree and Meta actually connect

Two systems that know nothing about each other. Everything below exists to give them one shared reference.

  1. Step 1

    Braintree holds the truth

Settled and authorised are different states. Authorisation reserves the funds; settlement is money moving, and reporting on the wrong one produces a persistent gap against your bank.

  2. Step 2

Meta Conversions API needs a click to match

Meta matches server events to people using whatever identifiers you send, hashed with SHA-256 where required. There is no single mandatory key, which is why quality varies so much between implementations — a poorly matched event is accepted, reported, and worth much less than it appears.

  3. Step 3

    The identifier is the bridge

The fbc and fbp values, captured at the visit and carried into the Braintree transaction. Without it there is nothing to join on and no tool fixes that.

  4. Step 4

    The event source decides reliability

Fire on settlement rather than authorisation, and note that Braintree's PayPal and wallet flows redirect the buyer away — so the confirmation page is not a reliable trigger.

  5. Step 5

    Deduplication at the destination

Meta deduplicates on the pair of event_name and event_id. The browser pixel and the server event must send the same event_id for the same conversion, within the deduplication window. Get this wrong and every purchase counts twice — which is by far the most common Conversions API failure and it inflates reported ROAS rather than reducing it.

Diagnose it honestly

Working vs. broken, side by side

Both states look identical from the Meta dashboard, which is why this runs for months before anyone notices.

Normal — not a fault

  • The fbc and fbp values present on the transaction

Visible on the record itself in Braintree, not merely captured somewhere on the site.

  • Sent from the Braintree transaction settlement webhook

Server-side, so it does not depend on the customer's browser still being there.

  • Deduplicated correctly

Meta deduplicates on the pair of event_name and event_id. The browser pixel and the server event must send the same event_id for the same conversion, within the deduplication window. Get this wrong and every purchase counts twice — which is by far the most common Conversions API failure and it inflates reported ROAS rather than reducing it.

  • Reconciles with the source

Meta's count and Braintree's records agree within a few percent over a closed window.

Actually broken

  • The fbc and fbp values missing on most records

Braintree is a gateway, so it sees the payment and not the marketing. The identifier has to be attached at the point your application creates the transaction, through custom fields, or it never enters Braintree at all.

  • Sent from the browser

Anyone who closes the tab, blocks the script or converts without a page load is invisible. Braintree sees a payment. Whether it can be tied to a click depends entirely on whether your own application attached the identifier when creating the transaction, and most do not.

  • Counted twice, or not at all

Server and browser both fire, the event_id does not match, and Meta counts two purchases. Reported ROAS goes up, the business does not, and it can run for months before anyone reconciles against the store.

  • Nobody has reconciled it

The dashboard shows a number and no one has compared it to Braintree. A wrong number that nobody checks is indistinguishable from a right one.

Diagnostic sequence

Diagnostic order

Each step rules out a class of cause. Run them in order and the last one usually has a single explanation standing.

  1. 1

Count transactions carrying the fbc and fbp values

The ceiling on everything else. Do this before debugging anything downstream.

  2. 2

Follow one real conversion end to end

From the ad click through Braintree and into Meta.

  3. 3

Open a settled transaction and check its custom fields

If the identifier is not there, your application never attached it and nothing downstream can recover it.

  4. 4

Read Event Match Quality and the deduplication indicator

In Events Manager, open the event and check both. A low match quality means weak identifiers; a missing deduplication indicator means your event_id pairing is broken.

  5. 5

Read the match rate, not the success message

Events Manager shows received events, the deduplication state and an Event Match Quality score per event. Events arriving is not the test — deduplicated, well-matched events arriving is. Compare Meta's reported purchases against your store's order count for the same window.

Source-of-truth validation

How it gets proven

Against Braintree's own records, not against either platform's dashboard.

Source of truthBraintree's transaction records, filtered to settled, for the same window.
  • The fbc and fbp values confirmed present on a live transaction.
  • A real conversion followed from click through Braintree to Meta.
  • Deduplication confirmed in Events Manager on a real purchase, with the browser and server events visibly paired rather than counted twice.
  • A PayPal-funded transaction confirmed to report even though the buyer was redirected away.
  • Reconciled over a fully closed window, matched per record rather than on totals.
  • Re-checked 30 days later.

Straight talk

When you don't need this

Worth reading before paying anyone, including us.

  • If Meta already reports conversions that reconcile against Braintree's records within a few percent, this join is working and there is nothing to buy.
  • Measure identifier coverage yourself first — pull your last hundred transactions and count how many carry the fbc and fbp values. Ten minutes, free, and it tells you whether any of this is worth doing.
  • If your platform already reports orders accurately and Braintree is purely the funding rail, work at the order layer instead — it is closer to the customer.
  • If you are not running Meta ads at meaningful spend, the Conversions API is effort without payoff. It earns its cost when the optimization signal is worth improving.

Who this is for

Honest about who we’re a fit for.

We don’t take every project. Here’s how to tell if we’re right for you.

Good fit

You’re a great fit if…

  • You run Braintree → Meta (or are migrating to it)
  • You spend $5K+/month on paid ads (Meta, Google, TikTok, Microsoft, LinkedIn)
  • Your reported ROAS doesn’t match what your bank account is saying
  • You want to own your tracking stack — no monthly SaaS fees forever
  • You have 2–4 days to do this once and never think about it again
Not a fit

Skip us if…

  • You spend less than $500/month on paid ads (browser pixel is fine)
  • You want a SaaS dashboard with monthly fees forever (Triple Whale, Hyros)
  • You need attribution modeling — we fix the data foundation, not multi-touch reports
  • You want a 6-month enterprise consulting engagement (we ship in 4 days)
  • You expect us to manage your ad accounts (we don’t — that’s a different service)

If you’re still unsure, book the call anyway— we’ll tell you straight whether we can help.

What you get

What gets built

Item 01

Identifier capture into Braintree

Pass the click identifier into the transaction's custom fields when your server creates the charge. Braintree preserves them and they survive to the webhook and to any later refund.

Item 02

Event source: the Braintree transaction settlement webhook

Fire on settlement rather than authorisation, and note that Braintree's PayPal and wallet flows redirect the buyer away — so the confirmation page is not a reliable trigger.

Item 03

Dispatch to Meta

Server-side events to the Conversions API with the event_id matched to the pixel, action_source set correctly, and customer data hashed before it leaves your infrastructure.

Item 04

Reversals where they exist

Braintree exposes refunds and disputes, both carrying the original custom fields, so reversals are straightforward.

Pricing

Got questions?

The honestanswers.

No buzzwords, no upsell. If we don’t know, we say so.

01Why aren't my Braintree conversions showing in Meta?

Almost always because the fbc and fbp values never reached the Braintree transaction. Braintree is a gateway, so it sees the payment and not the marketing. The identifier has to be attached at the point your application creates the transaction, through custom fields, or it never enters Braintree at all. Measure coverage before debugging the dispatch.

02What identifier does Meta need?

Two things. The _fbc cookie, derived from the fbclid parameter on the landing URL in the format fb.1.<timestamp>.<fbclid>, is the click identifier. The _fbp cookie is the browser identifier. Beyond those, Meta matches on hashed customer information — email, phone, name, city, country — and every additional field raises the Event Match Quality score. Unlike Google, Meta does not need a click ID at all if the customer data is good, but match quality drops noticeably without it.

03Where should the event come from?

The Braintree transaction settlement webhook. Fire on settlement rather than authorisation, and note that Braintree's PayPal and wallet flows redirect the buyer away — so the confirmation page is not a reliable trigger.

04How do I know it worked?

Events Manager shows received events, the deduplication state and an Event Match Quality score per event. Events arriving is not the test — deduplicated, well-matched events arriving is. Compare Meta's reported purchases against your store's order count for the same window.
