Shopify → Meta · Conversion tracking
Connecting Shopify to Meta Conversions API
Shopify is the system of record for the order, and its admin numbers are the ones the business runs on. Meta's pixel loses a large share of conversions to Safari, ad blockers and iOS, and the Conversions API exists because of it. The join between them succeeds or fails on one thing: whether the fbc and fbp values reaches the Shopify order before the conversion happens, because Meta can only match a conversion it can tie back to a click it recognizes.

Why this join usually fails
The fbc and fbp values never reaches Shopify
The single most common cause. Shopify's checkout is locked down. Custom scripts on the checkout steps are not permitted on standard plans, and the old additional-scripts route is gone, so the identifier has to be captured on the storefront and carried into the order through cart or order attributes rather than read at the checkout itself.
Checkout extensibility hides what you need
Shopify deliberately restricts what runs during checkout. Setups that assumed free rein there broke when the platform moved to Checkout Extensibility, and many stores have been quietly under-reporting since.
Double counting from broken deduplication
Server and browser both fire, the event_id does not match, and Meta counts two purchases. Reported ROAS goes up, the business does not, and it can run for months before anyone reconciles against the store.
Nothing reconciles afterwards
An upload that succeeds is not an upload that matched. Events Manager shows received events, the deduplication state and an Event Match Quality score per event. Events arriving is not the test — deduplicated, well-matched events arriving is. Compare Meta's reported purchases against your store's order count for the same window.
Architecture
How Shopify and Meta actually connect
Two systems that know nothing about each other. Everything below exists to give them one shared reference.
Step 1
Shopify holds the truth
The order carries line items, discounts, shipping, tax, currency and the customer. Note which figure you intend to report — total, subtotal, or net of shipping and tax — because most mismatches between Shopify and an ad platform turn out to be two people comparing two different numbers.
Step 2
Meta Conversions API needs a click to match
Meta matches server events to people using whatever identifiers you send, hashed with SHA-256 where required. There is no single mandatory key, which is why quality varies so much between implementations — a poorly matched event is accepted, reported, and worth much less than it appears.
Step 3
The identifier is the bridge
The fbc and fbp values, captured at the visit and carried into the Shopify order. Without it there is nothing to join on and no tool fixes that.
Step 4
The event source decides reliability
Send when Shopify says the order is paid, from your server. This also covers draft orders, POS, and the customer who closes the tab on the thank-you page — none of which a pixel on the order-status page will ever see.
Step 5
Deduplication at the destination
Meta deduplicates on the pair of event_name and event_id. The browser pixel and the server event must send the same event_id for the same conversion, within the deduplication window. Get this wrong and every purchase counts twice — which is by far the most common Conversions API failure and it inflates reported ROAS rather than reducing it.
Diagnose it honestly
Working vs. broken, side by side
Both states look identical from the Meta dashboard, which is why this runs for months before anyone notices.
Normal — not a fault
The fbc and fbp values present on the order
Visible on the record itself in Shopify, not merely captured somewhere on the site.
Sent from the orders/paid webhook
Server-side, so it does not depend on the customer's browser still being there.
Deduplicated correctly
Meta deduplicates on the pair of event_name and event_id. The browser pixel and the server event must send the same event_id for the same conversion, within the deduplication window. Get this wrong and every purchase counts twice — which is by far the most common Conversions API failure and it inflates reported ROAS rather than reducing it.
Reconciles with the source
Meta's count and Shopify's records agree within a few percent over a closed window.
Actually broken
The fbc and fbp values missing on most records
Shopify's checkout is locked down. Custom scripts on the checkout steps are not permitted on standard plans, and the old additional-scripts route is gone, so the identifier has to be captured on the storefront and carried into the order through cart or order attributes rather than read at the checkout itself.
Sent from the browser
Anyone who closes the tab, blocks the script or converts without a page load is invisible. Shopify deliberately restricts what runs during checkout. Setups that assumed free rein there broke when the platform moved to Checkout Extensibility, and many stores have been quietly under-reporting since.
Counted twice, or not at all
Server and browser both fire, the event_id does not match, and Meta counts two purchases. Reported ROAS goes up, the business does not, and it can run for months before anyone reconciles against the store.
Nobody has reconciled it
The dashboard shows a number and no one has compared it to Shopify. A wrong number that nobody checks is indistinguishable from a right one.
Diagnostic sequence
Diagnostic order
Each step rules out a class of cause. Run them in order and the last one usually has a single explanation standing.
- 1
Count orders carrying the fbc and fbp values
The ceiling on everything else. Do this before debugging anything downstream.
- 2
Follow one real conversion end to end
From the ad click through Shopify and into Meta.
- 3
Open a recent paid order and read its note attributes
If the identifier is not on the order, nothing downstream can attribute it. Check ten orders, not one — partial coverage is the normal failure, not total absence.
- 4
Read Event Match Quality and the deduplication indicator
In Events Manager, open the event and check both. A low match quality means weak identifiers; a missing deduplication indicator means your event_id pairing is broken.
- 5
Read the match rate, not the success message
Events Manager shows received events, the deduplication state and an Event Match Quality score per event. Events arriving is not the test — deduplicated, well-matched events arriving is. Compare Meta's reported purchases against your store's order count for the same window.
Source-of-truth validation
How it gets proven
Against Shopify's own records, not against either platform's dashboard.
- The fbc and fbp values confirmed present on a live order.
- A real conversion followed from click through Shopify to Meta.
- Deduplication confirmed in Events Manager on a real purchase, with the browser and server events visibly paired rather than counted twice.
- Order totals in Shopify Admin reconciled per order, not on the summed total, over a closed window.
- Reconciled over a fully closed window, matched per record rather than on totals.
- Re-checked 30 days later.
Straight talk
When you don't need this
Worth reading before paying anyone, including us.
- If Meta already reports conversions that reconcile against Shopify's records within a few percent, this join is working and there is nothing to buy.
- Measure identifier coverage yourself first — pull your last hundred orders and count how many carry the fbc and fbp values. Ten minutes, free, and it tells you whether any of this is worth doing.
- Shopify's own native channel integrations already cover simple single-currency stores adequately. If your admin numbers and platform numbers already agree, you do not need this.
- If you are not running Meta ads at meaningful spend, the Conversions API is effort without payoff. It earns its cost when the optimization signal is worth improving.
Who this is for
Honest about who we’re a fit for.
We don’t take every project. Here’s how to tell if we’re right for you.
You’re a great fit if…
- You run Shopify → Meta (or are migrating to it)
- You spend $5K+/month on paid ads (Meta, Google, TikTok, Microsoft, LinkedIn)
- Your reported ROAS doesn’t match what your bank account is saying
- You want to own your tracking stack — no monthly SaaS fees forever
- You have 2–4 days to do this once and never think about it again
Skip us if…
- You spend less than $500/month on paid ads (browser pixel is fine)
- You want a SaaS dashboard with monthly fees forever (Triple Whale, Hyros)
- You need attribution modeling — we fix the data foundation, not multi-touch reports
- You want a 6-month enterprise consulting engagement (we ship in 4 days)
- You expect us to manage your ad accounts (we don’t — that’s a different service)
If you’re still unsure, book the call anyway— we’ll tell you straight whether we can help.
What working looks like
The fbc and fbp values on every order
Server-sideCaptured before the conversion and stored where it survives.
Conversions arriving in Meta
8+ EMQEvents appear in Events Manager with an Event Match Quality score, deduplicated against the pixel, and become usable for optimization and attribution.
Reconciled against the source
DedupedShopify's own records are the reference, not either dashboard.
What gets built
Identifier capture into Shopify
Capture the click identifier on the storefront, write it to a cart attribute so it becomes an order note attribute, and read it back server-side from the order. That path survives the checkout domain hop that breaks cookie-based approaches.
Event source: the orders/paid webhook
Send when Shopify says the order is paid, from your server. This also covers draft orders, POS, and the customer who closes the tab on the thank-you page — none of which a pixel on the order-status page will ever see.
Dispatch to Meta
Server-side events to the Conversions API with the event_id matched to the pixel, action_source set correctly, and customer data hashed before it leaves your infrastructure.
Reversals where they exist
refunds/create fires with the original order reference, so refunds and cancellations can be reversed at the destination.
Pick the package that fits your ad spend
Fixed-fee, no surprises. If your ad spend is meaningful,server-side tracking is what we recommend— it’s the only setup that survives iOS, Safari ITP and ad blockers.
Browser-side starter
Wires the join and verifies it on a live conversion. Honest about its ceiling where the source can only be read from the browser.
- The join built and tested end to end
- Verified on a real conversion
- Reconciled against the source's own records
- Written handover
1st-party server-side
Save $18K–$120K over 5 years vs Triple Whale / Hyros
The join built server-side from the source's own records, so it does not depend on a browser being present when the conversion happens.
- Events sourced from the system of record, not the browser
- Identifier captured and persisted end to end
- Deduplicated at the destination
- Reversals wired where the source supports them
- 95%+ accuracy guaranteed in writing

Got questions?
The honestanswers.
No buzzwords, no upsell. If we don’t know, we say so.
01Why aren't my Shopify conversions showing in Meta?
Almost always because the fbc and fbp values never reached the Shopify order. Shopify's checkout is locked down. Custom scripts on the checkout steps are not permitted on standard plans, and the old additional-scripts route is gone, so the identifier has to be captured on the storefront and carried into the order through cart or order attributes rather than read at the checkout itself. Measure coverage before debugging the dispatch.
02What identifier does Meta need?
Two things. The _fbc cookie, derived from the fbclid parameter on the landing URL in the format fb.1.<timestamp>.<fbclid>, is the click identifier. The _fbp cookie is the browser identifier. Beyond those, Meta matches on hashed customer information — email, phone, name, city, country — and every additional field raises the Event Match Quality score. Unlike Google, Meta does not need a click ID at all if the customer data is good, but match quality drops noticeably without it.
03Where should the event come from?
The orders/paid webhook. Send when Shopify says the order is paid, from your server. This also covers draft orders, POS, and the customer who closes the tab on the thank-you page — none of which a pixel on the order-status page will ever see.
04How do I know it worked?
Events Manager shows received events, the deduplication state and an Event Match Quality score per event. Events arriving is not the test — deduplicated, well-matched events arriving is. Compare Meta's reported purchases against your store's order count for the same window.
