Get your Big Cartel tracking to 95%+ accuracy guaranteed in writing.
Big Cartel is built for artists and indie sellers — light, simple, fast. The trade-off: tracking is bare-bones. No CAPI. No advanced matching. iOS purchases vanish. If you're spending even $1K/month on Meta or Google, you need a real server-side gateway. We ship one in 4 days.

Big Cartel · architecture
How a Big Cartel order should reach the ad platforms
Big Cartel is deliberately simple, which sets a real ceiling on what tracking can do. Being honest about that ceiling is more useful than pretending otherwise.
- 1
Click identifiers captured at first touch
Click IDs are captured in the theme at landing and written to a first-party cookie, because Big Cartel's checkout does not preserve URL parameters.
- 2
The browser sends the fast, fragile copy
Theme code fires browsing and cart events. Big Cartel's checkout is hosted and offers limited script access, so the browser path effectively ends at the cart.
- 3
The order itself is the source of truth
The Big Cartel order record is the truth. The confirmation page is the only browser-side hook and it is not guaranteed to be reached.
- 4
A server container sends the authoritative event
Where Big Cartel's plan and API access allow it, the order is posted to a GTM server container on your own subdomain, keyed on the order number. Where they do not, we say so rather than building something that will not hold.
- 5
Customer identity raises match quality
The order carries buyer email and shipping address, which is what identity signal is available on this platform.
Big Cartel · events
The event set we build on Big Cartel, and where each one comes from
The event set here is short on purpose. Big Cartel does not expose enough to justify a longer one.
| Event | Fires when, on Big Cartel | Key parameters | Sent from |
|---|---|---|---|
| view_item | A product page renders | item_id, value, currency, event_id | Browser + server, deduped |
| add_to_cart | The cart update completes | item_id, quantity, value, currency, event_id | Browser + server, deduped |
| purchase | The order is confirmed | order_id, value, currency, items[], hashed email/phone/name/address, event_id | Server authoritative |
Big Cartel · normal or broken
What Big Cartel can and cannot do
This is a platform where the honest answer is often that the ceiling is low, and the right advice may be to spend elsewhere.
Normal, not a fault
Fewer events available than on a full ecommerce platform
Big Cartel does not expose a granular checkout funnel. This is a product decision, not something a build can work around.
Limited checkout script access
Expected on the hosted checkout.
Ad platforms report more conversions than you have orders
Meta credits a 7-day click and 1-day view; Google credits on click date. Two platforms can each claim the same sale. Compare each one to your order records separately and never add them together.
Recent days always look worse than they finish
Conversions are credited back to the date of the click, so yesterday's return on ad spend is understated and will keep improving for several days. This is attribution working, not data arriving late.
Actually broken
Purchase tracked only from the confirmation page
Orders where the buyer closes the tab are never counted.
No order number on the conversion
Reconciliation becomes impossible and duplicates undetectable.
Theme update wiping the tracking code
Big Cartel theme changes replace the template. The code goes with it.
Big Cartel · prove
How we prove the Big Cartel build is correct
The tag firing proves the tag fires. These prove the numbers are right.
Source of truth
Big Cartel order records
- The order number present on every conversion so reconciliation is possible at all.
- Tracking confirmed to survive a theme change, or the risk documented if it cannot.
- The platform's genuine limits stated in writing rather than papered over.
- Purchase count within a few percent of big cartel order records for a fully closed week, matched on order ID rather than on totals.
- No order ID appearing twice in any platform's event log.
- Deduplication confirmed at every destination that supports it.
- Test and staff orders excluded, with the exclusion confirmed active rather than merely configured.
- The same reconciliation repeated 30 days later, because a setup that works once and then drifts is the harder failure to catch.

Big Cartel · when not to buy
When a Big Cartel rebuild is not what you need
We would rather say this now than three weeks into an engagement.
- You sell a handful of items and spend little on ads. The ceiling here is low and the honest advice is to keep it simple.
- You are outgrowing Big Cartel. Move first, then build tracking properly on the new platform.
- Your spend would be better used on the platform migration than on tracking within this one.
